Strikeforce Fighters Brett Rogers and Fabricio Werdum Will Not Be Fighting Fedor Emelianenko at Affliction Trilogy

20090609121406_img_2092_medium MMA Junkie reports:

Strikeforce Director of Communications Mike Afromowitz told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) his organization's heavyweight fighters Fabricio Werdum and Brett Rogers will not be facing Fedor Emelianenko in the main event of "Affliction: Trilogy" on Aug. 1.
...

"It's safe to say neither Fabricio or Brett will be fighting on Aug. 1," Afromowitz said. "The plan is still for Fabricio to fight on Aug. 15, and we hope to have an opponent named soon.

"As for Brett, nothing is finalized, but he won't be fighting on Aug. 1."

I don't blame Strikeforce for not wanting to mess up their own August card to help out Affliction.

But as a fan I can't help but being disappointed that we won't get to see Fedor vs Werdum. Of course, I'm more disappointed with Josh Barnett for letting everyone down. But of the options out there, Werdum seemed like the most credible, even if not the best PPV draw.

At this point, I'm rooting for Jeff Monson as the best of the available options. I'd much rather see Vitor Belfort vs Jorge Santiago than any other fight on the card, so please please don't mess that one up too.

It’s sad that the best we can hope for is Fedor/Monson fight.

I'm honestly a Monson fan

I just think it’s waste to give him his big break with 10 dayd notice.

This is probably true. Especially since his chances of getting the shot go up the longer Fedor is out of the UFC.

And I heard Lashley is a no go as well.

Which means it’s either Monson or Belfort. They could always use Buentello instead. It would be a squash fight….

Nothing is really that good. Belfort vs. Fedor has an added negative bonus…. It gets rid of Belfort vs. Santiago, which was a very good fight on paper.

by RearNakedChoker on Jul 22, 2009 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Not a plethora more, no.

But it doesn’t take a very long list to string along fights. It’s when stuff really hits the fan—as it clearly is now—that these benefits of having an actual division (as the UFC does) become very stark. We’ve got a situation now where the top contenders to fight Fedor have all either tested positive for drugs, gotten themselves knocked out again recently, or are reasonably unwilling to fight Fedor on 10 days notice. That’s not everyday stuff, but it is obviously the sort of thing that the UFC is better able to deal with.

Then again, Jeff Monson.

It ends in an armbar or a strangle regardless.

by capital L on Jul 22, 2009 8:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Hopefully, this will get Fedor to realize that the UFC is where he should be. I think this could affect his view, and get him to understand that stability in the premier MMA organization is in his best interest, now that he’s heading towards the twilight of his career.

My only hope now is that the MMA Gods smile upon us and give us something better than Monson/Belfort. Not that I won’t be watching, but damn.

Personally, I was hoping for Brett Rogers.

i might sound crazy but......

I have always felt like in a grappling match monson could hold his own vs Fedor. I know were talking mma here and Fedor will likely eat monson alive on the stand up it would be very interesting to watch monson roll with Fedor on the ground.

With that said monson did fight like what was it 3 times in 4 weeks. Pretty good guy, basically just a warrior.

Affliction has it rough, no big draw names like lashley or tito, no credible opponents like werdum or mirko, there left with little options and rankings wise monson is the top bet

There might be better options out there, but I use Google Reader. Pretty simple to use, works well enough for me.

But I can’t even get on google at my job.

Ok I just did that but is there anyway I can get the updates automatically forwarded to my email at work through the google reader?

I dunno—probably? I’ve never tried to do it that way. I’m frankly kind of surprised no one has swooped in to deride Google Reader and suggest something far better. Sorry I can’t be of any more help.

Fuck Los Angeles, by the way

Their lack of reaction to that big fat cheater confirmed everything I feared/hated about that city.

My Response
Category: Sports

Many of you are wondering what’s happening. What I can say is that when applying for my license, the CSAC asked for me to submit a urine sample for testing prior to granting my license as they do with everyone, I believe. It was not a random test. I had no reason to believe there would be any issues and went in to submit my sample at the earliest possible opportunity on June 25th. I never once thought there would be a problem.

My representatives and I are working to gather as much info as possible and handle this situation as best as we can. I am embarrassed and want for nothing more than to resolve this issue and receive a license from the State of California as I have done many times already and for other states as well.
I am very thankful for all the great family, friends and fans that still support me.

Sincerely,

Josh

Nick Diaz Says If He Gets A Call From Affliction...

http://graciefighter.com/?page=news&PHPSESSID=7956d43760d63da66ce46fd34370a5be

Affliction: If they call, Nick will fight!

=)

On a lesser note, Ken Shamrock and Don Frye also want the fight.

Don Frye:

“If Tom was smart, he’d have me fighting Fedor instead of whoever he’s hiring on a one week notice,” Frye told MMAInsider. “My phone works if he wants a real fight with someone who sell a fight in four days, somebody who will beat that bald-headed commie too.”

“He ain’t seen anything I have to offer,” continued Frye. “He built his whole reputation (as a) waffle house chef. They’ve been serving him up ham and eggs with a side of canned tomatoes. I’ll bring it. And if he can bring it, you’ll have the best fight you’ve ever seen on the planet.”

=)

Hahaha!

Yes, bless his Mo. That would be all that is left after the fight.

Still loved the Waffle House Chef quote!

I have songoku, chuck Norris, and the fat guy from borat also ready for the fight.
This is awesomely ridiculous. New way to look badass: Ask to fight Fedor when there is no chance for the fight to happen.

Last Update For The Night

If Fedor vs Vitor holds up, then Affliction may get Jake Shields vs Jorge Santiago.

MMAWeekly issued this statement:

Just talked to Jake about an hour ago and he said that Affliction hasn’t contacted his management at all about this fight. He said he’d entertain the offer if they came calling, but for a fight like that on short notice they’d have to offers some $$$

I am out and I appreciate y’alls criticism.
Peace! =)

by MMASuPreMaCy on Jul 23, 2009 4:40 AM EDT reply actions

That doesn’t sound very likely.

Coker already made it clear that he wasn’t going to let one of his top HWs take Barnett’s place. I don’t see any reason to believe his position would any different in regards to letting his top WW/MW take Vitor’s place.

Apparently alot of people seems to like the belfort vs fedor matchup , abit wierd since belfort was out for a year some time back , because he tested positive for steroid use….lol

by Xtor on Jul 23, 2009 9:27 AM EDT reply actions

I have no problem with the Fedor-Vitor matchup. I just wish they would have found someone else and not fucked up the Vitor-Santiago match in the process.

by Steve4192 on Jul 23, 2009 9:30 AM EDT up reply actions

Exactly, although, a Jake Shields vs Jorge Santiago match-up makes it all better for me.
=)

by MMASuPreMaCy on Jul 23, 2009 12:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Not a chance in hell Coker lets that happen.

Coker has a business to run. He can’t be giving away the #1 ranked guy on his roster. He needs Jake to headline his own cards.
