Alan Belcher vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama - Round 1 - Belcher with a few leg kicks to get things going. Right hand lands now. High kick misses for Akiyama. Akiyama is throwing hard here but not landing yet. Punch lands for Akiyama, high kick just misses as a follow up. Low blow by Belcher and Akiyama looks hurt badly by it. Both guys land right hands as they start again. Belcher is sticking to the leg kicks and they're landing solid. Body kick, right hand combo by Akiyama. Left hand by Belcher and Akiyama goes down for a second but jumps back up and his legs look okay. USA chants now by the crowd which is always lame. High kick, right hand combo by Akiyama now. Good leg kick by Belcher. Three punch combo including a solid right hand by Akiyama. Now more shots for Yoshihiro and Belcher is firing back with power shots. Akiyama is swelling up a little. Kick by Belcher is caught by Akiyama who trips him. 10-9 Belcher for the more telling shots on my card. Round 2 - Kick by Belcher and Akiyama takes him down off of it. Belcher with a really nice sweep but Akiyama ends up back on top as Belcher tries for a leg lock. Elbows from Akiyama as Belcher regains his full guard. Akiyama with a nice right hand from the top. Belcher looking for another sweep from half guard but can't finish the move. Belcher gets back to standing however and they're striking again. Big uppercut by Akiyama. Leg kick by Belcher again. Left hand lands for Belcher. Right hand by Belcher lands as does a very big leg kick. Akiyama is starting to look a bit winded but the round ends and he clearly won it to get the fight back to even on my card 19-19. The leg kicks do have Akiyama limping a bit. Round 3 - Belcher hits the leg kick again and Akiyama is hurting badly from the leg kicks. Three solid punches from Akiyama. REALLY good body shots by Belcher and now a kick to the body. Belcher is easing up on the leg kicks for some reason. Akiyama's eye is almost totally closed now. Another leg kick by Alan. Spinning back kick misses for Akiyama. Belcher lands leg kicks and tries to throw the high kick and just misses. Akiyama with a counter shot. Right hand by Akiyama. Both guys are landing shots now. Belcher is caught off balance and pops back up. Superman punch by Belcher. Jabs by both guys and a leg kick by Belcher. Takedown by Akiyama after a missed spinning backfist. Belcher explodes to his feet and the fight is over. 10-9 Belcher and I gave him the fight 29-28. Official Scorecards: 30-27 Akiyama, 29-28 Belcher, 29-28 Akiyama. Yoshihiro Akiyama wins by split decision.
Michael Bisping vs. Dan Henderson - Round 1- 2 fights, 2 USA chants. Jab by Bisping. Dan is cutting off the cage and misses with the right hand. Nice counter by Bisping. Henderson lands a few power shots and Bisping has to retreat. Left hand by Bisping. Henderson again is loading up the right hand. Right hand again by Dan. High kick misses for Bisping. Right hand lands for Michael. Leg kick by Bisping and he is looking a little better here. 1-2 combo by Bisping. Right hand by Bisping again. High kick, left hand which lands for Bisping. Right hand by Bisping again and he is winning the second half of the round. Hendo is mauling him against the cage but they separate. Hendo with a right hand to end the round. 10-9 Henderson. Round 2 - Leg kick by Bisping early. Right hand by Henderson, knee to the body for Bisping. Right hand by Henderson lands solid. Jab by Hendo. Counter right by Bisping. Right hand by Bisping. Knee to the body by Bisping and Hendo is getting a bit off his game having to chase and get a little bit sloppy. Right hand by Henderson and Bisping is out cold! HUGE shot! Wow! Dan Henderson wins by knockout, round 2.
Georges St. Pierre vs. Thiago Alves for the UFC Welterweight Championship - Round 1 -Huge GSP chants from the crowd. High kick, low kick, right hand comb by Alves. GSP with a takedown and Alves stands up but GSP just takes him right back down. His wrestling is just SO good for MMA. GSP tries to pass to mount but Alves stands up. GSP has his back standing and takes him down. GSP has his back with the hooks in. Alves rolls over and they're back to standing. Jab by GSP. Leg kick by Georges. Alves is woking the leg kicks. Alves stuffs a takedown now. Alves with a flurry of strikes and Georges gets a nice takedown off the kick. Alves now with a small cut. Thiago to his feet and GSP has him against the cage as time expires. 10-9 St. Pierre. Round 2- GSP with a takedown and he is working the hammerfists which have Alves' nose bleeding badly. Elbow from GSP again and he is just grinding away. GSP to half guard but Alves explodes back to his feet. Round ends and again 10-9. Round 3-Alves is throwing power early and lands a left hand. Alves avoids a takedown. GSP is making him chase now, probably looking for the opening for a takedown. Takedown as soon as Alves engages and throws a kick. Alves gets back to his feet after taking a little damage Alves flurries a little. Leg kick by Alves as St Pierre throws a straight. Thaiago is dropped by a punch from GSP and now Georges is throwing a flurry or punches but Alves survives to the end of the round. 10-9 GSP. Round 4 - GSP with a big double leg thirty seconds in. Pass to full mount now by GSP. He was working for an arm triangle but Alves regained half guard. Alves tries to scramble but gets his back taken. GSP slips off and now Alves is on top. Thiago trying to land but not really getting much done. GSP pushes off and gets back to standing. Left hook by GSP. Uppercut misses by Alves. Right hand and a takedown by GSP. Thiago gives up his back and eats a knee to the ribs. GSP gets the hooks in and is trying to finish with the choke but the round ends. 10-9 GSP again and I have it a shutout heading into the fifth round. Round 5 - Thiago is looking aggressive here. Alves is stalking here. Double leg and we're back to the ground. Alves manages to get back up and we're back to striking. Again a double leg by GSP and he is on top landing punches to the body. Again Alves powers back to his knees and then standing. Again a takedown by GSP and he's just hanging out on top landing punches as the fight ends. It was a 50-45 shutout on my card. Official Scorecards: 50-45, 50-44, 50-45 - Georges St. Pierre wins by unanimous decision.
Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir for the UFC Heavyweight Championship - Round 1 - Low kick by Lesnar. And another. Right hand by Lesnar and a takedown. Mir looks for a leg and can't lock it up. Lesnar in the half guard. Mir's nose is bleeding. Lesnar with some punches to the head now. Lesnar is controling Mir's head and landing big punches to the face. More controlling punches by Lesnar and Mir's face is swelling up and bleeding. Now big shots to the body and back to the head. This is a mugging. Mir looked for a leg again and Brock just pushed him away. Hammerfist lands fro Lesnar. The round ends and it was just a mugging by Lesnar 10-9. Round 2 - Lesnar misses with a punch then gets a takedown and lets Mir up. Left hook by Mir and then a jumping knee and now Lesnar takes him down. Herb Dean is telling him to work roughly ten seconds after they hit the ground. Lesnar controls his arm and starts landing HUGE shots. Mir is dazed and stumbling and talking smack but he is bleeding badly and the fight was over. As the fans boo Lesnar flips them off. He is just a monster. Brock Lesnar wins by TKO, round 2.
Jon Fitch vs. Paulo Thiago - Round 1 - Fitch throwing kicks right away. Fitch shoots and gets caught in an arm in guillotine. But Fitch survives but now Thiago switches to a Darce. Eventually Fitch escapes from the choke and is now working for mount. Fitch is working elbows to the side of the head now. 10-9 Thiago on the sub attempt i guess. Round 2- Right hand by Fitch lands hard. Takedown by fitch and he is working to take the back. He's got a hook in and there's the other. He can't finish before the round ends and it was a 10-9 round for Fitch. Round 3 - Fitch strikes and follows behind his punch into a takedown. Fitch gets Thiago's back and Paulo stands up and jumps backward. Thiago tried for an anaconda choke but Fitch defended and has the back landing shots again. Attempted RNC but time runs out. 10-9 Fitch for a 29-28 Fitch score on my card. Official scorecards: 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28 all for Jon Fitch. Jon Fitch wins by unanimous decision.

My picks
This is the first event where I’m picking with my head instead of my heart. Last event I ended up with a score of 9 on mmaplayground. Yes, I had a 9. I was near the bottom for the event.
Here are my picks.
Lesnar
GSP
Henderson
Belcher
Fitch
Coleman
Miller

Gugerty
Looks like we are picking similarly, I’d pick lesnar to win, but I’m pulling for Frank.
Coleman “looks” in better shape this time, but I still doubt his gas tank.
Dolloway should win, but I’ll root for lawler

The Ultimate 100 was good just, because you get to see the old fights with additional commentary. It’s all well put together, but between the way the fights were ranked and the omissions, it leaves a little to be desired. Yes, I listened to Kid Nate on MMA Nation as he railed against the UFC for erasing some of its history – i.e. Frank Shamrock, Tito, and Barnett. He has a point. I’d of rather them leave all UFC contests on the table for this particular exercise.
well i can't blame the UFC..
they do deserve the props, but if they give them more exposure, the opposing promotions would get more exposure too..
by Anton Tabuena on Jul 11, 2009 9:58 PM EDT up reply actions
You know what. At this point I don’t think it matters. To me it would just show the public that the UFC is head and shoulders above the rest. I’m not saying throw them a party and give them a forum. Just include their fights.

A “robbery” would take an awful lot more than this. To have the announcers have proclaimed it as such 1 second after the decision has been handed down is just irresponsible.
They said "think"
they didn’t say “he was robbed” they said “I think he was robbed” which is a fair statement because I honestly feel the same way and I’m a defender of the word “robbery”

30-27 does not always equal lopsided fight
If one judge didn’t feel that Belcher won any round, then it’s a 30-27 decision, regardless of how close the fight was. (Unless the judge availed himself of the 10-10 option, which they seem strangely averse to)
Round 1 was pretty decisive, round 3 was very decisive.

Sorry Brent
I usually agree with you most out of all the columnists here (and your beard is cool) – but Bisping is a backpedaling jabber. Chuck in his prime and Rampage are counterpunchers in my opinion. Anyone who wins a decision and then says their plan was to outpoint the guy has no faith in their skill and is weaksauce.
Good in/out, yes. But you can actually attack a guy and still employ solid technique and footwork. Bisping doesn’t do that.
I still like you, though.
BOOSH
Right...
but it was good technique. Regardless of his attempt to finish it’s an odd thing to attack technical fighting (decision wins count the same as knockouts) style while also bitching about sloppy power shot heavy kickboxing

Was he suppose to tickle him to death? GSP does your so called “Lay n Pray” but Brock finished his fight.
I'm not saying it's a bad thing
in fact, I was being a bit sarcastic. Brock showed great skill MAINTAINING top position against Mir.
Brock had a great game plan, and when he pinned Frank against the cage after taking two shots to the head by knee strikes and capturing the leg that just cracked his skull, it was over. Brock does have a weight advantage that he uses, but I find his critics seem to think it’s the ONLY reason he wins. And it’s not. He’s smart enough now to get the fight fought where he wants it to be. And he showed that last night.
"We're not the other teams' farm system." - Andy MacPhail
No way will they give him credit...
…just like me. Everyone said Brock made a mistake in the first fight by giving that knee? I’m gonna say Frank blew it by throwing that weird knee and going to the ground.
Besides, they’ll fight again. I’ll wait to give Lesnar credit until after that one.

New Unified Rules
Any time a fighter is on top of another fighter, and the fight isn’t stopped, that will be considered Laying and Praying, and the former said fighter will be considered to be gay.
Due weighs 285
I’d lay on him, too. Mir was getting tired just fighting off Lesnar’s body weight.
"We're not the other teams' farm system." - Andy MacPhail
Why is it that people can’t understand that it isn’t always possible to be punching someone in the face while in top position? Lay and Pray? Do you think Mir is just laying there taking it, or do you think he is shifting his weight and attempting to improve his position? Is it possible Brock has to settle his weight on Mir and set up his punches? I’m so sick of the bullshit. Brock was incredibly active the majority of the fight. So was GSP. Give some credit to the guy on the bottom for neutralizing an attack.
That's the key - clearing space to strike the head
Brock did a GREAT job of pinning Frank’s arms so he could either attack the ribs or attack the head. Whichever Frank gave him, that’s what he pounded. Pretty smart move, in my opinion.

The swing fight was a bit weird. GSP is totally awesome. Henderson is good at cutting off the ring and forcing a guy to move to his left or stand in front of him. Lesnar did an amazing job but then acted like a really bizarre person. I almost felt like I was on acid when that fight was over.
