K-1 World MAX 2009 Final 8 Results

090713_max_medium

In an attempt to keep everyone informed on the happenings around the world involving your favorite fighters, we are posting the K-1 MAX 2009 Final 8 Results now. The event is re-airing on HDNet on Friday at 10 PM EST for those of you who don't want the results spoiled. The results are posted after the jump, so beware... this is a SPOILER POST.

Star-divide

In one of the biggest upsets of the year, Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto was knocked out in the first round of his K-1 kickboxing match against Korean Jae Hee Cheon. After losing his match against newcomer Joe Warren at DREAM 9, it looks like Yamamoto has some serious training to do in order to get back into championship form once again. This probably won't hurt his drawing power substantially, but it's a huge setback for him.

Here's how the event went down:

Superfight: Masato defeats Tatsuya Kawajiri via TKO at 1:43 in Round 2
Reserve Fight: Yoshihiro Sato defeats Joeri Mes via Decision (Ext. Round)
Reserve Fight: Yasuhiro Kido defeats Leroy Kaestner via Decision (3-0)
Superfight: Jae Hee Cheon defeats Norifumi "Kid" Yamamto via KO at 1:20 in Round 1
Final 8: Buakaw Por. Pramuk defeats Nieky Holtzken via Decision (3-0)
Final 8: Andy Souwer defeats Artur Kyshenko via Decision (3-0)
Final 8: Giorgo Petrosyan defeats Albert Kraus via Decision (3-0)
Final 8: Yuya Yamamoto defeats DRAGO via Decision (3-0)
Superfight: HIROYA defeats Kiko Lopez via Decision (3-0)
Superfight: Dzhabar "Chengiskhan" Askerov defeats HINATA via Decision (3-0)
Opening Fight: Jae Gil No defeats Go Yokoyama via KO at 2:01 in Round 3

Interestingly enough, Kawajiri didn't stand much of a chance against the K-1 MAX legend in Masato. The K-1 Final 8 fights went as expected with Pramuk, Souwer, Petrosyan, and Yamamoto winning. I truly felt DRAGO wasn't a lock pick by any mean, and a lot of people felt he was given a gift at It's SHOWTIME. Video coming later...

completly outclassed

bad striking technique, lazy and wide right hook, drops his left hand, etc

kid needs to stick to mma and quit getting knocked out in k1.

Bad night for MMA guys.

Kid’s homie Atsushi Yamamoto also got demolished in the 1st round (2:15) by Kazuhisa Watanabe.

Yeah

Atsushi can’t simply strike to decision in K-1, but I’m a bit surprised Watanabe won.

I think the bigger problem is you can’t just shoot for double-legs every time you get rocked in K-1.

Exactly.

This sucks for Kawajiri

I remember him saying he didn’t even want to do this event, but they forced him.

Shameless self-promotion! http://twitter.com/scb0212

i feel pretty bad for him

he could have spent this time training for mma and a fight he wasn’t guaranteed to lose instead of being forced to waste his time

Forced?

For this bout? Do you have a link/evidence?
There were claims he was forced into a K-1 bout on the 2008 NYE card (Kawajiri never said he was forced) – haven’t heard anything like that for this card
Do agree that it does suck for Kawajiri – hopefully he gets an mma bout for the 2009 NYE card, Hansen or Aoki would be a great fight

I was remembering this post. Kawajiri never explicitly mentions any event by name (mea culpa there), but it is suspicious.

Thanks

If you check the original Interview Kid Nate was referring to in that post (the sherdog link), you can see that Kawajiri was talking about the K-1 2008 NYE card. Not this card. In fact, the interview is pretty interesting:
Sherdog: You’re fighting Masato under K-1 rules in July. Do you feel there’s a need for you to step in the K-1 ring again?
Kawajiri: I learned a lot on New Year’s Eve fighting under the K-1 rules. It’s just a method of becoming a string [sic] MMA fighter. Also, it’s fun to fight against strong guys. There is a sense of pleasure, too.

I think it’s less suspicious when you read the original interview

Good to see Buakaw and Souwer in the Final 4. I really hope one of these guys wins the lot this year so that the fight with MASATO means that bit more.
As for Kawajiri, he wanted this fight bad, it was the NYE K-1 fight he didn’t want. He’d been calling MASATO out for a while now.

The finish to the Masato/Kawajiri bout was grueling.

I wanted to lie down myself.

It ends in an armbar or a strangle regardless.

Makes it sound like Souwer was supposed to win, when that really wasn’t the case (and he should have lost the decision with no need for an extension round, either).
