Should Fedor Emelianenko vs Brock Lesnar Happen and If So, How?
Sergio Non gets provocative:
Can someone explain to me why a deal with the Ultimate Fighting Championship should mean anything to Fedor Emelianenko?
...
But why should Emelianenko care about what we want? He already has an eight-year record of accomplishment. He has money. He has independence. He can afford to turn down anything that doesn't meet his own terms.
Jake Rossen reader "Jonathan F." thinks he's cut the Gordian Knot:
The main wrinkle: that the UFC wants Emelianenko, like all of its fighters, to remain tied to the company for as long as he holds a title. In other words, if Emelianenko signs a four-fight deal with the promotion, and is champion after the fourth fight, he is not free to compete elsewhere; he must remain with the UFC until losing his belt.
The iron, according to Jonathan: the "shotgun clause," a passage that would allow Emelianenko to make a bid to buy out the remainder of his contract. "The UFC then has the option of allowing Fedor to buy out his contract, or of paying Fedor an amount equal to the bid amount to stay," Jonathan writes. "For example, he can offer the UFC $100 to buy himself out of his contract. The UFC can then accept his $100 buyout, in which case Fedor is free, or they can pay him $100 to stay."
Personally I'm a hope springs eternal kind of guy (aka a total and utter mark). I agree with Sergio that there's no reason for Fedor to take a deal he doesn't like with the UFC. He's got no emotional connection with the U.S. market. He could retire today and be a first ballot Hall of Famer, if not the best of all-time. But I hope Jake's reader is right or at least on the right path. Let's make it happen!
Of course, Josh Barnett may very well play spoiler in all this by beating Fedor at Affliction: Trilogy on August 1. In that case, problem solved. Dana White has already said he'd bring Josh back to the UFC if he can beat Fedor. So we might not get to see Brock vs Fedor, but we would get to see Brock vs the man who beat Fedor. I'm a huge Josh Barnett fan, but I won't be holding my breath.

Just remembered how Randy vs Fedor was all the buzz. Then Randy lost…
So Dana really said if Barnett wins he’ll bring him back? Hmmmm, never heard that before. I love me some Fee-uh-door but it’s like he just wants too much. Lets see, he signed a 3 fight deal with Affliction and only competed in 1 Sambo Tourney and no other MMA promotion since. Why won’t he sign with UFC again? If Dana lets him compete in the Sambo tourneys will all be better for him? Stick a dumb M-1 Global sticker on the octagon and let them get a cut of Fedors $$$ so they can be happy already. Promise him that UFC will be in Japan next year.
But, can Dana make Logan have sex with Fedor is the tricky part…
GSP: I pulled my groin.
Greg Jackson: I don't care Georges! HIT HIM WITH YOUR GROIN!
he did say that about barnett...
… but also said something similar to this more recently:
“people are pestering me to sign fedor, no one’s beating down my door to sign josh barnett”.
wish i could find the actual quote.
Cool
But lets say he actually does knock off Fedor. People are gonna be asking him to sign Josh.

Nah. If Josh beats Fedor, it doesn’t mean he’s suddenly marketable—though for Dana, it would represent an opportunity to make Brock undisputed, which is marketable.

undisuputed? That’s right! That’d unite the WAMMA and UFC titles! I wonder if the UFC would even allow Fedor or Barnett to bring that into the building if they signed with UFC after their fight.
It would be hilarious if Barnett suddenly had his own complex demands.
“I’m going to need to be able to participate in yearly NJPW matches. Shayna Bazler and Megumi Fuji must be offered UFC contracts. I’m going to need to be allowed to have cameos in strange Japanese video games.”
It ends in an armbar or a strangle regardless.
There’s two things there UFC won’t do: they won’t co-promote with M-1 Global (or anyone else) and they won’t give Fedor the freedom to do Sambo.
First – UFC has nothing to gain from co-promoting with M-1 Global. They’re the big dogs in the sport and just getting Fedor will not be reason enough to give a small player like M-1 tons of free publicity.
Second – UFC fighters get injured often enough in the Octagon and in training. Having Fedor or anyone else do Sambo on the side will increase the injury risk and give Joe Silva even more headaches than he already has.

this is old news..
Lorenzo already said he’d allow sambo as long as it isn’t close to the scheduled fight..
The facts are the facts. We made him the best offer out there, more money than anybody offered him –- so you can’t say it’s about the money. Then they come back and they say, “Well, it’s a one-sided contract.” Let’s break this down from a logical standpoint. We offered the exact same contract that three hundred other guys have signed, including Brock Lesnar, Chuck Liddell, Anderson Silva, GSP, all the top stars. Why is that contract not good enough for Fedor? What Fedor wants is this. He doesn’t want to be exclusive. So, it’s like saying, okay, Tom Brady: “I’m going to play for New England Patriots one Sunday, but you know what? After that game’s over, I want to be a free agent and go see where I can play for the rest of the season.” Every weekend he’s going to skip around and play for whoever he wants. How does that make sense for us as a business or for the fans? He needs to come into our fold if he wants to cement his legacy as the best fighter in the world. We can figure something out with the sambo thing… (but) at the end of the day, I think we need to have a situation where at least 90 or 120 days before he’s signed a contract to fight, he shouldn’t be out there competing in events like that because I don’t want to take the chance of him getting hurt. But all of this stuff with Fedor: we want Fedor. As soon as he gets done with this show that he’s doing, he can come –- we’ve never met Fedor. I want to sit down. I want to talk to him and that’s part of the problem. We’ve never even met the guy. But it is a shame that he has not come forward to challenge the best guys in the world and I hope he comes. We want him.
[Sambo is] a big excuse for Fedor to say he’s not coming to the UFC, and quite honestly, I don’t think it’s Fedor. I think Fedor wants to compete. The issue has been his management. They’ve completely kept him aside. I’m not sure he even knows what we offered him, to be honest with you. I think if he knew what we offered, he would have been here a long time ago. There’s been a little bit of disconnect there… we want to meet him in person. We will not sit down and negotiate until me and Dana meet him in person. And if at that time he decides to not be a part of what we’re doing, then we know.

Joe Stevenson just participated in GrapplersQuest
At the UFC expo no less.
It ends in an armbar or a strangle regardless.
Monte Cox had no problem with Sambo and gave Fedor a signing bonus, he still couldn’t get the deal done. Sambo may be one of the sticking points, but it’s nowhere near the top of the list.
Josh Barnett says:
“I read that Dana says they’ll get Fedor and make Fedor vs. Brock and it’ll be great. Better get a new plan after Aug 1st.”

The UFC might not mean anything to Fedor right now, but it might in the future. Yes, he has money, yes he has a great record, but what if he wants to still fight or he wants more money? What if the Fink wants more money from his cash cow?
Retiring is always an option, but not many people retire on top and can stay out. The time may be coming where the only feasible place for Fedor to fight is in the Octagon, and if that time comes, Fedor is going to have to give up something. he’ll either give up his desire to fight, or give up the things that have and are preventing him from signing right now.
There are enough workable HW’s outside of the UFC, and enough organizations willing to work around M-1, to keep him busy and well paid for the foreseeable future.
It ends in an armbar or a strangle regardless.
What orgs?
Everyone says this, but it’s really only Affliction. What if they go away? Strikeforce isn’t going to throw that money at him. Everyone acts like there’s tons of places in Japan, but he hasn’t fought there since the end of 2007. His fights have been so spread out that I think he would have/could have taken a fight there if the offer was good enough.
If Affliction goes it’s very possible that the UFC will be the only org that is able to keep him as well paid as he wants to be.
It can't go both ways,
Either he wants just money, in which case he should/will be in the UFC, or M-1 has a complex set of promotional demands, in which case he will fight for various levels of money and copromotion.
At the simplest of levels, M-1 can promote one-off shows that do little other than main event Fedor, set up possible next contenders, and push Red Devil fighters.
It ends in an armbar or a strangle regardless.
The promotional demands come down to M-1 making money. If Affliction dies, the cash cow will be gone. They need to find someone to promote the shows for them to make money. There is a 0% shot of Fedor fighting on an M-1 challenge card, it’s a waste of his talent for the amount of money they are going to make.
And that is my point. They are running out of people to co-promote with. If no one is able to give M-1 what they want, the UFC offer will look better and better.
Fedor will never sign with the UFC
as long as M-1 Global still exists. Fink will use Fedor’s name to build his organization. I don’t blame him, but let’s be real here: the reason Fedor will never fight in the UFC clearly falls with Fedor and his management.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111111111111

Maybe Fedor would be willing to sign up for a “grappling” match with Brock like he did with Aoki.

No, because there is the strong possibility that he would lose.

Yes, it should happen. And it should happen as the first of a multifight contract signed by Fedor, having recently wised up and told his many leeches to find a new host. It should happen in an Octagon, and Fedor should be given Eddie Sanchez first just because of nostalgia.

I've contradicted myself
I have no problem with giving Fedor an immediate title shot, but I don’t want people crying ‘Octagon jitters’ if he loses, so I’d like to give him a can first just so he can get used to the cage.

forget Courture
Give him someone like Carwin, or gonzaga, or if you want to give him a can, give him Herring and finish off that guys damned contract and send him packing already.
Pretty sure Fedor is more interested in veterans of the sport who have some kind of amiable ranking rather than flavor of the month fighters that are taking over divisions due to lack of competition.
I’m sure he was debating between David PeeWee Herman, Josh Barnett and Brock Lesnar, but he definitely picked the right one.
Wait. Who’s the flavor of the month fighter?

It would be awesome if the UFC signed Barnett either way. Barnett and Brock would engage in some epic smack talk.

I've got a theory
of why Fedor isn’t in the UFC, maybe he’s scared of fighting the worlds best fighters. We all know that the UFC has been the leading promoter in getting the best of the best, but for some reason, Fedor, despite being given the title of worlds best whilst not fighting in the best organization out there, still hasn’t had the testicular fortitude to jump on board and find out where he really stands. Could this whole crap with the WAMMA gone to his managements head and they are cuddling their golden goose? Is it possible, could Fedor be scared? Just a thought and a different way to view the whole mess.
Some might counter-argue
the time he spent in Pride was against the best of that time, and really only the recent period has been against lesser competition. His fights against Silvia and Arlovsky were only exposed as possible cans after his victories. As former UFC champions, they were considered reasonable competition leading up to those fights.
This is hardly the first time I’ve seen this theory. It hasn’t gotten any more credible since last time.
wasn't looking for
credibility, just didn’t see this particular arguement and thought it might have some validity, also, I’m still relativly new to the boards and didn’t know it if this train of thought had been brought up yet. Really meant this to be more of a joke more then anything.
Vadim Finkelstein

The entire reason Fedro is not in the UFC and has never even met with anyone.
A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.
