" Diego will get the next title shot against the winner of the B.J. Penn-Kenny Florian fight at UFC 101 on Aug. 8 in Philadelphia. While I agree with you that Maynard is deserving, Sanchez is a former "Ultimate Fighter" winner and is 10-2 in the UFC, not counting his wins on TUF 1."

Seriously though, YES!! Both fights are sweet but I’d rather see BJ/Sanchez.

Dude

BJ vs Sanchez is like one of those dream fights that you never really thought about. Fight of the night.

yeah I want to root for Florian, but more than anything I really want BJ vs Diego

by moopwontplay on Jul 1, 2009 3:41 PM EDT reply actions

He said he struggled with the cut again. I hope he has it down to a science by the time he faces Florian/Penn. I will root for Diego either way, I just know he can be a lot better.

What I like is his drive and desire to be the best and keep evolving. Not once against Guida did you see him get frustrated or look hopeless, even on his back.

Can’t wait to see Penn vs Sanchez

Wow

two lackluster wins in lightweight and Sanchez is the next in line, talk about self interest rather then what should happen

by proflex on Jul 1, 2009 3:53 PM EDT reply actions

Whaaaaa??? O_o

*scratches head

I wouldn’t say his last win was lackluster. Diego looked outstanding. Like Rogan said, If you didn’t like that fight then your dead. So tell us. What should happen?

I like that fight, guida is tough and relentless but diego wasn’t impressed (even though he said he was, by courtesy).

by spectaa on Jul 1, 2009 4:01 PM EDT up reply actions

This is exactly what I’m talking about, the fight was good but the win was via decision. How does that justify Diego getting a title shot after only two fights in the division, his previous fights in WW have no bearing on the LW division. And what do I think should happen, Diego should fight two or three more fights, then give him a title shot.

by proflex on Jul 1, 2009 4:27 PM EDT up reply actions

So his 10-2 record in the UFC should not count for anything and instantly become 2-0 because he dropped 15lbs??

by MMAussie on Jul 1, 2009 5:36 PM EDT up reply actions

no thats not my point

clearly evveryone seems to be missing it. how many other fighters have gone to a new weight class and had two fights like Sanchez, both decisions, and then be offered a title fight. NONE, That would be like GSP going up into 185 and doing enough to eek out two decisions and then be given Anderson, would that be fair to the other guys who have fought in the division, no it wouldn’t, thats what I’m getting at. I don’t know how I can make my point anymore clear then that.

by proflex on Jul 1, 2009 6:01 PM EDT up reply actions

There are decisions and there are decisions. Sanchez beat the shit out of Joe Daddy and was never threatened in that fight (his first at 155). Then he came out and blitzed Guida with a barrage that would have put down almost any fighter in the division and turned in an impressive performance in a fight that was only close because his opponent is tough as nails and has heart for days.

I mean, his decision wins weren’t exactly Silva-Leites. Sanchez looked very, very good in both wins, and actually much better (imo) in the second win even though the fight was more competitive. He’s obviously adapted to the weight cut, and he’s a scary looking fighter.

Going up isn’t the same as going down. And BJ only had one fight when he went back down before he got a title shot. Sean Sherk got a title shot in his first fight at LW, didn’t he?

by Tim Burke on Jul 1, 2009 6:32 PM EDT up reply actions

If GSP went up, he wouldn’t even have to eek 2 decisions. He would be given Anderson straight up, because of what he has done in the welterweight division and i don’t think anyone would be complaining too much.

I know it wasn’t a clear cut situation, but Sean Sherk lost to GSP at welterweight & then had a decision win over Diaz and fought for the lightweight title in his next fight.

by MMAussie on Jul 1, 2009 7:06 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s that one time Diego went to train with Seth Petruzelli.

that'd be huge

screw the commissions taxing policy… this needs to happen. i’d pay extra for the ppv to see that fight in a hawaiian open air stadium. bj’s entrance alone would be epic. and that’s not even figuring in the “YES!” factor.

The Treatment

Is it possible that Maynard is getting the Yushin Okami treatment here? Hopefully, Gray gets the winner of Penn/Florian and Sanchez.

by MMAMoneyLine on Jul 1, 2009 4:28 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t think Maynard wants to fight for the title yet, I see to remember him saying something about needing more fight experience.

That’s the fight I have in mind, I think this is not BJ’s year, I even think he will play in never surrender 2 this year.

by spectaa on Jul 1, 2009 9:07 PM EDT up reply actions

that is what i thought

i mean a rematch between florian and sanchez would be the most logical and exciting. i do agree with proflex up above in questioning sanchez’s title shot, but whatever, i mean shogun is fighting machida, so i guess the rankings and rules get thrown right out the dana white doorway.
i like Penn, but i would want florian to win to see him fight sanchez.

good luck in life!

by georgehouse on Jul 1, 2009 10:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Ranking getting thrown out the door?

First off GSP has average standup, now Shogun fighting Machida is a travesty? Sigh…

This argument has been rehashed too many times. This is where it finishes:
LHW #2,3 & 4 are all booked and they then pitted the #5 against the champ. Nothing to cry over there.
Would you prefer that Machida fights no-one? Rampage TURNED DOWN THE SHOT remember. Rashad just got KTFO and Forrest is fighting Silva, and also hasn’t fought since losing the title.
It is just such a bad example to use of someone getting a title shot ‘undeservedly’.

Are you still waiting for Maynard to get his shot or what?

"I'm AJB and I endorse this nut-puncher."

by AJB on Jul 1, 2009 6:24 PM EDT up reply actions

um

Kenflo is getting his SECOND LW title shot right now, and the two best guys he beat on his current run were Joe Stevenson and Roger Huerta. Sanchez already beat Stevenson and Guida at 155, AND owns a win over Kenflo.

I do think Gray Maynard as the product of the whole Maynard / Griffin / Edgar / Sherk set of matchups should be right there as well, but you can’t be ok with Florian getting his shot (not that you did necessarily say it, but cmon, Kenny is due) and say Diego isn’t deserving by the very same grounds.

by LBo on Jul 1, 2009 7:10 PM EDT reply actions

MMA math

is a strange thing at best. Just because Sanchez holds a win over Kenflo, it has no bearing on the current situation. That win was four years ago, in a completely different weight class, with two completely different fighters. If Sanchez is so deserving of a title shot, why didn’t he get one in the weight class that he was in before he stepped down a weight class? I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, and you can hate me if you want for saying because I don’t care. Sanchez couldn’t hang with the elite of the WW division so he had to drop a weight class to try and get a shot at the LW title, it’s either that or he’s waiting for the top two, GSP and Alves to retire because he knows he can’t beat either of them. On another point from your comment, if Sanchez took on and beat Huerta before getting a shot at the title, I would have no problem with him getting his title shot, but regardless of how he fought in his last two, Sanchez still only won by decision, and neither were all that impressive.

by proflex on Jul 1, 2009 8:40 PM EDT up reply actions

No…I think he deserves it in a combination of “charisma” (read strong personality) and his last IMPRESSIVE PERFORMANCE against clay guida.

sanchez should get the loser of Penn/Florian. or at least fight maynard for a title shot.

good luck in life!

by georgehouse on Jul 1, 2009 10:10 PM EDT reply actions

So we wait even longer for a title fight?

Why not just give Diego the title shot, and then Maynard can get the next one after another fight for experience, which is what he wants.

Better to have title fights than the champ sitting around for years waiting for a clear cut number one contender in such a messy division (By messy I mean where so many people have beaten each other)
