M-1's Breakthrough and Strikeforce's Cyborg vs. Carano Events May Benefit From Affliction Cancellation

M-1-global_medium MMAWeekly is reporting that M-1 Global's August 28th event in Los Angeles and Strikeforce's August 15th event card may benefit from the sudden cancellation of Affliction's Trilogy event set for August 1st:

One event that is perhaps more likely than others to gain from the cancellation is M-1 Global’s Aug. 28 event in Los Angeles. Several sources indicated that event is a primary focus for placing undercard bouts. Although the talks are still preliminary, M-1 Global’s event would make sense given that the company is a main partner of Affliction and was co-promoting the Aug. 1 "Trilogy" event.

Affliction has also worked closely with Strikeforce, sharing fighters with the California-based promotion in the past. Strikeforce has an Aug. 15 event on Showtime featuring a women’s title bout between Gina Carano and Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos. That event has also suffered recent setbacks with the withdrawal of heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem in a title bout against Fabricio Werdum and, Friday morning, Joe Riggs dropped out of a scheduled welterweight championship fight against Nick Diaz.

Given the strong relationship between the two promotions, it wouldn’t be out of the question for Affliction to try and place some of its fighters on the Strikeforce card to try and fill in some of the gaps.

In an interesting twist of events, Strikeforce and M-1 could benefit greatly from the cancellation. Fabricio Werdum is currently looking for a heavyweight match-up, and Nick Diaz is also needing an opponent for the Strikeforce card on the 15th. M-1's card could use some star power as only Don Frye vs. "King Mo" Lawal is scheduled as one of the biggest fights on the card.

This is definitely an exciting prospect considering the massive disappointment that the cancellation has given fans. Renato "Babalu" Sobral vs. Gegard Mousasi, Vitor Belfort vs. Jorge Santiago, and even Takanori Gomi vs. Rafael Oliveira were battles that many fans were looking forward to watching next weekend. Paul Daley vs. Jay Hieron was also a fight that some fans wanted to see, although our own Luke Thomas has hinted that visa issues may have already caused that match-up to have been cancelled.

Hopefully, Affliction can make some of these match-ups happen on the forementioned cards. That'll save us from waiting for these match-ups to happen down the road, and give some of Affliction's partners some much needed luster for their events. The most interesting announcements will be for Nick Diaz and Fabricio Werdum.

UPDATE: Kevin Iole suggests a Strikeforce-Affliction merger is happening:

Affliction itself is fighting simply for survival. Several sources have said that Affliction and Strikeforce will have some type of merger with Strikeforce retaining its name. Affliction’s Tom Atencio denied any merger is imminent, and Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker is in Italy on vacation and couldn’t be reached for comment

However, two independent sources told Yahoo! Sports a deal is either completed or on the verge of completion.

This would definitely give Strikeforce the ability to make these fights happen on their card. I'm wondering if they'd lend some of these fights to M-1's Breakthrough event though.

Exactly what I was saying ...

Aug 28th show in Los Angeles (m-1) and Aug 15th Strikeforce show will heavily benefit from all this.

Maybe in different ways as well.

Hieron or Daley (if the paperwork can be finished in time) vs. Diaz

Rothwell or Buentello, or Yvel I guess, vs. Werdum

The HW match will be weaker than the original, but the WW match would be stronger.

Rothwell vs. Werdum

and Buentello vs. Yvel again!

It ends in an armbar or a strangle regardless.

Jay Hieron vs Nick Diaz

would be teh hotness. Big test for Nick who’s always lost decisions to better positional grapplers (Sherk, Karo, Diego).

Was Hieron the last IFL Welterweight Champion?

by madiq on Jul 24, 2009 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Sherk and Karo were poor decisions. Sherk couldn’t even take Nick down so it’s a poor comparisons as well

Sherk and Riggs maybe I'd grant

But IMO Karo won that fight.

Riggs isn’t much older

It ends in an armbar or a strangle regardless.

Yeah, I recall that being a clear Karo win as well.

How great would it be

If Strikeforce somehow got Fedor to fight(read: destroy) Werdum then take on either Rogers or Overeem?

by bla10cow on Jul 24, 2009 4:15 PM EDT reply actions

that would be hot

I’d actually prefer if Fedor beat Werdum then moved over to Sengoku for New Year’s Eve to destroy Barnett and then went to the UFC.

I’d actually prefer it if Fedor stayed in Strikeforce for a year or so before heading to the UFC myself.

It’s all about building anticipation.

Another possible benefit:

Balalu vs. Mousasi as a Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Title fight.

Call it a hunch, but I see Mousasi staying primarily in Japan in the near future. Hopefully I’m wrong, cause that’s one of the better potential LHW matches outside UFC.

Nick Diaz vs Paul Daley!!!!!

Paul already asked for that fight on his facebook!

Make it happen!

Well, I’d rather see Diaz-Hieron first, with Daley calling out the winner.

If Fedor were to end up in Strikeforce we could see him get acquainted with fighting in a cage. Some have speculated that he may not cross over well. Bummer about the no elbows on the ground in SF though, Fedor plus elbows on the ground is something I have wanted to see for a while.

If I’m Scott Coker, I wait for Affliction to close up shop and buy all their top tier guys at a lowball price.

Time is definitely on Strikeforce’s side.

But this deal might include Affliction kicking in a little bit of cash to make the contracts go down smoother.

by madiq on Jul 24, 2009 5:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I imagine it has to, Cokers not paying 300 grand for Matt Lindland you know.

by Michael Rome on Jul 24, 2009 5:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Matt Lindland's mom isn't paying 300 grand for Matt Lindland

Especially after his last bout.

It ends in an armbar or a strangle regardless.

What would prevent Barnett vs Fedor in the next Dream?

Steroids be damned, it’s still the fight I want to see.

by Headkick on Jul 24, 2009 5:43 PM EDT reply actions

I think Barnett still has beef with the former DSE people from PRIDE.

by madiq on Jul 24, 2009 5:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah this would have to be a Sengoku thing, and they aren’t as loosey goosey with money as FEG is.

It ends in an armbar or a strangle regardless.
