Major Story: Cofield Sucks at Betting

This isn’t a major story, it’s just a rant at Cofield’s terrible betting picks. I hope nobody is being chased by a bookie right now.

After writing about how he couldn’t possibly see how Miller could beat Danzig, it happened. Grant lost, Belcher lost, Grice lost.

I wish some of these more mainstream writers would get a clue. Some of the arguments Cofield was making sounded like a newbie fan. It seemed like Cofield didn’t know too much about Miller’s background as one of the toughest fighters in the division.

anyone can have an off night

which I certainly did at UFC 100. But in the interest of perspective lets look at our pre UFC 100 picks record:

Cannon J: 59-25
Brent B. 59-34
Kid Nate: 59-35
Mike Fagan: 49-34
Mike Rome: 42-28
Luke: 32-22
Nick: 32-25
Leland 17-16
Eugene 15-8
Nelson: 9-10

someone with time will have to add that up

shouldn’t take long.
I’m sure I’m not in 3rd place anymore!

you are ten wins up on 4th. I would think you would still be in third even if you used a coin to pick fights.

I don’t know, I never pride myself on actual PICKS. But betting, I’m normally decent at at least making the easy picks. I thought Miller over Danzig was a solid pick, but Cofield’s explanations as to why he picked Danzig seems to hit at Miller over the course of the week.

Moreover...

Cofield’s reasoning was that Miller lost to Gray Maynard. I took it as okay… Maynard isn’t that good according to Cofield then if Miller losing to him sways your decision to pick Danzig? I didn’t get it, and I still don’t.

ah

I like Cofield’s commentary and interviews. Don’t pay any attention to his betting recommendation.
I figure anybody in Vegas that’s a public figure talking about betting on fights is going to distort the betting flow so much that they need to be tuned out except insofar as they are moving the lines.

It just rubbed me the wrong way. It gave me a sense that Cofield didn’t know anything about Miller at all. Because Miller lost to Maynard, he picked Danzig? It just seems strange to me that he would base a decision on that fight because Maynard, a future contender, defeated Miller in a route win.

Also, he did make the same assumptions in some of his interviews, but I suppose he has to stay consistent with his original view. I don’t mind Cofield, but he makes some ridiculous claims sometimes that I feel are completely unresearched. Commentary and interviews-wise, he’s pretty good.

Now, if only they could educate Maggie Hendricks.

Yeah...

Yeah…he was definitely off. I had Danzig myself…thought he would come out gunning in his “pink slip” fight. I had Belcher as well, and I won’t condemn anyone for that pick

Yes, but did you pick Danzig purely because Miller got can-crushed by Maynard?

Carwin calling Brock's post fight antics lame?

I hear the guy who wrote that fanpost is real smart and handsome. Hahaha. :P

How bout the coverage of mainstream media?

Espn and sportsillustrated/CNN covered it also right?

by Anton Tabuena on Jul 13, 2009 10:06 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

they really didn't do any noteworthy post-fight posts yet

Gross at SI only post 2 or 3x per week. ESPN = Sherdog. CNN rehashed the AP report.
The MSM will do the “who won” posts immediately after the fight, but we’ve got that more than covered. Their analysis takes much longer to produce.
