The Week in Quotes: July 12th - 18th

YOU JUST TOOK HOME A $100K BONUS, WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO NEXT?
"I’ve been pretty poor the past few years, so after getting this bonus, I’ll have to fight again in like eight or nine years." - Tom Lawlor, who received a $100k bonus for submitting CB Dollaway at UFC 100. (MMA Weekly)
"That’ll probably be how long it takes me to run out of money if I keep living at the standard of living I’ve been at. Look for me in about 2018." - Lawlor.
"[At] UFC 200 I’ll be fighting the serpent from Revelations, as the world is coming to an end in about nine years." - Lawlor, quickly becoming one of my favorite fighters.
"I’m not sure what else I can do. Maybe the Techno Viking dance." - Lawlor. Unfortunately, Pat Barry already beat you to it. (And it'll be hard to top.) (MMA Junkie)
I HAVEN'T SEEN A HEEL LIKE THIS SINCE SGT. SLAUGHTER BECAME AN IRAQI SYMPATHIZER
"I’d like to see him fight Cain my teammate you know or Shane Carwin or some of these other guys because I don’t think he’s technically a top fighter." - Mike Swick. Well, technically, he's the UFC heavyweight champ. And, technically, he just beat three legitimate heavyweights in a row. And, technically, he's the best thing to happen to the UFC since Liddell/Ortiz II. (Cage Writer)
"I mean we’re not WWE. You know, we’re a different organization." - Swick. Thanks for the clarification.
"And I'm thinking what is that a special occasion? You're married to Sable, you think that would be happening all the time." - Former UFC heavyweight champ Randy Couture, who knows a thing or two about bedding women. (Cage Writer)
MURRRRCKED
"When Lesnar didn't come after me, that really threw me off." - Former UFC heavyweight champ Frank Mir. (Las Vegas Review-Journal)
"He ran like a lightweight. It's my fault. I should have trained that he would be intimidated from the standup." - Mir, revisionist. You also might have wanted to train not getting smashed in the face.
"I basically was within a half-an-inch of catching him." - Mir. Really?
"ESPN showed him spitting and hollering. My children are looking. I’m shaking my head, pointing at my kids and going, ‘That’s not how you want to do it, guys.'" - Mir. Bullshit. You were still shaking the cobwebs out of your head.
#SHORTESTMMABOOKS GETTING BY ON YOUR OWN MERITS BY KIT COPE AND SHAWN TOMPKINS
"If she keeps training the way she's training now, she's gonna get her ass kicked. And that's a lot of ass." - Kit Cope (2-4), speaking about former squeeze Gina Carano. Cope knows a thing or two about getting your ass kicked. (MMA Junkie)
"If she keeps training where she is, she's over at Xtreme Fashion, she's not gonna get what she needs." - Cope
"He hasn't seen her train in three years. What does he know?" - Xtreme Couture trainer Shawn Tompkins (0-4). (Cage Writer)
"I do remember this though, I was the one walking through the door where he's the Muay Thai coach and I was the one coaching the owner. Who's the better coach?" - Tompkins. Cope teachers Muay Thai at the Team Wand gym.
"There is media that's in a very safe place." - Cope, on a Gina Carano sex tape.
"Come on kiddies! Listen to the whole interview. The sex tape thing was OBVIOUSLY a joke response to a listener’s question." - Cope. Sounds like someone's still a little pussy-whipped. (The Underground)
"I just need to add, I've smashed a lot finer than that." - Cope. Just like all the smashing you do in the cage, amirite?
I AM SO HIGH. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT'S GOING ON RIGHT NOW.
"Most of the guys that fought Lyoto… found a problem with patience, with finding the right moment to attack, or to counter-strike him. Some guys try to rush it too much; some guys try to stay too patient, (and) they start to get nervous because of that." - Mauricio Rua. Basically, some guys do this, some guys do that, and all of them fail. (MMA Weekly)
"I think the key is the timing of the fight, to get the feeling of when to engage and when to counter-strike him." - Rua. Maybe if you get just a little high.
YOU WANT SOME REAL PRO WRESTLING BS?
"UFC is not out of the picture." - Former UFC light heavyweight champ Tito Ortiz. Christ, I thought both of you said you weren't coming back as long as Dana White was in charge. (TapouT Radio)
"So we kind of amended and squashed things, which is great." - Ortiz. Depends on your definition of "great."
"I gotta thank Strikeforce for giving me an opportunity and I want to thank Affliction for giving me an opportunity." - Ortiz. Now I really want to see you fight Fedor Emelianenko.
WHITE NOISE
"I went to EA Sports. Know what EA Sports said? ‘It’s not a sport. This isn’t a sport. We would never get involved in something like this.’" - UFC President Dana White. I have this weird feeling that you're lying, Dana. (Yahoo)
"We come out with a video game and now they want to come out with a video game? Fuck you." - White. EA already has a playable version. This shit does not pop up over night, if you get my drift.
PARTING SHOTS
"I drank so much that I forgot my whole name." - UFC welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre, on celebrating after his UFC 100 victory over Thiago Alves. (GSP's blog)
"St. Pierre is a great fighter, fought very well, but I couldn’t find myself in the fight." - Thiago Alves. I found him on his back throughout the fight. (Tatame)
"It’s instinct." - Former Pride middle- and welterweight champ Dan Henderson, with the only explanation needed for his atomic bomb on Michael Bisping. (MMA Junkie)
"I honestly don’t know what happened to me out there." - Michael Bisping. Try circling right. (Daily Star)

No no no…I SPECIFICALLY read several comments here calling Supremacy names and saying there was no demo. One guy was even a former video game journalist. So there is no way a playable demo is out there.

You have really poor comprehension. No one said there isn’t a demo. The entire argument revolved around the timeframe of development and at which point the project was greenlighted.

“how are those screen shots looking? Or the roster of fighters they’re modeling? Errr… Wait… No fucking such thing.”
“Where is this supposed playable game?”
-both of those from the guy who writes “d00der” in his posts. Fuck me if I’m out of line, but when I hear words like “supposed” and “No fucking such thing” with regards to screen shots, it makes me think you are skeptical.

Maybe, while you had all the free time in the world to stalk that thread and barely comment in it, you would have had the time to read the rest of the comments where I clearly suggest that a demo could (and almost certainly does) exist. The existence of a demo does not quantify to a product that is available for public consumption or the marketplace. You can demo two faceless models (which is not to say that’s what they’ve done). It’s all there, trust me. Maybe try less broad strokes next time?
The whole argument revolves around when they began production of the game. Not whether or not it exists. I never argued that they began production after the THQ game released. That much is evident, d00der.

Not really
It was a long argument over some very basic facts. The point is, Sup was very quick (as is the norm) to bend the facts and vague-available-info to appear as though Dana was being a total fabricator and liar. I just brought my experience with development timeframes into the equation to show that his idea of how Dana was a liar was pretty far off and he could be honest about the events that occured with EA. Is the game being developed and could be pretty far along now? Yeah, possibly. A lot of that has to do with how short a development window an MMA game could have. But the fact remains- they didn’t show shit at E3, when EA knows full well the exposure would add exponential sales to the product. They showed a logo and a drawing of a faceless fighter. That tells me that the game isn’t far along enough that it began development two years ago, like Sup was (originally) suggesting. Could Dana be embellishing on the dramatics of the situation? Possibly. Do I believe that EA told him that they had no desire to make an MMA game and struck when the iron was hot? Yeah, I do. It adds up; Dana and Lorenzo said they wanted EA to make the UFC title before they moved forward with THQ, and that EA said they didn’t want to make an MMA game. How that is such an unreasonable story, I have no idea. EA wanted into the MMA

Accidentally posted pre-emptively...
EA wanted into MMA when it became too good to pass up. And of course they should; they make sports games (they used to make an Arena Football title, for shit’s sake). You’ll notice I never demonized them for their behavior towards Dana, but this is how EA has always done business. It’s part of the reason they’re so fucking successful, but I have a well documented history of not liking EA’s business practices that reaches further back than any of this news (even on these forums). If Dana’s recollection of the events is accurate (which would seem to me the only reason to have such a strong response to their development of an MMA game), then he has a right to feel resentful. Maybe not to the degree that he’s exhibiting, which is not for any of us to decide, but it’s clear he’s upset with how EA received him previously and how they’re regarding MMA and trying to covet his talent.

Yeah...
here’s the thing.
You can be on either side of this argument and be right depending on how you choose to define “in development.” I have no doubt that EA was interested in making an MMA game for this full 2 years or whatever, I also have no doubt that in negotiating with the UFC they tried to undersell their interest. Now I don’t think they’ve been working on a game for 2 years so from that aspect it was not “in development” but if you choose to define “in development” as “wanting to make a game and having it on the table” then sure.

My point all along was that they prospect the creation of a lot of titles (many of which we never see or hear of and never see the light of day), and two years ago they probably had lukewarm interest in pursuing their likely-to-already-exist in some pre-production form MMA game— whether that would end up to be a UFC title, a Strikeforce title or otherwise. Of course EA was prospecting an MMA title— it’s EA. An example I made in that thread is that EA likely has a pre-production IP for a swimming title based on Michael Phelps’ success in the olympics. They have the resources to do that. But they didn’t pull the trigger until MMA got huge. The idea that they waited for THQ’s title to release or do big numbers is silly, but they seemingly told Dana they didn’t want in on the MMA business when it’s now clear that they do. If they were into it when Sup said they were, the title would be on shelves right now. It most definitely would have landed before THQ’s title and it would be a UFC game (look at the lengths they’ve gone to to corner the NFL video game business). I never agreed that the situation is as dire as it’s being made to seem (as escalating as the argument became about these facts); just that Dana probably isn’t simply on a smear campaign against EA because he needs to smite huge corporations to get a boner.

Well…you’re not exactly EA are you?
And I didn’t say I defined it that way. I’m just saying the argument can be warped severely one way or the other.
In truth as I said I think EA negotiated with the UFC poorly and wanted an MMA game all this time. THQ’s success absolutely got them to actually get moving on it.

Whats up with the “Just Bleed” painted on his chest? That is kinda dumb to me. You want your opponent to just bleed? Why? Bleeding is not going to win you the fight, and even if it does, when a fighter is stopped from bleeding it is ussually a huge let down. Fedor’s only loss is from cuts and we all know that was bull shit. Shouldn’t he write, “just let me knock you unoncious”?

Is there some kind of tenative fight scheduled between Lesnar and Fedor on 10-3-2010 at a venue to be announced? I have not had computer access for 2 days but I would be surprised if I missed this.

are you just asking why there is a line?
they just put out prospective lines sometimes with an end date on them. So basically you can get in on the betting now and as long as it happens by Oct 3, 2010 your bet will count.

I actually handicapped the fight at something around -200 Fedor, so I think the line’s a pretty efficient one. Though if I absolutely had to take a side, I’d probably take Lesnar at +190.
