Mike Swick and Mike Thomas Brown Defend Honor of MMA From Interloper Brock Lesnar

Brock-lesnar-rena-mero-00-380x247_mediumMike Swick talking to Steve Cofield (transcript via Fight Opinion):

Everyone I know obviously we’ve talked to after the fight you know hates him. Like you said they want to see him fight again. He does have the ‘it factor’ for sure. I mean everybody wants to see him fight again. I’d like to see him fight Cain my teammate you know or Shane Carwin or some of these other guys because I don’t think he’s technically a top fighter...

I mean he’s going to sell PPVs and he’s going to a big draw but I just hope you know the newer breed of fighters coming up don’t look at him and try to be like that. I mean we’re not WWE. You know, we’re a different organization. The two big differences between us and WWE are the facts that you know we are real. I give them respect for the acting and for the athleticism. They’re very talented guys for sure, but it is a big difference what they do and what we do. We go in there and we fight and people get hurt. You put everything on the line in the Octagon and it’s real and on top of that, another great difference between us and them is that the amount of respect we have. We respect each other, we’re always showing respect to each other, there’s always a little bit of talk here and there to build up a fight but at the end of the day when the fight’s over you know we respect each other and we respect the sport, we respect the fans.

Mike Thomas Brown on Inside MMA:

"Normal sports fans, or MMA fans, I don't think they're into type of thing. But the pro wrestling fans, that's what they're into. I've never been a pro wrestling fan, but I could imagine, I know there's a lot of them, how they got really into that. They love the heel, the bad guy, the jerk who talks a lot of smack. So maybe it'll attract some hillbilly fans."

I'm torn here. I sympathize with Swick and Brown as fighters who have invested years in building the sport of MMA only to see someone like Brock Lesnar come along and step into the limelight and then change things for the worse. But at the same time, that's what happens when you build something and it blows up into mass popularity. There's no way to be a "mainstream sport" (or even a near mainstream sport like MMA is today) and not have certain elements of the fans that are lowest common denominator.

But of course, Lesnar's not the first. In fact, ironically enough Swick decries the antics of his The Ultimate Fighter Season 1 cast mate Chris Leben as something that was bad for the sport in the long run. Personally, I was among those rolling my eyes at the new crew of "reality show" fighters at the time. I was wrong about that and fighters like Mike Swick, Forrest Griffin, Rashad Evans and Diego Sanchez have proven again and again that they and the reality show were a net positive for the sport.

There's just no way to get the famous Forrests without giving a platform to the Junie Brownings too. I think in the long run, MMA will survive Brock Lesnar's antics and many of the "hillbilly" fans he has brought along with him will come to appreciate the sport and not just the spectacle.

Yep, my sentiments exactly. Like how fighters discredit him saying he got a shot too fast, but he destroyed Couture. If someone could destroy GSP I think he should immediately get a title shot, same with all the champions. Oh well, until otherwise notified, I’m on the Brock Smash Hype Train.

To be fair

Couture is an small, old man who hadn’t fought in a long time. GSP isn’t.

Oh please, Couture was running off to fight Fedor at the time, no one was calling him a small old man for that fight. And if Brock beats Fedor, is it just going to be because he’s small?

And “to be fair” that small, old man did a hell of alot better than Mir.

He got up pretty quickly from the takedowns, and he was making Lesnar work. I don’t see how getting bashed with one punch suddenly makes Randy’s performance absolute shit. He was doing decent up until he was knocked silly.

This is true

However, it doesn’t help explain Couture’s success wrestling with Brock. Granted, Mir isn’t a wrestler, but looking at it separate of that; Couture was doing very well wrestling Brock for such a broken down old race horse.

Exactly, it sets up the possiblity of attracting so many fans. Fighters should be a bit more understanding because it will essentially vault the UFC into the mainstream eventually.

You can’t keep a sport down that is just growing to a monsterous size because Lesnar said he’d mount his wife and flipped the bird on PAY PER VIEW. It wasn’t like it was on national television for one, and two… mainstream media doesn’t want that many fans coming to their website and reading coverage? No wonder they are dying off.

Indirectly, fighters are going to feel more money in their pocket. Let the UFC do what it does best, market this.

Clearly nobody cares because nobody has been complaining. I mean, it’s not like that totally overshadowed Brock’s becoming the unified heavyweight champ or anything.

Ahem.

Who’s complaining? Mainstream media and some MMA writers. Most fans don’t care. I had buddies over during the event who were straight casual fans who thought the antics were funny. A lot of hardcores want to see him go down, but they’ll tune in to see if that’ll happen.

I’m a bit confused at your point.

The “Nobody cares” phrase goes along with Brock’s antics. I suppose NOBODY is strong if we consider the people who are complaining, but those people… the UFC doesn’t care what they think. Revenues are going to rise because of the antics regardless.

As for your friends, do they give a shit about Brock’s antics? Do they think it hurts the sport and it’ll cause mainstream media to exit stage right? Do they care about any of that?

Or do they simply want to see Lesnar get bashed in or vice versa?

Yeah, exactly. People – the kind who aren’t on websites talking about this crap, but still buy PPVs – said that they were disgusted when he got in Mir’s face. I think a lot of non-hardcore fans are only willing to accept the more brutal aspects of MMA because of things like the respect between the fighters.

That’s a HUGE selling point for mainstream audiences: that these guys aren’t bloodthirsty killing machines, but respectful martial artists and real athletes.

I don’t think the CURRENT fans care because they are already sucked into MMA.

But as you pointed out, mainstream audiences… yes, I suppose I would agree with that point. They probably aren’t going to be appealed to bloodthirsty killing machines. I think fans already sucked into this sport see the disrespect and think “God damn, I hate Brock Lesnar” and they’ll tune in to hope he gets crushed by someone.

Look, surveying your friends isn’t worldly. A lot of my friends are the same types and they were thrilled with his behavior. It was funny and not everyone is so concerned with the antics of those they aren’t personally associated with. They aren’t ardently defending the sport like we are. The irony is that we’re the ones still bantering about it and they’re watching baseball games and working. We’re angry about how the world views this because from the inside it looks potentially disastrous, but we’re still ordering the shows. Casual fans don’t give a shit enough about MMA to still be talking about Brock insulting sponsors six days ago. They’re on to the next thing, just like we will be in a matter of days/weeks. It’s really a non-argument in my mind.

I understand that, but our view of being angry that it makes the sport look bad is going to be profoundly veto’d by the bigger casual fanbase that doesn’t care.

I would love to see MMA be more professional, and I think the way it can happen in this case is how Dana White is handling it by saying it was a huge mistake by Brock.

Honestly, a lot of fans don’t seem to care about the antics, but that probably means they aren’t opposed to seeing a more professional attitude either. More professionalism is the way to go.

Insulting sponsors, however, is a point that I’m very adamant on saying that it’s a NO-NO. He should have NEVER done that.

And he never will again

So that’s out of the way in my mind.

I’ve said in discussions regarding Lesnar’s post fight tirade that I don’t want guys to get wrangled into some formality laden post-fight bullshit. Some guys are going to say things we don’t like and maybe we’ll think they’re giant dicks for it, but I’ll defend their right to say it. People are having a fit over Lesnar’s comments because he’s in the spotlight. But none of those same people were calling on Lesnar to be the PR rep and torch bearer for the UFC/MMA’s public perception. Did that responsibility fall to him somehow? I don’t think so. Part of the reason I love MMA is the unpredictability of the fights and the fighters. I don’t remember a similar outburst when Nick Diaz was throwing shoes at people and starting fights in hospitals, because he wasn’t a former pro wrestler. I think that whole line of bullshit needs to go away. Lesnar can’t speak freely because he used to be a pro wrestler. There is no sense in that; the dude couldn’t work a mic for his life back then. This is his personality, before and after his days in the WWF/WWE. Lawlor brought more pro wrestling to UFC 100 than Lesnar did, but there are obvious reasons no one’s telling him to back to the wrestling ring.

If Brock Donkey Kong’s Carwin and thanks his mom afterwards, then I’ll be pissed.

This is hardly new to MMA. We have seen Tank Abbott, Tito and others play all sorts of games.

Anyone remember Tito’s antics after his Belfort bout? He called out Chuck and Ken Shamrock, making a very big spectacle.

Tito’s grave-digging, gun-shooting post fight routine was just as bad. And Tito has, i the past two years, accused two sep opponents of cheating. Is that what Swick means by respecting your opponent after the fight?

Swick’s buddy Josh Koscheck, after beating Jon Goulet, ran around making a belt geasture around his waist as well as doing the crotch chop (straight from pro-wrestling) while his opponent was still down. Is that any better?

I have no problem with guys saying they don’t like that kind of stuff, but don’t act as though Brock was the first to do it.

Are they trying to say that Pro Wrestlers have no respect for each other? Of course they do, they are on the road together and are basically on big family. So saying MMA fighters have tons of respect for each other (while true) is just irrelevant.

While I certainly see how some would be offended at Lesnar's rant

after the Mir fight, the end result is nothing but a positive for the UFC & MMA in general. More mainstream coverage, more people talking about “hey did you see Brock Lesnar on Saturday”? He does need to lay off the sponsor bashing for sure, but other than that what exactly did he say or do that we have not seen tons of other fighters do in our sport? Tito, Shamrock, the Diaz brothers all have done this exact same thing. IMO, every sport needs a decent mix of fighters whom people love because of their character & also those that people love to hate. This ensures that the casual fan will watch just to see that jerk Lesnar fight where as they would not normally watch. The hillbilly fan comment by Brown is way ridiculous & really shows his intelligence about what our sport needs, which is more mainstream coverage.

But I just don’t see it happening on a large scale. I think MMA especially will have a large audience that wants to see “the car crash aspect” at least for a while. Until it is no longer a novelty to them at least.

I know anecdotal evidence is frowned upon but… I would call myself a football fan. Do I understand the intricacies of the game? Hell no. I don’t know a nickle from a dime (thank you Madden 1997) but I love watching an exciting touchdown pass or watching a QB get flattened by an especially large and excited man. I don’t know if you can draw any conclusions from that (probably not) but I thought I’d toss that in there.

I understand what you're saying

There is a difference between football fans who want to see an exciting touchdown pass or a hard tackle, and the fan who wants to see someone get crippled on the field.

I think most football fans who want to see a great tackle will actual feel bad for a guy when he doesn’t stand up afterwards. And I like those fans.

The same goes for MMA, imo. For example – Hendersons knock out of Bisping was awesome (like a great tackle). The shot after was cheap and should be discouraged (like kicking the tackled guy who can’t get up). The people who loved the shot afterwards are fans of violence, not the sport. And I think there lies the difference.

("you don’t like Brock" – helping Weobo out)

I think you’re spot on with the analogy.

Hmm...

I wasn’t even taking into consideration the people who watch football (to keep with the analogy here) to watch someone get crippled on the field.

I was trying to paint a picture of fans who really don’t care about the intricacies of the game (reading plays = understanding ground tactics in MMA) and the people who are just there to see an exciting play (a 20 yard pass that leads to a 60 yard touchdown = a great knockout in MMA).

I’m not sure if I just didn’t explain my analogy well enough or if you were just trying to introduce a new perspective with your own analogy… lol

It’ll happen because the hype is getting ridiculous. More viewers, mainstream can’t avoid the huge number of fans the UFC will attract.

I feel that this sort of attitude is dually offending the hundreds of other fighters making a name and living in the sport. My opinion is that anyone that is offended by Lesnar says “Lesnar is an asshole” and not “holy shit, all mixed martial artists are assholes”. People don’t see Milton Bradley throw a chair at a fan and say “baseball players are violent beasts!”. It’s a silly way of looking things, honestly.

I can’t help but think alot of the fighters who are grumbling over the Brock thing are more upset about Brock’s paycheck and status, rather than what comes out of his mouth. Piss and moan all you want girlies, Brock is here to stay.

And am I the only one that cannot stand Mike Swick’s take on MMA fighters talking smack but being cool in the end? Is he oblivious to the fact that maybe some people just don’t play that “Hype the fight” game, and take shit personally? Ugh.

How about just asking if anyone can stand Mike Swick, period. I can’t. Just my opinion.

I almost just left it at that to be honest, because I always have this shitty taste in my mouth every time he gets done fighting. Can’t stand him. I think it’s the fish lips and old douchebag sideburns he had.

I can understand being upset, but...

Let’s be honest. There is a very small contingent of MMA fans who care about the respect and the technique. The other 98% just want to see someone get knocked the fuck out.

98% of fans are the Just Bleed guy? Really? Huh.

And you got this number from?

Cause I know for a fact that the justBleed guy ended up enjoying ground game & submissions few years later.

I changed it for “justbreak” after the Mir sylvia fight.

by spectaa on Jul 17, 2009 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Honestly

I think that kind of proves my point. He changed it from “Just Bleed” to “Just Break” so… instead of wanting to see someone bleed he wanted to see someone’s bones break? I don’t know if that is an indication he wanted to see technique…

You brought him up as a way to make a point. I was just challenging the point you were attempting to make.

TRUE

I brought him up cause if he is the basic UFC fan that only enjoyed a good KO, if he sticked around, he probably ended up enjoying ground game and submission at least a little bit. You can’t be a long time fan and JUST enjoy KOs I don’t believe it, that’s why I can justify getting as much fans as possible with lame WWE acts from times to times. But I may be delusional.

Well, that’s is my point. Justbreak was irony (I still think it was a good one :p).

by spectaa on Jul 17, 2009 12:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with you! (To a certain degree...)

Let’s be honest. I don’t know where you saw the fight, but I went to a bar with a group of about 50 people (yes 50) and the place was PACKED. I go to this bar ALL the time to watch fights and it was beyond packed it was what I imagine life as a sardine is like. When Lesnar threw up the middle fingers and gave his Coors Light speech the bar erupted! People were cheering and laughing and booing, but I guarantee they will ALL come back to see what else is going to happen in the saga of Brock Lesnar.

But I don’t think you can say “he probably ended up enjoying ground game and submission at least a little bit” because we just don’t know. At this point that is just pure speculation.

My 2 cents… okay, it’s more like $1.35 but you know.. :)

I saw it on the yahoo stream (30€), I can watch it on TV but 3 or 7 days later. I only know hardcore fans, cause in my country everyone and his mother is a soccer fan, if you know about MMA it’s no coincidence. I know a casual guy that bought the game, I played with him and he couldn’t stand the ground game and stopped playing :p. I guess that’s the most casual guy I know, but I would never call him a fan. All the other fans I know are educated about the sport, but they are for the most of them either hardcore martial arts fans, training MMA, or longtime MMA fans. But I know I’m not in a common situation. It still make it hard for me to believe your statement, but you’re anecdote speaks for itself.

by spectaa on Jul 17, 2009 1:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I enjoy

a healthy dose of knock outs as much as the next guy, but I like to see a good ground game as well.

by proflex on Jul 17, 2009 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Me too

And obviously the “98%” was hyperbole, but I do believe there is a greater portion of fight fans that aren’t interested in the technique involved with the ground game or the respect between fighters. I mean, the pop in a room full of spectators when there some sick juijitsu going on and a potential knock out is pretty obvious.

To me at least.

I know where this is going, more exposure, mainstream blabla. Great stuff. But Brock asked for it, so why the surprise? He wants to be the bad guy, and by doing so he gave those guys the opportunity to be heroes.Nothing unexpected here.

If memory serves correct

didn’t The Rock back in the day refer to all WWE fans as hillbillies and trailer trash, followed up by the worst finishing move in the history of pretend fighting? Maybe Swick is also hoping to cash in on the heel status combined with limited skill.

by rzor on Jul 17, 2009 11:34 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Mike Swick is a little high on himself

Oh my god, Lesnar didn’t respect Mir, I don’t respect Mir and would have done the same damned thing, this is not the first time we’ve seen two fighters have no respect for eachother, and it won’t be the last, so what. As for his assumption of Lesnar not being top notch in technique, I dare him to name ONE, just one fighter with the wrestling technique of Lesnar, and he’s a champion, So the man doesn’t have a BJJ pedigree, or is not a top notch striker from a former boxing background. How many fighter who have 5 fights under his belt is a complete techinical fighter, I’d go out on a limb and say none. Again Brock is a champion, not something Swick can say or may ever be able to say in his lifetime as a fighter. No offense Swick, but I seriously doubt anyone really cares what you think about Lesnar.

if the sport was filled with all swicks and no dicks what fun would that be? every sport needs a guy who stands alone from the pack.

We are all missing something here.......

Swick’s and Brown’s comments seem to have done a nice job getting us to talk about Swick and Brown amidst all the talk of Lesnar and his hillbilly WWE antics. It is a case of bad press being better than no press. I can’t wait to see how Jose Aldo does against Brown’s strength and wrestling in their upcoming title fight. I also am getting kind of juicy about a Swick vs Kampman fight. Also, has anyone heard from Carlos Condit. Maybe he should talk some shit about Lesnar too.

Absolutely Sickening

Mike Swick, go change your Kotex Pad,… and Mike Thom-ass, excuse me sir, Do We Know You? The ONLY reason these 2 wanna be’s are boo-hooing is because of what Brock is being payed and the Limelight. You two Girl Scouts wana make the big time? Then for GAWD Sakes stop kissing your opponents azzez before and after a fight! This isnt kisseyface corner, stop trying to make the public think your perfect Gentlemen and act like men and fight! This is a sport for Fighters, Warriors, Bullies, and men that want to show just how Badd Azz they are! It;s not like hey can I buy you a Coke after the fight? I punched you in the face can we kiss now and make up?
I have advice for you Swick and Thom-Ass, you wanna be stars? you wanna be the badd asses, then act like it! If an Entertaining fighter doesnt put fans in the seats, then hes usless, oh you dont have to believe me, just look at the long list of who’s come and gone, now do me a favor,….. NAME EM!……. Do you get the point???
Who cares what you think this sport should be, it’s up to the PAYING FANS, and as a paying fan, guess what? I would buy a Brock Lesnar pay per view any day of the week, but you two ladies better get with the Program, or find jobs at Wal-Mart in the Toy Section Under Ass- Clowns!
