"I’m the guy to beat Fedor," Monson tells Fiveouncesofpain.com:

"Fedor is a great fighter. I’d definitely love to see me fight Fedor. It’s a perfect match-up. He’s the guy I’m destined to fight. I want to be the guy to beat him. I’d definitely love to be carried off afterward…. after I submit him. My goal is to be the best in the world, even if it’s for one fight."

"This is the fight he has always wanted." said Monson’s agent, Jessy Evans. ... "Now it up to Tom and the Affliction guys to make their minds up to see if they want to make history."

-- Jeff Monson is on a 7 fight win streak over heavyweights such as Roy Nelson and Sergei Kharitnov.

Monson’s appalling stand-up gets him wrecked in round 1.

I will say this… the match-up intrigues me.

Monson couldn’t take Nelson down, I don’t see him taking Fedor down. The fight would happen where Fedor wants.

I’d much rather see #12 HW Jeff Monson vs. Fedor than #9 MW Vitor Belfort, at least it could possibly shakeup the HW division.

dave metzler – http://www.f4wonline.com/content/view/10031/

As of 8 p.m. Eastern time, here is how things stand. Affliction has made no decision regarding who will face Fedor Emelianenko. Mike Aframowitz of Strikeforce has been quoted as saying they will not approve of either Brett Rogers or Fabricio Werdum, although Affliction has not shut the door on trying to get approval for Rogers and Rogers people haven’t been told Strikeforce won’t clear him for the fight. Both Strikeforce and Showtime would have to clear either Werdum, who is scheduled on Strikeforce’s 8/15 show, or Rogers. Rogers and Vitor Belfort are known to be both still in play. Tank Abbott wants to be in play although I wonder if Affliction would want to go in that direction. He’ll mean more for ticket sales in Orange County and PPV than any alternative. The flip side is he’s Tank Abbott in his 40s. One would think a decision is going to be made shortly.

Tank would be a terrible choice.

by CSKit on Jul 23, 2009 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

But just imagine if he connects with one big shot and wins… it would be utter pandemonium.

by Nick Thomas on Jul 23, 2009 12:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

On that note… I’m hoping it’s Monson. =)

by Nick Thomas on Jul 23, 2009 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Tank isn’t connecting with anything but a bar stool after he gets pulverized by an overhand right much like Gary Goodridge got pulverized.

If Atencio actually does that fight, Affliction deserves to die.

From what I read, he’s ready to go and is excited at the prospect of the fight. Affliction’s the roadblock.

Damn

Look at that picture. I dont think Affliction wants to have two positive steroids tests for the same fight

by ryanwk628 on Jul 23, 2009 12:49 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

“It’s hard to get to get to this level without having used something. When people ask me on the street or in the gym and they’re polite about it, I’ll tell ‘em, and I’ve used things before. And it’s been quite a while. Like I said, I’ve been tested for the last couple years in the UFC and I’ve been clean and will continue to be so. You just can’t do it anymore. You just can’t risk your career by taking something like that.”

“You can have a great career and they find out you used, and then you have a black mark on you forever,” continued Monson. “It’s just not worth it. You can’t do those things. You’re playing kinda ‘chemistry set’ with your career and I don’t think there’s enough knowledge out there to be able to do that, unless you’re like a doctor.”

Monson was also asked for his thoughts as to how steroids and performance enhancing substances should be regulated by athletic commissions and other legislative bodies in the sport of mixed martial arts. Monson, a self-described anarchist, was particularly in favor of deregulation.

“If it were up to me everything would be legal,” said the Washington native. “I don’t think they should make anything illegal because you have fighters coming up or body builders or college players, whatever, using $400-500 a month worth of supplements a month that you get at GNC, then you got another guy coming up that can’t afford that stuff, so you got an unlevel playing field with that.”

“You have the pre-testosterone this and anabolic-booster that — it’s all legal,” The Snowman continued. “To me, what’s really the difference? That stuff is just as expensive as steroids anyway and not everyone can afford it, not everyone has access to that stuff. Just because it’s legal or not legal, who determines that stuff? The government. Some guy in a suit that’s never taken it, doesn’t know anything about it.”

From Sherdog article inteviewing Monson on Breen’s show.

That’s a pretty level-headed assessment. I have a friend who competes in “all-natural” bodybuilding competitions, where they do tons of testing. Yet his pantry looks like he ransacked GNC, and his body looks almost as cartoonish as regular body builders.

Point is, everyone does steroids.

Monson wrote that?

I thought it was an excerpt from the Mark McGwire autobiography haha

by ryanwk628 on Jul 23, 2009 1:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The problem with that assessment is that if everything becomes legal, the playing field will stay uneven. The guys with more money at their disposal will still outspend everyone else and get better, less risky, more effective steroids. More gifted athletes will still use to maintain their edge. The level playing field thing is perhaps the most bogus of all pro-steroid arguments.

Monson is the only fight that truly makes sense at this point, has a willing (even eager!) participant, presents a credible challenge, and could have a result that would be relevent to the HW standings.

Monson vs. Fedor.

It must happen.

Why are so many people on Monson's nuts?

He barely beat Big Country, and that was only b/c of terrible judging. Am I missing something?

by Patrick79x on Jul 23, 2009 1:24 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

what are the other options here?

by Phildo on Jul 23, 2009 1:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He beat Sergei, Fujita, Big Country and is on a 7 fight win streak.

by Jmend255 on Jul 23, 2009 1:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Let’s be more accurate… he straight overpowered Sergei’s neck and owned him.

Other than Sergie K., that 7 fight winning streak looks a bit weak....

Jimmy Ambriz
Sergei K.
Sergei Maslobojev
Roy Nelson (robbery)
Ricco Rodriguez (of celeb rehab fame)
Jimmy Ambriz again
Mark Kerr

by ANance on Jul 23, 2009 2:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Monson is by far the best choice to fight Fedor but he’s also the only one that has a shot of beating him because he’s used to fighting mulitple times a year and on short notice. Affliction just wants someone that is a semi-name and isn’t going to threaten Fedor that’s why Vitor will be the pick because he’ll be slow and ineffective HW and easy pickings for Fedor. It’s a shame because this would be a fight that would make me want to order the ppv which is something nobody else at this point can do.

by Raker on Jul 23, 2009 1:57 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don’t agree with this as Fedor wants both Rogers and Belfort, he is more likely to get cut by either of them than be submitted by Monson. Let’s remember Lindland made Fedor bleed, what do you think Belfort and Rogers would do to him?

by CSKit on Jul 23, 2009 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

With that said I’d still rather see Monson/Fedor.
