UFC World Conquest Watch: Big in Canada, Big Plans in Hawaii
BE reader Matt McEwen (also a great MMA writer for 411Mania.com) points us to a story in Canada's most prestigious newspaper, the Globe & Mail that breaks down just how big the sport is getting in Canada:
In Canada, a recent Ipsos-Reid poll found MMA to be the fastest growing of 30 sports in terms of popularity, with 22 per cent of Canadians claiming "avid" or "casual" interest. The NBA has 26-per-cent interest and Major League Baseball 38 per cent. The rate of growth of interest is higher for the UFC than for either hockey or the Olympics. Among Canadian men, 33 per cent of the 2,000 surveyed said they had some interest in UFC events.
The story also points out that even bigger things could happen in the future:
UFC vice-president Marc Ratner told The Globe and Mail this week that a live event at the Rogers Centre in Toronto would deliver a record gate for the company. However, MMA fighting is not formally regulated in either Ontario or B.C., and is banned as prize fighting under Sec. 83 of the federal Criminal Code. Exemption is made for amateur boxing and pro boxing events licensed under an athletics commission. Undeterred, UFC is lobbying for regulatory change, and planning to stage cards in Toronto and Vancouver next year.
The G&M also editorializes in favor of MMA being regulated in Ontario. That's the kind of major political cover -- a favorable editorial in the leading paper -- that lobbyists kill for. Thank you Globe & Mail.
And while we're talking about potential massive live UFC's, Dana White is now talking about putting on the biggest UFC in history (in terms of live crowd size) in Hawaii:
White did make one concession in his discussion of a potential outdoor-stadium event. Hawaii, which recently passed legislation which will allow the UFC to visit, will eventually host an event at the 50,000-seat Aloha Stadium.
"We will probably have to [hold an event in an outdoor stadium] in Hawaii," White said. "Here's the reason: We fixed the thing in Hawaii. We're going to go to Hawaii now. They had that crazy [expletive] tax thing going on. We fixed that.
"We're going to go to Hawaii, and the only place we can do it in Hawaii would be in the Aloha [Stadium] because all of the other venues are too small."
Here's another reason to root for B.J. Penn to beat Kenny Florian. Ok, for many of you, this will be the only reason to root for B.J. Penn.

"Prestigious"?
Hmm.

Big Plans
The UFC basically has a domino effect in front of itself. With Hawaii, they have the destination for B.J. vs. Diego Sanchez assuming B.J. beats Kenny for the Lightweight title. With Massachusetts, they have the Kenny vs. Diego fight if Kenny beats B.J., and with Toronto they would have GSP vs. A. Silva for the pound for pound best fighter in the world. Two of these three will happen in 2010.

I dont think GSP will have his chances... against the SPIDER SILVA
so i dont want to see him getting destroyed.
But I rather watch him fight against winner of Martin “The Hitman” Kampman vs Mike “Quick” Swick
after that then GSP vs. A. Silva.
Anderson Silva should fight against top 205 contenders like Quinton Jackson or Luiz Cane. How about Wanderlei Silva or Demian Maia or even Vitor Belfort for middleweight title?
*UFC got it down for sure, UFC !NV@$iON

I’m sure they would sell every damn seat too.
Hawaiians are so desperate for live entertainment they will sell out anything as long as its from the mainland. A while ago Journey sold out Aloha 4 nights running.

Actually...
The sell outs have more to do with the aforementioned lack of large venues. Never underestimate the power of corporate rock when a band has a Filipino lead singer. Hawai’i’s large Filipino population coupled with a large cohort of individuals that grew up during the 80’s is an unstoppable revenue generating machine in the islands.

I’m also willing to bet that Montreal hates baseball/loves MMA more than the rest of Canada given that whole Expos leaving/GSP thing.

Recent stats given to me from StubHub..
…say 17% of ticket sales came from BC and Alberta on UFC 100.
Historically, Ontario is traditionally the #3 state/province for all ticket sales (7%) in North America, with California at #1 (16%).
Quebec, BC and Alberta are usually in or near the top ten.
PS: Montreal doesn’t hate baseball. They just hated the douchebag that owned the ’Xpos and refused to give him a hint of a profit.

The Bodog Fight Costa Rica tournament is a classic example of how that can play out badly.

Thanks for the kind words Nate.
I think you hit the nail on the head when you said a lobbyist would kill for that kind of editorial. The “it’s ridiculous that they don’t regulate it” attitude expressed could very well go a long way to adding to the straw on the camel’s back.
I’ll stick with the notion that it would be like the New York Times coming out and saying it’s flat out ridiculous that the legislature hasn’t regulated MMA there yet. It really is a big deal.

As someone from Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, I can safely say that people here LOVE this sport, women, men, I’ve seen fans from all age groups up to 67 years old!
It is here to stay and the first show in Vancouver will be a SELLOUT cannot emphasis this enough, it will be HUGE.
People in Vancouver go absolutely crazy for pretty much any event(guns and roses concert, the occasional playoff failure from the canucks), the olympics coming up in 2010, would just be really stupid for the UFC to try to not garner their attention to alleviate the legal roadblocks in time to hit huge on the olympic fanfare as well as the UFC fanfare combined.
It could change the sport to have a GSP headlined card in Vancouver at GM Place 6 months before the Olympics when their marketing machine is in full swing.
I just hope the UFC acts now rather than later, because you cannot please the west coast of Canada forever with great treatment of the east coast.

Mark Ratner?
I’m sorry, but If it ain’t from Dana’s mouth or the Fertittas then it don’t mean shit to me. Just my drunken honest opinion.

I don’t know about prestigious, but for sure, the Globe and Mail is pretty much the top paper in Canada. This kind of exposure will definitely help. I think when it comes to regulating MMA, the big one is the Ontario market. Once that goes through, then the rest will follow, especially out here in Vancouver. One thing that Vancouver absolutely cannot stand is Toronto getting something we can’t. There are many reasons why the West Coast feels insecure, mostly due to regional politics that play out every national election, but in my humble opinion, I’m sure Vancouver will follow once it gets regulated out there.
I suppose Vancouver could try to be ahead of the curve and regulate first, but that might be asking too much from a city run by its Happy Planet mayor who’s primary concern seems to be “greening” the city (which I have no problem with. I just want MMA regulated, dammit!)
