Report: Vitor Belfort Makes Verbal Agreement to Fight Fedor Emelianenko at Affliction: Trilogy

Picture_13_medium MMA Junkie reports:

...middleweight Vitor Belfort (18-8) has verbally agreed to the bout, and negotiations are currently in progress to finalize the financial terms of the deal.

Should Belfort's management and Affliction officials agree to terms, an official announcement is expected to be made sometime today.
...

(Xtreme Couture striking coach Shawn) Tompkins also said Belfort is currently walking around at approximately 205 pounds and that he could easily make 210-215 pounds should he commit to a heavyweight contest.

I have to say none of this is the outcome I'd been hoping for, but my hat is off to Tom Atencio for putting something together on short notice.

We'll be on the Affliction conference call at 3:30pm ET and I'll update with reports.

Jake Rossen comments on the match:

Belfort appears rejuvenated, but an extra 30 pounds of Emelianenko is a big load to carry. ...

Truth is, there should be a laundry list of athletes getting in line for a late shot at the sport's current king of the ring. Beat him and you're deified; get twisted up and you can lean on the excuse that you had only a few days to prepare. What does anyone have to lose, besides a few veneers?

Hmm...

Does anyone give Vitor a chance in hell for an upset? Or are we going to be watching Fedor pound him in about 30 seconds? lol

That’s actually pretty smart. With the rumors of Belfort going to UFC, why not have Fedor destroy him first?

Vitor's a southpaw

who’s really quick and hits really hard.
Potentially he could catch Fedor early.
But no. No chance in hell.

Shawn Tompkins, head trainer at Xtreme Couture, has confirmed to The Fight Network that Vitor Belfort has signed on to fight Fedor Emelianenko August 1st at the Affliction ‘Trilogy’ event in Anaheim, California.

Belfort was originally scheduled to fight Jorge Santiago on the same card in a middleweight bout. The main event was forced to be changed after Josh Barnett failed a pre fight drug test by the California State Athletic Commission.

Apparently there’s red tape to cut through to get Rogers thus the hold up. If Belfort was really the #1 choice, it would already be announced. Affliction is trying to work a deal to get Rogers from Strikeforce. It would involve money going to Rogers as well as a rental fee to Strikeforce.

But If they get Brett Rogers to fight Fedor I will actually buy this PPV and I have never even considered buying an affliction card. Brett Rogers is a blue collar hero i as much as i love Fedor I would love to see him get KO’d by Rogers

by Crookswood on Jul 22, 2009 4:03 PM EDT reply actions

Do most people agree Belfort is a bad idea?

Just wanted to hear your opinions , I think it’s very common sense that mma fans would want Fedor to fight either Werdum Monson or Rogers than Vitor Belfort . Im not sure I even have to explain this – but basically I feel that Belfort is bearly a top 10 middleweight and that says it all . So he KOed Lindland , BJ Penn KOed Sherk why not get him ?
Bret Rogers is the most appealing option in my eyes

by JoelMan on Jul 22, 2009 4:12 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t think Strikeforce would lend Rogers.

Other than Rogers, I’d prefer to see Fedor fight Monson, but Monson, Werdum, and Belfort are really all junk options.

by Foxskinrug on Jul 22, 2009 4:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Belfort is a bad option for two reasons:

1.) He’s a middleweight moving up in weight. Tompkins claims he’ll be at 215, but that’ll probably make his cardio much more susceptible to gassing out against the more powerful Emelianenko if it hits a clinch game or the floor. Speedy hands won’t last long unless he KO’s Fedor quickly. He’ll tire faster, hands will lose speed, he’ll be in trouble.

Also, Belfort doesn’t have the power that Fedor exhibits in the clinch game or grappling game. I could see him being overpowered quickly.

2.) It takes him away from the Santiago match-up, and now Affliction has to go out and get someone to fight Santiago.

Feasibly, they could scratch Gormley and pit Fedor vs. Rothwell for all I care. I’d rather see that then another great match-up scrapped for Fedor vs. Vitor, which I don’t think is that intriguing. Another HW is the best possibility, not Vitor.

This has the potential to be the biggest story of the year.

Dana White announces that he is interested in having Belfort return to the UFC to face Anderson Silva at middleweight.

Vitor, who’s on a bit of a comeback, is set to face the surging Jorge Santiago at Affliction Trilogy.

Barnett, who was set to face Fedor Emelianenko — the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, has tested positive for steroids and has been removed from the card.

Vitor steps up to fight Fedor, and upsets the 30-1 MMA legend.

Dana White shits in his pants, as he signs quite possibly the best challenger to take on Anderson Silva’s belt.

Vitor fights Silva.

Vitor wins, the world explodes.
