UFC 100: Three Main Events, Same Scenario.

Today is the day of the biggest card of the year, and I am PUMPED! As much as I wish I could have been in Vegas to watch, I'm 16 and stuck watching it at home. But oh well. I've been watching the preview alll day long on the PPV channel, and I noticed something very interesting. There are three main event's on this card and all three have the same scenario involved: Power vs. Technique. Dan Henderson vs. Michael Bisping involves the power punching ability of Henderson knocking out the technique-driven skill of Bisping and the technique-driven skill of Bisping outpointing the power-punching ability of Henderson. Same with Georges St. Pierre vs. Thiago Alves. Georges is looking to out-point and out-skill Thiago, whereas Thiago is looking to land a huge bomb on St. Pierre's face. And, of course, Lesnar has already stated the obvious that he is looking to use every ounce of muscle in his boulder-size arms to plant Mir on the ground, while Mir is looking to rip any part of those boulder limbs off with his technique. So in reality, we are looking at three guys who are looking for that puncher's chance (not saying they don't have more than that, but it's basically the intention of Lesnar, Alves, and Henderson to land one punch) and three guys who want to show that skill beats brute force (in the case of Mir, St. Pierre, and Bisping). So who do you chose? The one's that can end the fight at any moment with one shot or the ones who might have to work a bit, but will eventually pull something out? Tonight...shall...be...epic.

Hendo leaves more skill in his morning dump than Bisping has altogether. Hendo is a former Olympic wrestler… faced and beaten far tougher opponents… Bisping has… wait what has Bisping done? I know he has ran his mouth a lot… hmm.

I guess we will just have to wait and see.

Henderson WAS a former Olympic wrestler, and he HAS fought and beaten tougher opponents, but that was in his prime. The truth is he hasn’t finished an opponent in almost 5 years — with the exception of Wandy, who’s lost 5 of his last 6.

And agreed with goodbones,

I was writing my response while yours popped up so they sound similar. Haha.

Not sure what any of this has to do with Henderson’s skill level.

I poop rainbows.

As in his skill is not what it once was in Pride, same as Nogueria. Big Nog still has some of those skills, but they both are not as dominate as they once were.

nog had lost once in the ufc

and was in the hospital the same week he was in the cage during that fight. i would not question his skill yet.

Henderson is STILL a former Olympic wrestler. And Bisping, seriously what has he done to show all his skill? I’m only arguing that Hendo has a higher skill level than Mikey.

by MMAcGyver on Jul 11, 2009 5:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, my bad on that one. I suppose what I meant was that Hendo was an Olympic Wrestler back in 92 and 96… about 13-17 years ago…

by goodbones on Jul 11, 2009 7:42 PM EDT up reply actions

But that is still the same answer I have heard from everyone. Back in Pride, Henderson was knockin’ dudes out left and right or pounding them to a decision. But now, his last three fights involved two decision and him getting choked out. Now that he is basically a pure decision fighter, what happens against someone that can stick and move while Henderson throws bombs? Even with a takedown, who says Bisping won’t pull a Sanchez and work from the bottom, so even then he still wins the round. Either way, I think everyone is looking at the Henderson of the old and not the new generation, even if I hate Bisping with a passion.

In 10 years Henderson will still be better than Bisping is right now.

Due to Cheick Kongo's atrocious takedown defense....

Some people might say that winning a fight makes you a better fighter but I don’t agree with that.- BlueberryMuffin

I guess some people just don’t want to let go…

Yeah

A guy that just beat Rich Franklin is washed up, but the guy who beat Chainsaw Charles is a stud. Sounds pretty accurate..

I poop rainbows.

NO dude...

Dan henderson is washed up because he lost to two of the best people in their respective weight classes… Bisping is MONEY because he lost to rashad evans and matt hamill

This comment doesn’t jive with your original article. Now you’re saying Hendo can’t knock anyone out, whereas the purpose of your story was to reflect that his best change is to knock him out with “power punching”.

Best chance, that is.

I poop rainbows.

by Blackout612 on Jul 11, 2009 5:09 PM EDT up reply actions

No,

He has a puncher’s chance, just like every other fighter in the world. I’m just saying in my personal opinion that he isn’t as dominate as he was in Pride and now he’s more or less a decision fighter, and that’s where Bisping shines is when he can outpoint some one. Can Henderson knock Bisping out? Yea. And that is his best chance, it just may not be enough. Although I honestly can say I dont know who’s gonna win.

Dude, his best chance is to take Bisping and put him on his back, and then pound him. His overhand right could end the fight, but it is certainly not his best chance.

by MMAcGyver on Jul 11, 2009 5:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

Hendo is definitely more likely to win if it goes to a decision, thanks to his wrestling. And if someone wins on a punchers chance, it’d probably be Bisping (though, that’s quite unlikely to happen).

I poop rainbows.

Hendo very well might Sherk himself to a loss.

I hate to break it to you, but the way Brock used his muslcle to pin Mir to the ground so he couldn’t even think of getting him in a submission and also couldn’t block his face whil brock tried to punch it through the mat required some sort of technique.

People don’t seem to like it, but wrestling is an actual skill that is very useful when it comes to MMA. Just because method of winning in greco/freestyle/folkstyle wrestling isn’t a method of winning an mma match doesn’t make it less of a skill.
