Who Fights Fedor Emelianenko at Affliction: Trilogy?

In the immortal words of Mr. Mackey, "Drugs are bad, mmmkay?" According to Sherdog, the California State Athletic Commission will refuse to license Josh Barnett for his WAMMA heavyweight title fight against champion Fedor Emelianenko as the result of a "positive test result." Barnett previously tested positive for steroids following his 2002 victory over Randy Couture.
Barnett, for lack of a better phrase, leaves the Emperor without any clothes. With the third Affliction event just 11 days away, Tom Atencio must be scrambling to find a suitable opponent. Names thrown around like Vitor Belfort (a middleweight) and Bobby Lashley (greener than photosynthesis) don't do much to inspire the MMA world.
Who could Affliction pick up in a perfect world? Let's take a look:
- Fabricio Werdum - One of Afflcition's biggest goals should be to find a heavyweight (or big light heavyweight) to replace Barnett. We've already seen Emelianenko fight someone coming up multiple weight classes to fight him, and it wasn't pretty. Werdum seems like the most logical choice. He's a legit heavyweight, he has some exposure from the UFC, and with his August 15th fight with Alistair Overeem being recently canceled, he should be in shape.
- Jeff Monson - Monson is contracted to fight August 29th against Anthony Sylvester for the Rock N Rumble promotion. With the money Affliction "saves" following Barnett's removal, they could pay Monson and the RNR promotion in the event Monson couldn't compete at the end of the month. Monson's stated that he believes he's destined to beat Fedor, and fate works in mysterious ways.
- Brett Rogers - It would make an good human interest piece, if nothing else. Rogers goes from changing tires at Sam's Club to steamrolling former UFC champion to fighting greatest heavyweight of all time. Unfortunately, Emelianenko's chin doesn't crack when you tap it.
- Ben Rothwell/Gilbert Yvel/Paul Buentello - All three are fighting on the card already. Yvel and Buentello face each other and Rothwell's scheduled against Chase Gormley. It would be much easier to slide one of these guys into the main event and find a replacement for the odd man out instead.
- Tito Ortiz - If only for the fact that Tito always finds his name on these sorts of lists. Tito's expressed interest in a fight with Emelianenko on occasion, though I imagine much of that is posturing. This would give him an opportunity to put the proverbial money where his mouth is, though I would expect that money would run in the seven figure range.

Probably, but it’s better than blowing millions on a ridiculous payroll. Their big main event is scrapped. Anything other than Fedor vs. Barnett is a huge step down.

excellent point. i’d imagine a good portion of the people who’d pay for this card are mainly interested in seeing fedor smash whoever they put in front of him. not like the barnett fight was expected to be a grueling war.

Depends on Fedor’s opponent.
Honestly, I don’t know how well their marketing campaign is doing. I would say not well, but they also have some pretty prominent rumors that they almost did 150k in buys in the last event. Still doesn’t help because their payroll was enormous.
I think there are quite a few people who will be bummed and not buy it.

So just blow the rest of your money on Tito. He can actually move the interest /PPV meter in your favor a little.7 figures?
Since when has fighter payroll ever stopped Affliction from doing anything? If, Tom A had any hair it would all be pulled out by now. What a mess with only 10 days to go before the fight card

from a fight standpoint, i’d like to see Monson get the crack at Fedor. i like the way both guys fight, and you know Monson’s in shape since he fights every two weeks or so.
by bobthewriter on Jul 22, 2009 10:46 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Honestly, everyone on that list gets trounced by Fedor. Monson’s stand-up is god awful, and he’s still had some gas tank issues in his last few fights. Sure, he’s strong, but I could see Fedor’s overhand right blasting him pretty quickly in the first round.
The best fight is Werdum, hands down.

and it was more of a clip of Brock’s elbow to the back of Randy’s head – not exactly questionable as to why Randy went down – but the hammerfists Brock applied did not knock Randy out – he was simply overwhelmed by the hammerfists
Randy came out of that fight looking a lot better than Frank and had an awesome gameplan – I’d rather see Brock rematch Randy than Frank anyday

My vote is for Werdum strictly from a fan and realist perspective. My fantasy vote is for Tito, cause it would be awesome. However, if Tito was serious about mending fences with Dana and coming back to the UFC, he’d be stupid to take the fight, considering Afflictions lifespan has just been cut incredibly short, and he’d mess up his chances of finishing out his career in the Octagon. Last thing Tito wants is to be erased from the UFC history books like so many other fighters. But then again, Tito has been known to hog more than his fair of stupidity over the years…

my point kinda – I am going off of how Affliction tried to use NASCAR as a promotional tool and we know how that went, but with Twitter it’s cheaper and you have a much larger audience – they are probably spent on the marketing side of this fight card so Twitter seems like an alternative that would benefit Affliction

I also voted Rogers. The rest don't have the appeal that Rogers does
He’s twice the size and speed of most in their HW division. The turning point for me was when he defeated Arlovski. I don’t think he’d make the same mistake as Andre did if he got to fight Fedor. In fact, I think it would make the event rather salvagable. Being as how Overeem is out and Barnett disqualified, there looks like a potential matchup to be had.
I hope it happens for Rogers.
by JAYGK95 on Jul 22, 2009 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
If they had two weeks to promote it, Tito would be the right move.
But a week out, I think Rogers, Werdum, and Monson are the best options, with Rogers leading in my eyes based on the momentum from the Arlovski win.
Remember, Brett Rogers fought on that same Strikeforce-based Affliction infomercial, and I’d suspect that a big part of Afflictions audience crosses over with Strikeforce anyway.
Besides, the fight is short notice against the #1 Heavyweight in the World. A Puncher’s Chance is all a guy would have…why not pick the biggest puncher on the list?

I don’t see anyone on the list beating Fedor, so I figure why waste Rogers who’s not ready for a fight like that at all, Werdum is probably more deserving but would get smashed, so why not Rothwell. He’s a veteran pro with good skills. He should at least be able to put up a decent fight before Fedor puts him away.

I don’t think you can at all. I don’t think you can compare both fights and take something away from them to say that Rogers LOOKED better against AA than Fedor.
Rogers came forward and caught AA instantly. I just don’t see how the fights are comparable. The only comparison I can make is that AA makes huge mistakes. Open chin vs. Fedor and Rogers.

“If Barnett is out, should Affliction dump the card?” – 79 articles

by Nick Thomas on Jul 22, 2009 11:13 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
"One can assume that Barnett tested positive for some form of performance enhancing drugs…"
Yes, one can, but responsible journalists won’t.
A better way to write this would have been:
The California State Athletic Commission will refuse to license Josh Barnett for his WAMMA heavyweight title fight against champion Fedor Emelianenko as the result of a “positive test result;” Barnett was previously popped for steroids following his 2002 victory over Randy Couture.
This could be coke. This could be meth. We don’t know. Acting like because he did one drug one time means he’ll do the same one this time is a leap of inference.

I debated it for awhile. Maybe it’s just my lenient stance on steroids/PED’s, and I just didn’t think it was that harmful of a statement. But, people go nuts when steroids pops up, so I figure it’s best to play “responsible journalist” this time.

sham-WOW!
Imo, this is a huge blow on many levels.
-to Affliction. This is THE fight that many fans have wanted for years and without it, the card is severely weakened. I am probably not going to order it now, though I will wait to see who they put in against Fedor.
-to Fedor. This is the win that would silence many of his doubters (not myself, I’m no doubter!). The #2 ranked HW and top opponent available. Now who can he fight that would add that legitimacy?
-to the fans. This truly is a fight that we have wanted to see since the Pride days and it was sooooo close.
But there are a few winners…
-whomever replaces Barnett. Here is your golden ticket. Go beat the man and you will have a lot of doors opened for you.
-Dream. If Barnett IS done in the USA, I think there still is some demand for this fight and Dream is the most likely place.
-UFC. The widely considered top opponent for Fedor outside of the UFC is now out. Just a little more incentive for Fedor to come to the UFC and one less guy the UFC needs to take off the market so he doesn’t have quality opponents.
So who is out there:
Werdum-fair or not, he has a bad reputation as boring and isn’t a very attractive ppv option.
Overeem-This is the fight I want to see, but injury has him out of the picture for now.
Rogers-Does Strikeforce want to see their guy demolished? And yes, he would get demolished.
CC-Lots of demand for this fight. Great timing by the UFC.
Monson-Again, one of the fights I want for Fedor. Makes the most sense to me, but again is Monson enough of a draw?
Rothwell/Yvel/Buentello-As fun as these guys can make an undercard, they have little appeal vs Fedor, imo.
Arlovski/Sylvia-No thanks.
Tito-Interesting. A draw. Unfortunately Tito isn’t ready and I think he is smart enough not to lower his stock by taking a beatdown at this point in his career.
The obvious choice…Ray Mercer!!
Actually, in all seriousness, I say get Ricardo Arona on the phone ASAP.

Actually, the more I think about it, this is EXACTLY the kind of fight that Tito could take and end up smelling like a rose. He “saves” the card, looking like a warrior in the process, he can take credit for the ENTIRE buyrate, and even if he gets smashed, he has the “short notice” excuse to save face, not to mention fighting up a weight class.

I said it in the other threat, but I think Tito and Dana’s reconciliation puts this out the window.
If this happened 2 weeks ago, game on for Tito, but now that he’s finally realized that the UFC is his best bet, and both he and Dana have agreed to try and work it out. I’m not sure if Affliction can offer enough money to make up the possibility that he’s throwing away with the UFC by taking the fight.

Fuck it, give me a couple hundred grand and I’ll fight the son of a bitch. He can’t be that tough right?

Mike Straka is an idiot, and he may just be saying steroids because he heard “positive test”

I can’t take Straka seriously when it comes to anything MMA, but he may be legitimately good at finding out stories. After watching some episodes of Fight Game, and both him and some of the panelists making outrageous claims or errorneous statements, I can’t take it.

I’m definitely not on board with his opinion to move Ortiz into the mix. 10 days to promote it? No way… Ortiz will need a huge paycheck to take it. And Ortiz will be alone in self-promoting it, Fedor doesn’t help.

I thought I was looking forward to this match, but now that it’s canceled I realize I not really did. Or is it because the positive test kinda insta killed Barnett’s relevance?

Wow, this is horrible news. I feel bad for the affliction guys.
My vote is for Rogers, he has wrestling and fists of fury, and isn’t afraid of anything. It’s about achieving the ‘american dream’, and the 1% rocky style chance he has at beating him is story enough to convince me to watch it.
Vitor doesn’t sound like a great idea, he’s been proven to not be top caliber… rogers just hasn’t. He’s beaten everyone in front of him, including the pitbull, in less time than fedor.

I wonder if this will piss Fedor off, in terms of their friendship if it is steroids.
Because it shows that he would try to deceive the general public to obtain an advantage against someone he considered a friend in a fight, which is a pretty scumbag thing to do overall.
Worst news for Affliction ever.
The UFCs had a good habit lately of locking up heavyweight prospects, but Affliction would be better off putting Fedor against a heavyweight instead of a middleweight.
If Fedor lost to Vitor, it would be awful, Kimbo/Seth style of awful.
It really is too bad that Overeem is injured, I think he is the best freelance heavyweight out there to challenge Fedor.

Rogers would be great....
Subbed in 10 seconds or possibly KOing Fedor. I’d want to see which happens. Tito would be fine too. Nothing outside of Lesnar could substitute for Barnett.
