UFC 100: Dan Henderson Admits Hitting Michael Bisping Late

Hendo_682x400_843963a_medium

Dan Henderson made no bones about hitting Michael Bisping when he knew he was finished, from MMA Mania:

I believe I [shut him up] for a little while, I don’t know if he’ll ever shut his mouth completely, though. Normally, I’m not that way in fights. I know if a guy is out. I tend to stop. I knew I hit him out. I think that last one was just to shut him up a little bit."

He said the same thing in the cage while talking to Rogan. Or is this for the people who didn’t buy the event?

Gottha.

I thought it might have been a “scoop” that even Dan knew it was late. Kind of a stir the pot story. Thank you for the clarification.

I don’t wanna say it, but I knew it as soon as I saw the punch, and I don’t care. I giggle like a schoolgirl every time I see it. It was such an obvious fuck you, and where Gilbet Yvel’s mauling had me enraged, I don’t care about this at all.

by inadvertentgroinstrike on Jul 12, 2009 2:54 AM EDT reply actions

Exactly

And out of everybody in my group everybody was upset that Hendo did that. I obviously disagreed. It’s a split second decision too. Dan sees him go down and needs to pounce on him. With all the crappy refereeing we’ve seen lately why would he think about taking any chances? As a fighter you can’t have that moment of indecision to creep in at any time.

by dedstrk316 on Jul 12, 2009 9:18 AM EDT up reply actions

You are right but....

I would have been more impressed with Hendo had he not thrown that last shot. CAll me crazy but I am a fan of restraint and self control. Rampage throwing two punches to Wandy while the ref was trying to pull him off was worse for sure. Hendo probably should’t have been so honest about his intentions with the last blow.

You have to admit, that flying punch/elbow of doom was pretty awesome looking.

I dont know why everyone is getting all mad at the late hit. I didnt hear ppl cry when rapage did the same shit to wand. Qoute ufc4 You never stop til the ref steps in, MMA rule #1

The ref was pulling Rampage off at the time, Dan stopped as soon as the ref stepped in.

One of the nastiest KO’s every imo. Nice end to this season of TUF. I had a creeping feeling the whole time, as Bisping neglected his defence against the right hand, and sucked ass at lateral movement, then it happened. Beautiful, now if only the mouthpiece went flying…haha.

All through that fight i believed hendo would catch him, look at bispings hands there down and chin up,if is such a technical boxer like he say he should have his chin down at least…………………what a shot though wow

yeah

I was less than impressed with Bispings performance. I expected much better boxing than that. Oh well.

by mythbuster on Jul 12, 2009 12:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Not to mention how he kept circling INTO Henderson’s right hand rather than away from it.

by Steve4192 on Jul 12, 2009 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions

That was Hendo more than Bisping.

Watch this fight again and you will se that Hendo did not allow Bisping to go anywhere but left. It reminded me of when I used to play pick up games os Basketball. I knew if I just defended a guy by standing on his right side he would have to go to his left. Most guys can’t dribble for shit with their left hand and they would get really frustrated. Watch Hendo and you can see it. Everytime Bisping tried to step to his right Hendo would cut him off. Bisping was so afraid of being taken down and wrestled by Hendo that he didn’t want to stand still Basically Hendo gave Bisping two options: a) circle to his left and into Hendo’s right hand or, b) Stand in front of Hendo and throw or get taken down.

It’s one thing to hit a guy like that — as many have said, you keep going until the ref stops it — but to take some sort of pleasure in hitting an unconscious opponent, even after the fact (and yes, in the postfight) …

That’s not going to make this sport easier to sell to a more mainstream crowd. Fortunately, they’ll all be obsessed with Lesnar, who’s much more contrite.

by Beau Dure on Jul 12, 2009 3:26 AM EDT reply actions

Good post.

I’ve always respected Hendo because he’s a tough fighter and has a pretty dry sense of humour that many people don’t get. I won’t criticise him throwing the extra shot because it’s the referee’s job to protect his opponent, but taking some perverse pleasure from that shot doesn’t reflect well on him as a person. I’d like to think he’s a better person than that.

it is funny how much joy people are getting out of this. The only reason there was any interest in this fight was because of Bisping hyping it. Obviously he draws the negative attn. to himself, and this will happen when he gets knocked out, but i think Hendo came off as a real dick. I really am looking forward to seeing Anderson kick the crap out of him again (a little more so this time, maybe a 2nd round KO), or even Nate/Maia taking Hendo back down a level or 2. It’s one thing to knock a guy out with a nasty shot, but gloating about a late hit really is not something people should be so proud of. And i am not necessarily a Bisping fan either, just a real jerk-off thing to do

by mo dogg on Jul 12, 2009 3:49 AM EDT reply actions   1 recs

I agree mostly, but have to say this…The USA vs. UK format is what got the people where I lived riled up. I live very close to an army base, and the blind USA love was running wild. I really do not like the VS. Format for TUF.

And for the record, Nate would destroy Hendo, and I would pay to see it.

"You guys are jerking eachother off with some pseudo deep bullshit." - Kid Nate

by Kaleb Kelchner on Jul 12, 2009 4:09 AM EDT up reply actions

hmm, maybe that is what i am missing. I was all for the “USA” chants when i used to watch Hulk Hogan vs. Iron Sheik in my pajamas, but I didn’t think people actually bought into the whole USA vs. UK thing. But maybe that is why so many people really were in a frenzy loving this. Bisping did embelish this heel role, and i guess people didn’t like that.

by mo dogg on Jul 12, 2009 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes people were only interested in this fight because of Bisping, and not because it featured one of the grittiest veteran fighters in the sport who has been accumulating fans for over ten years.

by George Lucas on Jul 12, 2009 4:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Didn’t see too many people saying “I want Hendo to win”, opposed to “I want Bisping to lose”.

So yes, while you were trying to be sarcastic, you were actually saying the truth.

by mythbuster on Jul 12, 2009 9:41 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

I like Dan but was disgusted with that. He knew the opponent was out, and dropped on his head with his full body weight behind it — that’s the kind of crap that should have gone away with the Tank Abbotts of the sport.

And the joy people are taking in it… crazy.

by mythbuster on Jul 12, 2009 9:44 AM EDT up reply actions

He knew Bisping was out after he had jumped. Hendo is good, but gravity is the law.

by mythbuster on Jul 12, 2009 11:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed. Further, the crowd erupted when they saw the second shot on the replay. They enjoyed it live but on repeated viewings they loved it. It made me a little sick. That’s not a part of the sport I love.

by jebushchrist on Jul 12, 2009 10:28 AM EDT up reply actions

Ditto

It reminds me more of the felon fights stuff. This is part of the barbarism that critics have talked about, where its “yay for violence!” rather than the sport that it tries to be.

And, as much as I dislike fighters like Lesnar, Penn, Evans, etc. I would have felt the same way if this had been done to them. Disgusting.

by mythbuster on Jul 12, 2009 11:14 AM EDT up reply actions

And they showed it over … and over … and over … and over. If I had eaten anything in the hours preceding that fight, I might have vomited.

by Beau Dure on Jul 12, 2009 3:24 PM EDT up reply actions

We generally get stuck into the refs when they mess up, but this was a perfect stoppage from Mario. He couldnt have stopped that first shot on the ground, but he moved in as Hendo moved in and ended it quickly.

by GeeDub on Jul 12, 2009 4:49 AM EDT reply actions

In the post fight conference, Dana said that Dan said it was a joke.

by -Sam on Jul 12, 2009 7:33 AM EDT reply actions

That's the way I saw it

The ref almost never jumps in right away; I don’t think this is the first time anyone here has seen a KOed fighter take another shot on the ground. Hendo was just following protocol, and to me the post-fight comment came off as a spur of the moment joke.

The coverage on this is truly bizarre though; most of the articles I’ve read make it seem like this is the first time something like this has ever happened.

by Shaun32887 on Jul 12, 2009 10:47 AM EDT up reply actions

Gotta love it...

If this had somehow been the other way around and it was Bisping that KO’ed him and hit him clean after the knockout only to then talk about how he knew he was out but wanted to “shut him up” people would be losing their shit about the awful monster that is Michael Bisping.

It is the “cocky and mouthy bastard getting his lumps” syndrome. That said, Hendo stopped as soon as the ref touched him.

A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.

by iiowyn on Jul 12, 2009 10:25 AM EDT up reply actions

Well if it was the other way around, Bisping wouldnt have a lot to say in his defense on how Hendo antagonized him and and asked for it. Bisping clearly got diahrrea of the mouth and wrote a check his ass couldnt cash. If you are going to go with the “shoe was on the other foot arguement” then you would have to create a situation in where Hendo’s mouth put him in the position for Bisping to be “justified” in taking an extra shot. I really dont seeing this being part of Hendo’s character. Bisping seemed to take pleasure in running his mouth every opportunity he got, and he paid for it. All the “hate” on Bisping didnt come from no where, he brought it upon himself.

by Ozone on Jul 12, 2009 11:54 AM EDT up reply actions

I really don’t see what the big deal is – while I’d prefer for fighters to stop once they realize their opponents are out (Franklin/Quarry), you can’t fault them for continuing until the ref stops it. The only time I think the fighter is responsible is if the ref takes too long to respond (Yvel/Rizzo – there was no reason for the last few power shots), & the ref still should take most of the blame for the late stoppage.

sure, but you don’t gloat about hitting a guy who is knocked out. I compare it a little bit to the whole situation with Babalu, which was obviously worse because he ignored the ref, but what got Babalu in all the trouble is what he said after he held the choke on Heath was what he said after the fight. If Hendo didn’t gloat about it there probably wouldn’t be so much of an issue.

if Hendo had said the last punch was to make sure he won the fight there would be no problem. but it’s a big no no to smile and admit he deliberately hit an unconscious man to get revenge for him talking shit.

it was a great KO and im glad he won, but Hendo is the one that should of kept his mouth shut here…….

that turn an otherwise mild-mannered guy into an infuriated opponent who wants to kill you. I believe that Bisping’s shit-talking was what made the real difference in Hendo fighting a smart fight & with very very bad intentions.
