I mean, I guess it’s a rubber match and Cantwell is very young so this is a good chance to develop, but Steve needs to dominate this fight.

Oh, and Huerta ain’t 7-0.

IMHO this is one of the best Fight Night cards we have seen in a while. I’m excited!

really excited about this one

i like both guys and enjoyed their previous two matches … i think Cantwell takes this one again, though. i’ve been really impressed with the way he’s evolved his game, and if Stann doesn’t bring anything new, he could have a long night.

Stann is one of those guys who wouldn’t even be in the UFC or WEC if he didn’t look like a live action GI Joe doll. If he was ugly he’d be on Strikeforce undercards at best.

And I say that as a fan of the guy. But the dude just does not belong in the UFC LHW division. Just doesn’t. Not when you’re getting subbed in the first round by the bottom of the division and your standup is rudimentary.

Soszynski is far from the bottom of the division, my friend. He’s 5-0 in his last 5 fights and has a pretty pivotal fight with Brandon Vera coming up.

Stann does need some improvement, but he’s relatively new to the MMA game don’t forget. If the UFC is going to have an exciting LHW filling the undercard, why not Stann who has a pretty rabid following and a great story.

Soszynski is literally at the bottom of the division. He’s 19 in the BE rankings; while I’m sure he’s trending up, he’s still at the bottom.

Stann is a very fun fighter, but frankly the dude wasn’t able to hold his belt in the WEC LHW division. Getting sucked into the UFC where a guy like Sosynski is rated #19 was like diving to the bottom of the Marianas trench. He’s just out of his depth. He needs to go polish his skills somewhere else for a while. He’s just not ready for the bigs.

Dan Miller is out of his fight against Aaron Simpson.

Ed Herman has been named his replacement.

Stann

Will he get cut if he loses? (0-2) Like watching the guy but I’m not sure he as ready as Cantwell for the big leauges.

I assumed they would skip 3.

I dislike Matt Hughes and Twidder.

Again, the rematch no one was clamoring for.

Is Silva drinking on the job or something?

I am really surprised they went with this fight, but from a business standpoint, it looks like a way to cut someone from the roster (I am guessing Stann will NOT win and will be cut). I am sure there are other UFC light heavyweights that both of these guys can fight though. At least it is not a main event, so it really doesn’t matter too much that this fight was matched up.

"I am sure there are other UFC light heavyweights that both of these guys can fight"

it’s a crime that brian stann/houston alexander hasn’t been set up by now.

as for stann/cantwell 3, wasn’t this fight supposed to happen as their first fights in the ufc, but stann got injured? maybe i’m remembering wrong. either way, should be a short fight!

by woooburn on Jul 21, 2009 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, the good news is one of these guys will surely be cut after this, and we won’t have to see that person in the UFC anymore.

Well, at least we can agree

that Cantwell is 22.

Cantwell needs newer challenges; he beat Stann pretty convincingly last time, this fight does nothing for him.

Waste of a match…

this card is absolutely sick. i cannot wait.

That was a real kick and good for laughs and lashings of the old ultraviolent.

I can confirm

Stann vs. Cantwell and Wilson vs. Pyle will be on the prelim card.

Huh

I was hoping they’d go back to five-fight televised cards for UFNs, since the last two only had four scheduled fights (plus any prelims that ended up being shown). But based on your report of Stann/Cantwell and Wilson/Pyle getting bumped down to the prelims, I assume the televised card will now be:

Nate Diaz vs. Melvin Guillard
Roger Huerta vs. Gray Maynard
Tim Credeur vs. Nate Quarry
Carlos Condit vs. Chris Lytle

Why not put Stann/Cantwell on the main card? Even though those two aren’t top-level fighters, it’s certainly not going to last long. I wouldn’t mind seeing Pyle/Wilson get bumped up either.
