UFC 100 Quote of the Day: Dana White Promises Fans Brock Lesnar vs Fedor Emelianenko "Eventually"

Lesnar-fedor-199_medium

"This whole Fedor thing has been going on and on and on. I keep saying this and that about him and he keeps waiting. Eventually, Fedor's going to be here. I want Fedor. I want him to come to the UFC and everything else.

"This guy just became the heavyweight champion. We'll end up getting that deal done. And then we'll do Brock vs. Fedor, and it'll be a huge fight."

Dana White at the post UFC press conference as reported at AOL Fanhouse.

I want Brock to lose, but no way. I have to take Lesnar in this fight. Fedor has never dealt with a guy that big and athletic.

they really ought to be in two different weight classes

the need for a 230lb class has never been clearer to me.

I think it makes sense in the long term, but it would be kinda fruitless to splinter the UFC’s HW division just as it was getting interesting.

by capital L on Jul 12, 2009 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions

all the real fast risers are over 230

except for Velasquez.
Let Fedor, Big Nog, Randy, Chuck Liddell and Cain have their own division. And Cro Cop and dos Santos too.

TUF 10: MEGATON will hopefully yield some intriguing new talent. And a Super HW division would release some steam from the broiling 205 division. Nonetheless, I maintain that there’s no reason to up and switch things just yet.

by capital L on Jul 12, 2009 11:21 AM EDT up reply actions

not for another few years...

The sport’s still too young, and there wouldn’t be enough quality fighters to fill those two weight classes. The reason it’s been OK so far is because usually the huge guys who have come in are slow, weighed down by the extra size… it’s only now we’re really seeing what that extra size and strength can mean in the hands of a formidable athlete.

Again, not going to happen until there are enough good fighters to fill the divisions.

by Meeaaat on Jul 12, 2009 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions

Way too early for anything like that. Right now Lesnar and Carwin are the exception rather than the rule in the HW division, and both fighters still look pretty vulnerable on their feet.

by rabrown on Jul 12, 2009 11:17 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed.

Although, the 230 to 265 class would be pretty shallow at this point.

Hong Man Choi

is a world class kickboxer. Athleticism? Check. But its a different kind of size/athleticism used in a different way.

Hong Man is not the caliber of athlete Lesnar is

if he wasn’t so tall he wouldn’t be a world-class anything. Lesnar has the reflexes to be great at any size.

by cyph on Jul 12, 2009 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I would say that

Fedor is significantly better than either Couture or Mir. But not in a totally different league, especially as it pertains to how they stack up against Lesnar.

Fedor could potentially clock Brock and put him out with a well-timed punch, but I don’t see any other reasonable route to victory for the Russian in this matchup.

Heres the thing about Fedor

Fedor is bigger and stronger than Mir, and hits a lot harder as well. His takedown defense is better so Fedor will have more control over where the fight goes, although I do think Lesnar would be able to take him down. But even then, Fedor’s submission game is much more taylor-made for making heavyweights like Lesnar it’s victims. Mir’s slapped on some nice armbars over the years and the kneebar against Lesnar the first time made last night’s fight possible, but then look and see: he’s got a kimura, a triangle, etc etc, and the fact of the matter is it is exceptionally difficult for a guy like Mir to catch a Brock Lesnar in a triangle/kimura, etc. Fedors proficiency in the larger joint locks like armbars and kneebars give him an edge over Mir on the ground against an opponent like Lesnar IMO.

Fedor is shorter and lighter than Mir

don’t know about the strength, but unless you’re talking about some 5th dimensional space I can’t perceive you are factually incorrect.
Mir is 6’3" (probably actually 6’2") and 245-250.
Fedor is 6’1" and 230 and could probably cut weight to make 205lbs.

yeah i ammended it

what I mean as far as strength is just functional strength i guess. Its almost liek when you have two guys go to the gym that are teh same strength. Hitting the same weights may be easier for one guy than the other because his technique is just better or what have you. I think Fedor, in his throws and takedowns and punches is better at making the most out of his body, and plus I think his weight is deceptive as I absolutely think Fedor hits harder than Mir and makes his weight count more on the mat.

by Chadsac on Jul 12, 2009 1:54 PM EDT reply actions

Why, Dana could definitely get Barnett and he is just as easily marketed to casual fans (if not more due to his looks and personality) and its a much safer fight for Brock

"Japan is half-Machida" - iiowyn

Barnett coming back to the UFC is pretty unlikely.

by capital L on Jul 12, 2009 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions

You have to give Fedor though that he hits like a ton of bricks. He finished Sylvia and Arlovski within moments. Neither of them are particularly small guys. I think he’d be the first opponent Lesnar faced who is as if not more likely to knock him out than vice versa.

by ChrisBat on Jul 12, 2009 2:46 PM EDT reply actions

I would probably concede that Fedor has a better chance of KO’ing Brock than the reverse, but I wouldn’t say that Fedor has more power than Brock. Just a better overall striking game with similar (apparent) tools.

Fedor really should fight LHW. He could clear everything out at that weight, which would be far more impressive than fighting the half-dozen talented fighters at HW that live outside the UFC.

If Machida is who everyone (including me) thinks he is, that would be the ultimate fight for the hardcore fan. And who knows, maybe one day soon it would be a huge match for the casual fan as well.

Pretty damn good, was messing about with Google trends, and Machida got the third highest index for any UFC fighter for his title shot at 98, only beaten by Lesnar and strangely enough, Penn for 94.

by iiowyn on Jul 12, 2009 9:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Fedor does not hit like a ton of bricks. Other than KO’ing glass jaw Arlovski, Fedor is not known for his KO power. He will have to submit Brock and that is a tall order.

by cyph on Jul 12, 2009 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Almost a quarter of his fights have been finished by KO/TKO…

by EnsignFrog on Jul 12, 2009 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Look up the names of who he TKO’ed. How many of them are not cans? The only one other than Arlovski was Heath Herring who lost by cut.

by cyph on Jul 12, 2009 10:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Still, listen to Silvia after the post fight conference from Affliction 1. He said that Fedor hits harder than anyone he’s ever fought before. Silvia might be a bit of a joke at this point, but he’s fought a lot of guys, thats a big call to make.

My Prediction...

Fedor finally joins the UFC early next year….and loses to Brock.

This forces the UFC to adopt at 230 pound cruiser weight division which Fedor dominates till retirement.

by MMA_Messiah on Jul 12, 2009 3:26 PM EDT reply actions

^this

Fedor’s not had the same level of competition that most of the heavyweight division has has to offer.

Granted Arlovski lost to Fedor, but I can’t see Fedor or his …

You know what, I’m just not a Fedor fan, ’nuff said.

by JAYGK95 on Jul 12, 2009 11:50 PM EDT up reply actions

dude. seriously?

cro cop
noguiera
matt lindland
tim sylvia
arlovski
coleman
randleman
herring
babalu
arona

not same level of competition as Frank Mir, 40+ yr old Couture and hering? come on dude

he was injured. injured bad.

by troy145 on Jul 13, 2009 12:46 AM EDT up reply actions

Mir would likely beat everyone on that list. In fact, he’s beaten two of the best ones (Sylvia and Noguiera).

The only person on that list who I think would give Couture trouble is Nog, and we get to see the outcome of that fight.

I’m not taking anything away from Fedor, he is ranked number one for a reason, but at this point the list of fighters that he has defeated is beginning to lose it’s luster to me. The people on the top (Sylvia, Noguiera, Arlovski) are on a downspin, and the people on the bottom are becoming irrelevant.

by Captain7 on Jul 13, 2009 1:22 AM EDT up reply actions

Not trying to be offensive here, but

Did you just get in to MMA? Do you really think Tim Sylvia is that much better than Cro Cop or Arona? Arlovski is a stud but has he beaten anyone other than Tim, Cabbage, or Paul Buentello? Youre really going to just dismiss Kevin Randleman circa 2004, or Matt Lindland?

Sorry dude but you just love UFC blindly is how it seems.
