Strikeforce's Scott Coker Talks Women's MMA Tournaments and is Gina Carano Going to Make Weight?
Ariel Helwani interviews Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker after the big press conference for August 15th's Gina Carano vs Christiane "Cyborg" Santos yesterday in NYC. The biggest thing in the video that I hadn't heard before were Coker's plans for holding women's tournaments in both the 145 and 135lb divisions.
Tournaments are the perfect way to build a new wave of stars in women's MMA and build up heat for the first challenger to the champion they'll crown on August 15. I'm very happy to see Coker thinking along those lines.
Meanwhile, Fightlinker has concerns about superstar Gina Carano making weight:
I hate to be the guy who's harassing a chick about her weight, but this is a fucking fight sport, people. If you show up for your big presser in New York looking only slightly more in shape than Scott Coker, then I'm gonna mention it. As a fan of women's MMA, I'm starting to get very nervous. Keep in mind she was already flubbing her weigh ins back when she was a stick.
She can do whatever the fuck she wants as far as training and fitness goes, and I don't care how big her cankles are so long as she makes weight for her August 15th fight. Ya know, the first women's MMA superfight? It's also a title fight or some junk too. So making weight is slightly integral to not making WMMA as a whole look fucking stupid. Like drooling retard wearing a helmet and playing with dog butts stupid.

Doesn't Cyborg
have trouble making weight as well? At least she did in her last fight.
Arguing on the internet is like being in the special olympics, even when you win you are still retarded.
It is a legit concern to think both of these ladies might have trouble making weight, but from the photos I have seen of Carano, she looks out of shape and like she wouldn’t make and contracted weight. She is underestimating her opponent, the scale.
I have not seen pics of her recently,
but I really cannot tell the difference in her pics from when she did & did not make weight, just like with Cyborg. I think this is a problem both of these women have, but this guy is just taking a shot at Carano because she is the bigger name.

Take a look at the the article from the press conference Nick posted a bunch of pics.

Even in the picture above, she doesn’t look toned. Cyborg is just a bigger more muscular girl. Her excuse for missing weight was “lady problems” i.e. a water wieght problem from lady issues or from not cutting enough or cut timing. Gina’s excuse, THE SECOND TIME SHE MISSED, was she was busy filming American Gladiators and couldn’t train right. Its a training issue vs. a cutting issue. I think Gina lacks the discipline to be a fighter, but has a tremendous amount of talent. She deserved the extra criticism for not only missing weight twice, but by a very wide margin compared to cyborg. With her training history the focus is on her to make weight. She needs to prove that she is taking it seriously.
Not really...
this guy is just taking a shot at Carano because she is the bigger name.
Fightlinker pays more attention to women’s MMA than likely any other MMA site out there. It has more to do with reality than Gina’s high profile.

Ahhhh
She was in the city and I didn’t know about it? Sigh.
But yea seriously. Gina – don’t make WMMA look like a joke.
So.....
The title fight is officially at 145?

I've really been thinking about this
Maybe they just need special weight divisions for women. I mean, maybe Gina and Cyborg need to be in a 155lbs division? Or does having special weight divisions for women just kick it in the proverbial tit in terms of legitimacy?
Btw… that really, really hurts. :(

OR…
She could manage her weight a bit better and fit in workout routines during her mega-press obligations. I have a feeling she doesn’t fit much in at all. If she’s working so hard, that weight should come off to an extent in which she can cut down to 145, she’s done it in the past.

Speaking of which..
Why doesn’t MMA consider the size of some of these woman’s breasts. I read in Playboy that one DD size breast averages like 6 or 7lbs. Gina’s boobs gotta be DD’s from the looks of it. I think thats a pretty big disadvantage when making weight…she can’t help she’s got nice big boobs.
by ultimoshogun on Jul 16, 2009 6:31 PM EDT up reply actions
To which I say bullshit. Maybe a pair is 6-7 lbs. Also I don’t think her boobs a DD. I can’t help that I have an 80 lbs. head, I still can make a weight.
Maybe it was a pair…..still a disadvantage compared to a chick with lil boobs.

Two fighters notorious for having problems making weight… Carano’s already failed to make weight twice (vs. Kobold and Young). Of course, both of those fights were signed for 140lbs. Then we have Ms. Santos and her lead bikinis…
Regardless of who wins and who loses, if either of them does not make weight, it will be a huge blow to the credibility of women’s MMA.

I think she missed vs. Evinger also. that was a fight at 140 and Carano came in at 141.6 or something. Evinger was unaware that at a catch weight you got a 1 pound grace (and you shouldn’t get a grace at catch weight). She was still .6 over and I think she had to drop clothing? but I don’t remember
she made weight for evinger…. although she looked horrible… 140 is just too light for her.

No, she didn’t. Also I found a previous missed weight
-Gina Carano (141 1/2 lbs.) vs. Julie Kedzie (139 lbs.)*
Looking to see what she weighed in at for her other fights, but
Gina Carano- 150 vs Elaina Maxwell- 151
Did she have this problem when she did muay thai? That really don’t have high weights in Thailand.
I know she missed weight against Rosi Sexton. I believe it was supposed to be at 135 which Rosi was going up to make and wasn’t even that heavy at the weigh in. I believe Gina weighed like 139, but I can’t say for sure this is all completely accurate. However, I am sure that Gina missed weight for this fight.

I was looking everywhere for a record of that weigh in because I know sexton is small. Thanks for the info.
Rosi Sexton recounts the weigh in problems a bit in this interview. I think this is where I got the 139 figure.

she did make weight… they gave her .1 for the bikini… i was at the weigh ins.

That reminds me… Back in those days, EliteXC set up a 140lbs weight class for Carano specifically (unified rules have 135 and 145 for women) and she still had trouble making weight. I’ve always wondered why she insisted on that 140, especially given her problems of making that.
It’s sad. The biggest women’s fight on US market and I can’t root for either of them – not for Carano because she does not give enough of a damn to make weight and not for Cyborg for that stunt she pulled on Akano. Pathetic, ladies, pathetic.

At least if that pic is any indication. The first Strikeforce women’s title and it may end up being a joke. I hope I’m wrong.

She’s got one hell of a weight cut ahead of her. That is, if she plans to make weight to begin with.

Do they have enough Television time to build up 5 to 6 men’s divisions and 2 to 3 women’s divisions?
And she does look chunky. I just don’t think she takes the sport seriously enough.
she’ll have to take it pretty serious if she actually does get into the cage with Cyborg. I expect Cyborg to come very ready.
I have to really wonder who is managing/training Carano, I mean this close to the fight she should be in a lot better fight-ready shape IMO. But then I wondered that all the other times she failed to make weight so I can’t help but think managers/trainers aren’t taking women’s MMA seriously either.
I’ll be so disappointed if she fails yet again.
Carano has never, at any time in her career, weighed in at more than 145 pounds.
She’ll be fine now that she is in the proper weight class.
they were contracted to fight at 150 for that fight
his point was that for any other fight where the contracted weight was 140 or below, she has never come in over 145 so she shouldn’t have a problem now either. i think her appearance is deceiving and that she probably weighs less than she looks.
i also think her short haircut makes her look heavier than when it’s longer. check out some older press pics when she was in limbo w/ strikeforce compared to these pics.

When women’s boxing got some media attention a few years back, I started watching the high profile fighters……& was utterly disappointed w/their skillset. Then I saw Gina Carano’s fights & was soooo impressed w/her striking & athleticism.
Her failure to make weight & stay in shape is making me less of a fan every time I see her. She is sitting on a lottery ticket w/her looks & talent. But I’m afraid it’s under a bucket of fried chicken & a large soda.

Crying over what ifs??
So many people here are crying about her making weight for this fight and that she will never do it looking at that pic. Callign her fat and all sorts of other things. First off, for those that think she is fat, chunky, pillsbury dough boyish or whatever, if she came up and asked you out not one here would turn her down.
Second, I was unaware so many people here had the amazing ability to look at a picture of a woman with a shirt on and tell her weight. Seems to me many of you have a career at the amusement park just waiting for you.
If she had a bathing suit top on I could see making some claims that she looks on the heavy side for the cut to 145.
Fact is, she is a pro athlete and muay thai champ. To question her ability to train hard is ridiculous.
If, come weigh ins, she is over, blast her all you want but until then how about we focus on how great of a fight this will be for mma as a whole?

I would absolutely turn her down, and that argument is one of the most overused pieces of drivel, right up there with all the ‘true fan’ bullshit. We have many many many pictures of her to compare with, and yes she does look heavier than she normally has looked, and when she looked thinner she still had problems making weight.
A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.
She had problems making 140! This fight is not at 140 but rather at 145. When she makes weight I will be happy to come back and hear you say you were wrong and it is much harder to tell by pictures if one is on schedule to make weight.
This is the biggest women’s mma fight to date and I have a hard time believing that Randy or anyone else at Xtreme Couture would allow her to slack off and not make weight. Not only would it be very bad for women’s mma but also for Gina and the Xtreme Couture camp.

More of the standard internet bullshit. I hope she makes weight, I am not saying she won’t. But she is obviously heavier than normal. It is a straight comparison of how she looks now as opposed to how she looked in the past. These people are public figures, and being so invites the public to see them and make conclusions.
A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.
The only problem with this is that I KNOW she isn’t gonna ask me out, however I also KNOW that the AC is gonna ask for her weight here in a couple weeks and if she’s an ounce over 145 (which she obviously isn’t close to right now) then not only does she have problems, but Strikeforce and all of womens MMA as well.

Internet bullshit?? The same internet you happen to be on this very minute?? Ohh, I see.
If you actually went back and wanted to examine pictures of her then you can see that she is not far off from where she has been in the past this far out.
As I stated before, that would make her overweight fior 140, but it would make her just right for 145 where this fight takes place.
Yes they are public figures but I don’t think asnyone here is making a conclusion, more like an assumption.
