Tom Lawlor is the man: epic weigh in, fruity walk out, napping Dolloway, then septupling his pay with the sub of the night bonus and getting it shown on the PPV.

The UG is like one big fucking bridge. I try to steer clear. This website is where about 90% of all the intelligent discussion of MMA on the Internet takes place, and that’s the truth.

Belcher and Lawlor have to be feeling pretty great right now, even though Belcher took a loss on the night. I wonder what Akiyama’s actual number is, if 120k of that figure is bonus money.

Locker room bonuses, sponsorship money are often quite a bit more than base pay. They are also not talked about, so the amount actually made is never known to the public.

Everyone is always willing to accept the fact the Fedor gets more than whatever is reported by Affliction, but always uses the UFC’s numbers to launch some rallying cry about how the fighters are getting screwed, it makes no sense to me.

The Dong makes 29k/29k per fight? Don’t get me wrong I love watching the guy fight, but that seems pretty high in comparison to some of the others.

I think that some of the Asian fighters that are top tier earn more then other fighters because there is more of a chance to lose the fighters to promotions in Asia.
The UFC can pay Jim Miller 11/11 and not worry about him leaving to go to Dream, or Sengoku ect… BUT I’m sure Kim is a hot comodaty over there so the UFC has to compensate him alittle better.
Plus he’s important in the same way that Brandon Vera is… Extremely popular in their national country, thus increasing PPV buys there.
by Fedorable on Jul 13, 2009 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Understood …of course Zuffa wants to get a slice of the Asian market (in this case Korea), but paying 29k/29 for a guy who wont ever be welterweight champ, could easily be 2-2 right now, and has had half his fights on the undercard (shoud have been three but his bout with Matt Brown was bumped up thanks to Karo) seems like overkill. Hell, Yoshida only made 10k/10k for UFC 98 and IMO he’s a better fighter and much more entertaining.
by Rusty Trombone on Jul 13, 2009 4:01 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It interesting how of the 6 undercard fights, 4 of the winners (except coleman and Kim) made significantly less then their counterpart

That's probably true
I remember when Pride had their US shows.
The US amounts were low, and it was suggested that Japanese fighters got money on the side in their own currency for tax purposes.
Just rumors…never confirmation, but I thought that was interesting.

I don’t think this can be said loud enough. It’s a shame that TJ Grant didn’t make more money but without big goofs like Brock Lesnar drawing the public into the sport then guys like Grant are never going to make much more money doing it than they are now. The money in the sport grows from the top down not the bottom up.

There’s also the fact that Brock Lesnar is one of the best heavyweights on the planet and Grant is maybe top 50 at welterweight.

Well yea that’s obvious but the point here really is that the sport thrives on what the stars bring to it and that is the reason TJ Grant gets to make anything at all fighting. There was a time that the top guys in the sport and the undercard guys who were just trying to get people’s attention made close to the same money…… they were all starving. I doubt any of them want to go back to that.
by who me on Jul 13, 2009 8:22 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The guys on the PGA were hardly starving, but you don’t hear too many of them complaining about Tiger Woods these days, since his arrival brought in more money, sponsorships, and attention than they’d gotten in the 100 years (combined) before he joined the tour. Big names = big dollars, and eventually, the money trickles down.
Love him or hate him (see: the artist formerly known as MattPa) – he provokes everyone to feel something, which is exactly what the business side of the sport requires.

Mir’s contract is from prior to him beating Brock the first time, he was not exactly setting the world on fire.
That said, Frank is walking away with mid six figures for this fight. Frank and Alves both will end up making a hell of a lot more than listed.
GSP also gets a cut of the ppv and will end up around 3 million, making his total for his two 2009 fights about 5.5 million.

If you believe that Mir only gets 40k for this...
then you also believe that Brock Lesnar will destroy MMA forever.
by cyph on Jul 13, 2009 5:47 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Some Math….
Reported Pay: $1,790,000
Bonuses: $400,000
Lesnar Bonus: $2,600,000
TOTAL: $4,790,000
And GSP & Mir likely got more. My guess would be that payroll is over $6 Million easy.
That’s a huge difference compared to 5 years ago. The sport has really grown.
by AlwaysRelaxing on Jul 13, 2009 5:51 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
UPDATE: Dave Meltzer is saying Frank Mir got 7 figures for his fight. GSP likely did too.
Which means the payroll was likely over $7 Million easy.
