Josh Barnett Tests Positive for Anabolic Steroid Drostanolone
The California State Athletic Commission has released a statement:
Barnett's June 25 drug test came back positive for 2a-methyl-5a-androstan-3a-ol-17-one, an anabolic steroid. CSAC learned of the results July 21 and immediately denied a license for Barnett. CSAC also informed the promoter of Barnett's August 1 bout against Fedor Emelianenko that the bout would not be approved.
"The license of Josh Barnett was denied pursuant to rule 303 of Title IV of the California Code of Regulations," said CSAC Interim Executive Officer Dave Thornton. "That rule prohibits the use of certain substances, including anabolic agents, by any boxer or MMA fighte
Dave Meltzer reports:
Barnett said he wanted to keep quiet as he prepares an appeal, and had nothing negative to say about the testing procedure.
"It's not a big conspiracy," said Barnett, who had a previous positive banned substance test result on his record.
...
While denying using steroids, Barnett said he was not in the dark as to why he tested positive. "I have a pretty good idea," he said. "I'm not really going to talk about it now." Atencio said he believed the commission was waiting for the result of Barnett's "B" sample to come back from the World Anti-Doping Agency lab at UCLA after the "A" sample came out positive before releasing a public statement. Potential punishment will not be determined until after the second sample is returned.
Correction: Zak Woods is reporting that the substance Barnett tested positive for is Drostanolone, NOT clostebol as previously reported.

CALIFORNIA STATE ATHLETIC COMMISSION DENIES LICENSE TO MIXED MARTIAL ARTS FIGHTER JOSH BARNETTAugust 1 Scheduled Bout Against Fedor Emelianenko Not Approved
SACRAMENTO – The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) has denied a license to Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter Josh Barnett after Barnett tested positive for a banned substance.
Barnett’s June 25 drug test came back positive for 2a-methyl-5a-androstan-3a-ol-17-one, an anabolic steroid. CSAC learned of the results July 21 and immediately denied a license for Barnett. CSAC also informed the promoter of Barnett’s August 1 bout against Fedor Emelianenko that the bout would not be approved.
"The license of Josh Barnett was denied pursuant to rule 303 of Title IV of the California Code of Regulations," said CSAC Interim Executive Officer Dave Thornton. "That rule prohibits the use of certain substances, including anabolic agents, by any boxer or MMA fighter."
Barnett’s test was observed in the presence of a CSAC representative and the sample was sent to the World Anti-doping Agency test facility at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) on June 25 for processing. CSAC was notified of the results yesterday.
Barnett has the right to appeal the denial of his license.
"Our primary concern is for the health and safety of fighters," said Thornton. "Anabolic agents and other banned substances put the users of those agents at risk, as well as their opponents. The commission simply will not tolerate their use."
CSAC has among the toughest drug testing standards of any Athletic Commission in the country. It is the only commission that requires drug tests to be observed and in the presence of a commission representative prior to a bout.

So the last challenge for Fedor from PRIDE isn’t worthy of the title…and thus, the PRIDE legacy is further tarnished…

From what WKR reported it looks like there are ways to test positive without actually taking the drug. With that said, I’m not holding out much hope, given Barnett’s history.

So he has been taking Megagrisevit Mono apparently?
Are you still considered guilty even if its trace amounts from as the article mentions, a secondary source?
I say screw it and let Fedor fight him anyways, if they have to, have the match in international waters and they can fight like Karate Kid training when Mr Miyagi rocks the boat when he is fishing. “HOW YOU BALANCE NOW DANIEL SAN AHAHAHAHA”
But in all seriousness this is depressing, I was really looking forward to Barnett finally facing Fedor, since Barnett is the second hardest heavyweight to rank, next to Fedor and this will give some kind of clear cut analysis.

There are no compelling arguments against Drostanolone. He’s fucked. It’s a designer steroid known for use in bodybuilding for muscle-defining techniques rather than strength gain. It can however help as a diuretic, which can’t be the case here. I’ve read that it can be used for muscle strength gain while also allowing you to lose weight or maintain weight, something Barnett WOULD be interested in doing.

Kid Nate,
Want to know why you can’t get credentials to UFC Events? It’s because of negative and crazy stuff like this.
Here we have the #2 Ranked Heavyweight in the world (I dispute that, but lets use it for arguments sake). He is fighting the #1 Heavyweight. Within 10 days of the fight, he gets busted for steroids for a SECOND time.
Do you focus on how Barnett’s career is over in the US? How this will be the end of Affliction? On what a fighter should get for being busted twice? Nope!
These posts are like the equivalent of The Landing on the Moon Conspiracy Theorists.
Zack Woods post is pointless because even he points out the steroid he is discussing is different then the one Barnett got busted for. Which makes it irrelevent to even post it.
There are so many ways to go after this news story, and you have found the most insane, conspiracy theory driven one.
Barnett is a cheater. That is the bottom line. He can’t pass a piss test to save his career. He pissed away (no pun intended) a potential 7 figure contract with the UFC if he were to win this fight. That is the news here. Not “Questions Airse About Josh Barnett’s Positive Test Results for Anabolic Steroid Clostebol.” Really, not one legit question has been raised.

"not one legit question has been raised"
Really? I’m pretty sure there isn’t a result on Sample B yet so….
by MauiPimpin on Jul 22, 2009 5:59 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
That’s not a question. That is how the commissions do this. They have a second sample to retest it. They have released the results of other fighters after the A Sample has come in. He is a second time offender until proven otherwise. Which is highly doubtful at this point.
I laugh that anybody is giving this guy the benefit of the doubt. If it was a UFC fighter, he wouldn’t be getting the benefit of the doubt if this was his first time getting caught with roids.

First being that you can expect Josh to never have another regulated fight in America. This is his second positive drug test – the first coming during post-fight testing following his UFC Heavyweight Title win over Randy Couture in 2002. I would think that one has to have significant doubts that Barnett has fought clean at any point since then as most of his fights were taking place in Japan outside of promotions with comprehensive drug testing policies.

“Drostanolone (trade name Masteron) is an anabolic/androgenic steroid. It is known to be highly androgenic and mildly anabolic.”

It’s a metabolite of Drostanolone, most likely done to try to cover it up from detection. Mostly for muscle-defining attributes, but can be used to gain strength while maintaining weight.

The physique defense (also used for Tim Sylvia) is a good way to suggest that only the flabby Fighters are doping. Unfortunately I suspect the advantages of a host of drugs (roids, hgh, blood doping) combined with limited testing make widespread doping quite likely.
We’ve seen it in enough other sports that I think its hard to not suspect.

Jeez, Josh. You really blew it this time.
The truth is that a lot of fighters are probably using banned substances and cycling them to avoid getting caught at fight time. We all know that. I don’t like it, but I choose to put it out of my mind so long as the vast majority of fighters are smart enough not to get caught. This allows for suspension of disbelief. So it’s not surprising that Barnett got caught—it’s happened before, and hey, the guy is a pro wrestler on the side. But he got caught for the second time, before the biggest fight of his career, in a non-random pre-fight test for his California fighter’s license. That is amazing.
Barring some unlikely development that exonerates him, I think Barnett has done irreperarable damage to his career. Well, maybe not in Japan.
