Cheick Kongo vs. Frank Mir at UFC 107?
Promoted from the FanPosts by Kid Nate.
According to sportsnet.ca the fight could happen at the December 13 card:
Cheick Kongo, one of Bisping's Wolfslair teammates, is also angling to have a fight at the end of this year.
A source close to Kongo informed Sportsnet that the French striker is tentatively scheduled to face Frank Mir at UFC 107 in Memphis, TN....
Mir's camp has stated they have yet to hear of this fight request, but have stated they are definitely interested in fighting Kongo.
UFC 107 is penciled in for December 13 and will most likely be headlined by Cheick Kongo's teammate, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson as he finally faces off against opposing TUF 10 coach, Rashad Evans.
The fight is far from being finalized, but if it was to push through, it would be an interesting match between two heavyweight contenders.
Frank Mir has shown improved stand-up skills, but will it be enough to defeat a dangerous striker like Kongo? Cheick Kongo, despite being manhandled by a very good wrestler in Cain, has also shown improved takedown defense. If it gets to the ground I think Mir has a huge advantage, but can he get it there?

Easy fight for Mir – I transition more in my sleep than Kongo a fight. Mir is a submission specialist, and so long as he gets it to the ground and avoids getting drilled, he should get the tapout.

I agree, but
Mir isn’t exactly the best wrestler out there.. If Kongo can keep it standing, he has a decent chance of winning.

I have a feeling my Grandmother could take Kongo down if she tried

well, considering kongo's mindboggling performance against herring ...
… frank might get a little help getting it to the ground
My bet is on kongo. Mir let me down last time, kongo didn’t (well he was just being himself minus a gas tank). He doesn’t even need to work on his ground game, there is no way he catches up with mir in 3 months anyway. Don’t make stupid mistake (don’t go for a fu**ing takedown), defend takedowns (in my memories Mir always happens to end up being on the ground somehow, but I fail to remember any of his takedowns) and knock him out.
That’s the only french fellow I can cheer for anyway so please bear my bias.

Last go-round, some of GSP’s striking coaches were French nationals. There seem to be a lot of French kick boxers, as there are American wrestlers or Brazilian grapplers. Is there a tradition there? (I don’t know a damn thing about France, except for what happened during the Napoleonic and 20th century “great” wars.)

I'm pretty sure
that Shogun’s method of attack would’ve been slightly different if he weren’t allowed to stomp.
Fact of the matter is, Shogun took him down at will, and likely would’ve beat him up on the ground regardless.

That’s a fight that kind of makes sense. Kongo is a guy who was at the door of a title shot; Mir just lost the intrim belt. Whoever wins here is right back in line. I hope they can make this one happen, and I hope Kongo can develop some submission defense.
More like Mir was forced to throw away that FAKE belt.
And for that I am thankful.
There is only one UFC HW Champion and that is Brock Lesnar.
I like the matchup
The winner will probably be one fight away from a title fight, and either one of them will have to go through Velasquez or Carwin or CC or Dos Santos to get there. Bueno!

I think this is a very solid fight, I think Kongo with a full camp could actually work on takedown defense. Will that make him a division I wrestler after 3 months? Of course not, but Frank Mir is not the greatest wrestler in the world, but he can pull off submissions from anywhere. I really like this fight, and if it does get signed and no injuries happen, this UFC 107 card is looking sharp.
Who else is scheduled besides Rampage/Rashad?

It will be Hardonk vs. Mir II
Easy payday for Mir.
I’m a sucker for fights that puts guys with similar strengths together. I’d rather see Mir fight Gonzaga and Kongo fight Barry. I seem to be in a minority though, people enjoy the striker vs grappler matchups…
Why? So Barry can come out and try to prove he can punch instead of using his strength in kicks? Ugh… he crushed my parlay.

didn’t use kicks when? Against Hague? The fight went like 45 seconds on the feet and he threw 3 head kicks. 1 head kick for every 15 seconds sounds like a lot to me. Obviously the leg kicks he threw against Evenson were brutal and a much smarter fight. It seems like he was guilty of headhunting because he didn’t respect Hague and he was trying too hard for a highlight reel knockout (and bonus money) against a rather weak opponent.
Maybe its going to be a trend for the guy though. He’s not going to win many fight bonuses busting up people’s knees with low kicks.
To be fair
It’s possible that Hague does not suck.

I think Mir takes this easily, so don’t argue with me, lol.
Forget this fight, let’s see my man Gabe Gonzaga vs Chuck Kongo. It would be a battle of guys who get back in line, fight for a probable title shot and then lose. Rinse, repeat. Maybe then, one of them can win the big fight to get the shot!
This made me think, that I would like to see the UFC do more cards that have a theme, like camp vs camp, country vs country, etc… Doesn’t have to be every card, but this could set up some fun rivalries like the old Chute Box days in Pride.
If you're not submitting, you're just rolling around with another guy.

I disagree. I would rather see deserving fighters get the fights they deserve. Deservedly so.
I couldn’t get into the IFL for that reason, honestly. While the fights were mostly good and fun to watch, I just can’t bring myself to care about ‘teams’ or such. But that’s just me.

I'm with you
Teams mean nothing to me inside the octagon,
Great for getting fighters ready, but come fight time, you have a wolf pack of 1. (The Hangover, anyone?)

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying each fight on the card is ATT vs Jacksons or Brazil vs USA, simply that they have like 3 fights or so with that theme, and that is how they promote it. And not fights based around those camps, but rather set up a big fight like Rashad vs Rampage, then add a couple fights with their teammates that make sense.
If you're not submitting, you're just rolling around with another guy.
And remember, I’m only saying do this on occasion, nit every time out.
If you're not submitting, you're just rolling around with another guy.
From what little I know of MMA training methods, it seems that fighters are usually only as good as their camps and training partners. Some camps collect high-end fighters as a standing group (Wolf’s Lair, ATT etc), while others like GSP and Lesnar fly in experts.
So teams don’t fight in the cage, but they largely govern what skills and skill levels are present at the fight.
Other than Chuck, I can’t think of any one-hit wonder camps – they are usually either collections of greats, or not. Are their other top-tier guys working out of mid-tier or worse camps?

Yeah he asked for a not top tier camp with a top tier guy, his camp is good but not top tier and brock just becames god tier so thought it worked. Now I’d like an example of top tier fighters in bad camps. Do we have any?
You don't look like a Tanaka.
Brian Bowles?
I’m not saying the Hardcore Gym is a bad camp, by ANY means, but Bowles is one of the best bantamweights in the world, and the only other familiar names at that gym are Rory Singer and Cale Yarbrough.
"He hit like a bitch."
Forrest Griffin came from Hardcore Gym originally, don’t forget. But I do think it’s not a top tier camp per say, but more along the lines of a mid-level place.

I like the idea but it seems that it would make it even more difficult to get fighters from the same camp to fight each other. It would be great for team unity though.

weather the shots Cain took then he can win. I have a feeling we’ll find out how his chin is. The few shots Kongo landed were bombs.

Bah! This is most easily a Win for Mir just because I don’t see it NOT going to the ground in any of the 3 rounds. It’s bound to happen with Franks BJJ background
Big Cheick fan, but he really dissapointed and really shocked me at this last fight.
I would MUCH rather see a Congo vs. Cro Cop fight. Two awesome strickers going toe to toe, that or Gonzaga vs. Congo.
What shocked you about Cheick’s last performance? He is an awful wrestler, and Cain is an outstanding wrestler. Expected a quick KO?
"He hit like a bitch."
Yeah I did. Shocked is the wrong word. I expected his camp to litterly stamp “STAY STANDING” behind his eyelids going into that fight. Work on his clinch and take down defense..what we’re they doing?
Big Fan?
Well to be a big fan at least spell his name right and also know that he took the fight on short notice with an injury preventing him from training much.

why are you so sure of that, Mir doesn’t have the strongest wrestling in the world so the only way i can see the fight going to the ground is if he pulled guard….like a pussy. i dont buy that his standup is as improved as everyone says it is, yea he tore apart Nog, but nog was sick going into the fight and everyone knows he looked like shit in it.

I'm sure if Mir thought the best way to win the fight was to pull guard 8 seconds into it
that’s exactly what he’d do.
I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.
Would people stop under-estimating the standup game of Mir? He has a really good striking coach with Kenny Hahn. I think Mir will probably get Kongo to the ground via knockdownthen submit him.
im not underestimating it but it’s no where near as good as kongos, if its a standup fight Kongos gonna take it

Good fight, as long as Mir stays on the outside and picks his shots he should be able to take Kongo down and submit him in the first round. But Kong does have a puncher’s chance and if Mir gets sloppy he can get caught and put down either way this fight should do alot for the winner but wouldn’t put the loser in danger considering their last 2 quality opponents.
this would be a very interesting fight on the feet kongo has the power to take mir out n mirs new striking skills could even it up.it would be horrible for kongo if it got to the ground tho.i suspect that this fight was given to mir on the basis that if it hit the ground it would be easy money for mir to get right back into title contention.but i would love to see kongo pull it off.
IMO
Mir does fine standing, gets Kongo down inevitably, and rips off a limb/ cuts off the bloodstream to Cheick’s dome to posiition himself for a rubber match with Brock/ #1 Contender match.

I think this is an interesting fight where both guy’s strengths are pitted against the other guys weaknesses.
Kongo’s hilarious penchant for taking fights to the ground when he shouldn’t plays right into Mir’s submission happy ground game. And Mir’s complete disdain for defending himself on the ground plays right into Kongo’s nasty ground and pound game. This fight is going to end early, but I am not sure who is going to end it. Mir will either snag a quick submission or Kongo will fend him off long enough to pound him into a bloody pulp.
