Quote of the Day: UFC 100 Smack Talk, Frank Mir Can't Get Cocky About Brock Lesnar, or Can He?

"Anybody that size that gets behind a punch and sits down on it can catch me on the chin. If I'm cocky and put my hands down, obviously it will be a short night for me and I can go home and cry about it later.
"The fighter I was then compared to the fighter I am now is leaps and bounds. "If he chooses to stand up, I'll knock him out. If he chooses to take me down, I'll submit him."

This is from the video right?
Does anyone believe that Mir will KO him? ..even those big fans of Mir tthat ive talked to thinks that Mir will win by sub, not by KO..
if he fights like he did against Big Nog
I wouldn’t put anything past him. Lesnar’s got insane reach and power but isn’t exactly a polished striker. I could see Lesnar not wanting to take the fight to the ground out of respect for Frank’s grappling and maybe just maybe Frank putting a Ken Hahn clinic on him. I also will be picking Brock to win. : )

Lesnar isn’t polished, but he’s good at the basics. And when you’ve got the reach he does, the huge fists he has, and the power he has, just having a good 1-2 serves Lesnar well. He’s dropped Mir, Herring, and Couture already, and I highly doubt Mir will want to stand with Lesnar in this fight.
I think Lesnar just has way too much of a size advantage over Mir to be knocked out standing up. Maybe if Mir was some phenomenal striker he could, but he isn’t. I would say the best option for Mir is to attempt to take it to the ground and go for a submission. I’m predicting a Lesnar victory though.
how the heck
is Mir going to take Lesnar down. Talk about a bad idea. Lesnar is a NCAA national champion wrestler, Mir was a Nevada High School state champ. No comparison.

Mir’s insane if he allows Brock into his guard.

Not to mention, Lesnar could slam Mir through the mat if Mir doesn’t immediately get him down.

Yeah, because a strong wrestling background doesn’t correlate into success in MMA…
Wait a minute, that’s exactly what it does!

Brock has a great wrestling career while Mir had a decent wrestling career.
Mir has an Amazing BJJ game while Brock has well nothing.
advantage Mir
World class wrestling can negate BJJ. See Hughes/Gracie.
Lesnar has already escaped one Mir submission attempt, I’m sure we’ll see a few more next Saturday.

It’s possible but I am taking Frank by SUB but Kid Nate could be right that Lesnar could not want to take it to the ground. Also did Frank only train with Dellagrotte one week?
Has Brock even been hit in the face clean yet except for like one strike in the Couture fight at the end of the first round that I can think of?
fightlockdown.com
i hope your right ^
I really wouldnt be surprised to see brock get picked apart standing. Still picking Mir by SUB
I think we’ve said pretty much everything about Mir, his confidence, cockyness, gameplan, mind game and real chances in the octagon against the beast, now I only want to see both men in the cage, cause I can’t speculate anymore :p.
^this
come on already! isn’t it the 11th yet??? :(
I'm the kind of girl who loves to watch a GOOD fight!

Can I get some of what Mir is smoking?
Cause I think he’s getting high as a kite before watching tapes of their first fight. Sorry Franky… the Lesnar you will fight is “leaps and bounds” ahead of the on you got a chance kneebar on. You took 2 rounds to KO an anemic Nog that a real striker would have take out in Round 1. At this point in Mir’s career, there just isn’t room for massive improvement, while every fight will make Lesnar better.
I think Mir will get land what he thinks is a power shot, Brock will laugh in his face and then fold Mir like a towel with a sloppy straight right.
Wow, someone I can agree with
finally, a lot of people on here seem to have been putting too much credence in Mir’s shot to Big Nog then is deserved, the man was gassed, and got caught with a punch, it’s not like Mir KO’d him. As for Mir’s striking, he might be more technical, but he sure as hell doesn’t have that much power behind them. Yes I’ll agree that Mir is experienced and is great at BJJ, but the only reason he won the first fight was because the ref stood them up after one or two blows to the back of the head. Yes illegal hits, but never has that happened before, not even a warning, just stand them up and let Mir recover, Mir is lucky that those two shots didn’t land on the side of his head, if they had, that fight would have been over withing seconds, but instead we have the bullshit that is the win over Lesnar. If Mir gets hit with the same punch that shattered Herrings orbital bone, Mir is going to sleep, or won’t recover until the ref pulls Lesnar off of him.
Brock Lesnar punches hard, but he doesn’t punch good.
Most bodybuilder types don’t have very good technique when it comes to throwing punches, and just can’t get the angles to deliver knockout punches, because of their girth. They just don’t seem to be able to turn their punches over. I’m not at all saying that Brock can’t hurt the shit out of someone when he punches them, but I don’t ever see him becoming a KO artist.
Brock Lesnar has zero KO’s. Also, show me another fighter with Brock’s body type who has multiple KO’s on their record. You probably won’t find any, for the reason stated above. Brock might definitely TKO Frank. But I don’t see him putting him to sleep.

Exactly.
And Lesnar doesn’t have a bodybuilder physique. He’s huge and muscular, but he’s conditioned himself in sport specific training. Everything about Lesnar’s physique and conditioning is functional as it pertains to being successful in MMA
When I wrote bodybuilder type, I meant “hulking mass of muscle”.

Ugh.
I think I sunk myself with that comment.
The only others I could think of off the top of my head are Bob Sapp, Bobby Lashly, Mark Kerr, Old Josh Barnett,
Can anyone help me out? Who are some other “hulking masses of muscle” who compete in MMA?

Any more?

Lesnar isn’t a “hulking mass of muscle” the way guys like Randleman, Sapp, or Monson are. Lesnar is certainly muscular, but the main reason he’s so goddamn huge is because he has the wingspan of a pterodactyl. I can’t think of anybody else in the sport with his frame.
The point I was trying to make is that when your arms get too huge, it hinders your ability to turn over your punches. That and the wingspan is why I don’t think he’ll ever become a KO artist.
I think that’s why we never see any uber-buff heavyweight boxing champions.

Sean Sherk
is the equivalent of Lesnar at LW.
At WW I’d say Matt Hughes is the closest.
A chance kneebar?
Come on man, give the guy some credit! He pulled off a sick kneebar while being pounded on by Brock’s freakin’ 4XL mitts, and you still down the guy?
If he could pull off a submission under that kind of pressure back then, what makes you think he’s so doomed now? After all, he was already a better MMArtist than Brock back then, and he’s had just as much time to improve his game as Brock had since their last fight. Also, now he’s felt Brock’s power, know’s what to expect, and will be fighting this fight much more strategically.
Mir by RNC or armbar from guard in the later rounds.

I never thought I'd say this
but I have to agree with you, it wasn’t a chance knee bar, but if memory serves me correct, Mir wasn’t taking shots at the time of the attempt, but I could be wrong.
C’mon, man. Unlikely? Sure. Impossible? You should have seen enough MMA by now to know that nothing is impossible.

I think Brock Lesnar submitting Frank Mir is on the same level of probability.
Of course, I can parse ‘here’ to mean ‘this thread’ if fucking lightening strikes, but I am literally that confident that Brock Lesnar will not be KO’ed by Frank Mir – remember, Mir didn’t KO Nog, he TKO’ed him.

Ahh man
it brings a tear to my eye to see people on here seeing the light, and please subo, don’t stop commenting, we all know that Mir isn’t going to KO Lesnar, well unless Lesnar just stands their and sticks his chin way out, and Mir hits him with a sledge hammer.
You can light your ‘Mir Please KO Brock’ candles now

Still at it are you?
I passed up two additional chances to correct your spelling, maybe I should have pointed those out to you as well. It takes quite a few key strokes and button clicks to create a response like that, so your old “I can’t help myself” excuse doesn’t really hold up that well….don’t you have anything better to do?
I think Lesnar is going to run out and land an over hand hammerfist (donkeykong style) to the top of Mirs head and he is going to crush up like a beer can on a Sunday morning cartoon! Oh that statment was driping with sarcasm could you tell? However Lesnar is a beast— truley— Mir just has to much experience in all areas.
People always talk about Mir taking Brock down, but they forget that you don’t have to take someone down to submit them Lesnar won’t be safe anywhere with Mir in the rematch.
Except for when he’s in side control pounding away.
by Derek Suboticki on Jul 1, 2009 6:16 PM EDT up reply actions
Yup,
If Brock gets side control, I feel bad for Frank (not literally, but…). I don’t know about y’all, but I think side control is better than mount. Easier to control your opponent, and not too easy to get a sweep from if you’re on bottom.

I know this is waaaay off topic, so ignore if y’all want, but when did the " ^this" thing become popular, and where is it from? I’ve only started seeing it recently and was just curious. :)
