Dana White talks about the difficulties in signing Fedor and says Fedor beating his past champions Tim Sylvia and Andrei Arlovski means little.

"How can you call Fedor the best in the world? He's a heavyweight and look at the guys he's fought." "When you say Fedor beat all the big names, that was back in PRIDE. You're talking what four years ago? So wait a minute, maybe Muhammed Ali is the best pound for pound best fighter in the world. By calling him best pound-for-pound in the world, that is insane."

...."I think if we put Ray Mercer in the UFC, it might be the first death in the UFC."

By the same measure

how the hell is Anderson Silva considered the best p4p?? Irvin, Cote, Leites, C’mon! Overrated until he beats some above average fighters, (under 38yrs old-Hendo, Frankilin 2x yeah but still not that impressed)

Doesn't anybody think before they speak/post anymore?

by Big Boob Lover on Jul 20, 2009 1:38 PM EDT reply actions

Who somebody has beaten is only one of the criteria for p4p discussions. Record proves little, especially when talking about such an abstract concept. I think Fedor and Anderson are the best fighters because of the way they fight and how skilled they are as fighters, not because they’ve beaten up guys like James Irvin and Zuluzinho.

i was just gonna say

Alves, Penn and Fitch compared to Leites, Cote and Irvin? GSP is P4P the best fighter in the world and I don’t think anybody can say otherwise

by Crookswood on Jul 20, 2009 1:48 PM EDT reply actions

I'd agree.

As much as I like Anderson and respect Fedor, its hard to argue with the streak that GSP is on both in who he has beaten and how he has beaten them.

However, in terms of P4P greatness, I think GSP may have to keep an eye on his re-view mirror to see Machida come up fast. Not necessarily because I think Machida is better, but because he has a ton of talented challengers to work through in the near future.

White's right

I actually agree with what White says here…Fedor is my favorite fighter but if u decide on p4p according to recent competition than Fedor is way behind people like GSP or Anderson. As for the best heavyweight I think Fedor should definitely STILL get the nod , however he is running out of competition …

by JoelMan on Jul 20, 2009 2:03 PM EDT reply actions

P4P is not a great argument and highly debatable. What is most important is that most fighters, media, and fans claim Fedor as the #1 fighter in the world. =)

it has to be GSP in his last three fights he has taken the number 2 and 3 WW and the number 1 LW in the world and made them look like amatuers

….“I think if we put Ray Mercer in the UFC, it might be the first death in the UFC.”

Yep, Ray has some real power. That with 4oz gloves would be stupid silly.

Dana has this 100% correct.

GSP #1 P4P Fighter In The World

Fedor #1 Heavyweight In The World

See, what I love about fighters like Fedor, GSP, Anderson Silva, Penn, Sanchez, Nick Diaz etc, is that they don’t care how they win a fight. They just win. Whatever it takes. Sub, KO, TKO, grinding it out. When I heard Alves say he was gonna KO GSP like a broken record he started to annoy me. I thought, maybe this is just to throw GSP off a little but no, he really was trying to go for a ko only. That sucks. Do you want a KO, Thiago? Or do you want that belt? That’s the feeling I get when I see Fedor/GSP/Diego fight. Whatever it takes strategy. Wish all these fighters had this mentality. Wand is one of my all time favs but he is and always be that type of fighter thats doesn’t get it either. Hopefully Thiago wises up if he ever gets a rematch.

GSP: I pulled my groin.

Greg Jackson: I don't care Georges! HIT HIM WITH YOUR GROIN!

I agree, except I’d probably take Anderson Silva out of that list after the last two fights…

by -Sam on Jul 20, 2009 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah but I’m blaming those on fluke injuries and flops. lol These things are out of Silvas control. He finished Hendo on the ground. That shows you right there that he just wants the win anyway he can get it.

The Leites fight may have been out of his control but against Cote it didn’t even look like he was trying.

Some people might say that winning a fight makes you a better fighter but I don’t agree with that.- BlueberryMuffin

Fedor is pound for pound because hes only 6 ft tall 230 and beats guy who were once champions and outweight him by 30 pounds+. Fedor in fact is probably one of the smallest of the HWs yet still does not use cutting weight to gain an advantage like most of the other disputed p4p champions. How often does silva fight contenders that are significantly bigger than him? GSP could be tied for first seeing how he dispatched of thiago so easily. But fedor has never been caught even when headslammed. Id say lyoto is #3 and possibly number 1 once he defends his belt a few times

Yes, this is exactly the way I look at it. If you cut significants amounts of weight and only beat people the same size or smaller, you aren’t going to be ranked higher p4p than someone who beats everyone regardless of size.

DAMN LUKE

I never heard you flipped out like that before

If fedor hasn’t read the contract at least he can still hear this interview. That will motivate him to to be heavyweight for Dana White for sure.

If Lesnar left the UFC tomm. and went out and got KTFO by Bret Rodgers, Dana would tell us he always knew Brock was overrated.

No, Dana…I don’t remember when you hyped Arlovski as some unstoppable, unbeatable force that moved like a MW and had a cool fang mouthguard and wild hair. I don’t remember that at all.

Fedor fanatics have a tendency to over inflate Fedor’s opponents, and then the second Fedor’s get the W over them, completely denigrate them so that nobody else gets the glory of defeating them. We now know Arlovski didn’t belong anywhere near the main event scene in 2009, but if you had asked every Fedor fanatic out there about Arlovski before he fought Fedor, they would have told you he’s the solid number two MMA heavyweight fighter in the world and would spank all of the UFC heavyweights. Now that a fight with Fedor isn’t on the horizon, they have no reason to protect Arlovski and his plummet from the rankings is proof of that.

We’ve now seen Fedor’s last two opponents get whooped worse than Fedor whooped them by much less touted opponents. In hindsight, those were not that impressive wins and Fedor should have been fighting better fighters instead of 2006’s stars. Sylvia and Arlovski would still be heavily ranked if that was not the case. How much would a fighter jump up in the rankings if he were to defeat Arlovski and Sylvia consecutively at this time? One spot?

Fedor is obviously one of the best heavyweights of all time, because he hasn’t lost, but he obviously has not been constantly tested his entire career. (The fact that only his wins over Cro Cop, Nogueira, Herring and Coleman are brought up from his Japan run shows that it was not the unimaginable accomplishment his fanatics make it out to be). Hopefully he signs with an organization that can give him the competition he deserves. And hopefully MMA rankers will wise up if he runs off to Japan to fight middleweights and GIANTS and remove him from the rankings top spot.
