Strikeforce Spotlight: Nick Diaz's Impressive Boxing Clinic

3606975445_01a7e1ce66_mediumSaturday's Strikeforce event from the Scottrade Center in St. Louis could easily be considered a success. Of the five main card fights, three of the matchups ended via a finish while one of the two decision bouts was surprisingly entertaining. The lone hiccup on the card was the matchup between Kevin Randleman and Mike Whitehead in which both fighters showed very little or no striking acumen, and Kevin Randleman looked like a tiny shell of his fomer self.

While many of the evening's matchups produced surprising results, Nick Diaz's boxing clinic on Scott Smith's face was one of the more impressive displays of using peppering jabs to set up huge blows. Interestingly enough, some fans complained about Diaz's gameplan going into past fights in which he tried to implement the same type of gameplan. Matchups with KJ Noons and Mike Aina proved to be much tougher than Diaz had anticipated, but the Aina fight was a mixed reaction from fans. We heard a lot of fans talking about Diaz's inability to finish a lower echelon fighter like Aina, and Diaz's odd gameplan of peppering Aina with solid jabs. The problem was that some fans believed Diaz could have simply taken it to the ground repeatedly and won, or tried to wind up some bigger blows to crumple Aina early in the fight.

In retrospect, Aina may have simply had a much better chin, or Diaz needed to continue honing his skills. In any case, we are beginning to see a Nick Diaz that is evolving in his striking game. His defense is improving, but the improvement in his overall IQ on his feet is very underestimated. In his last two fights, his bread and butter has come from the incredibly effective combinations of stiff jabs, hooks, and gut-busting strikes. In the Smith fight, the combinations of left-right combos coupled with heavy gut shots completely frustrated and broke down Scott Smith.

The difference between a Nick Diaz a few years ago and a Nick Diaz of today is that Diaz was able to dodge those huge overhands with ease while he was actually caught by those punches in the past. Chalk that up to better defense, speedy hands, and a continued onslaught of punches that have opponents wondering how they can even risk trying to throw a haymaker.

The other impressive feat of the evening came with the Compustrike stats. Diaz threw 397 punches over the course of the entire matchup, landing 52% (207) of his strikes. Smith only threw 93 total strikes, landing 33% (31) of his strikes. In the second round, it was indicated that Diaz threw potentially over 220+ strikes within the round. This is unbelievable for a mixed martial artist, and it goes to show that Diaz's conditioning to continue the barrage of blows throughout the fight is astounding. Not only was Smith seeing a flurry of punches for most of the fight, but Diaz was essentially hitting him with every other punch accurately.

As our own Michael Rome wrote earlier this weekend, the UFC needs to sign Nick Diaz when the chance comes up. At only 25 years of age, Diaz has a lot of time to continue evolving. He has the abrasive personality to create hype for his matchups, and he has the skills to compete with the top welterweights in the world. Diaz's boxing clinic on Scott Smith was just another reason why fans should want to see more of Nick Diaz.

Nick Diaz' boxing is awful

Scott Smith just plays the role of a "target’ really well. Give credit where credit is due.

Boxing in MMA is flat out tough to do, and Diaz did it efficiently. The combinations were very effective in breaking down Smith. While he isn’t a world class boxer, Diaz managed to use technical boxing in the framework of MMA to completely destroy Shamrock and Smith.

Do you have any gifs of this technical boxing? Because in the one above, he’s swinging from his waist.

Nick Diaz’ boxing is awful

Nick Diaz’ boxing for MMA is a thing of beauty and just plain frustrates guys. He’s so comfortable out there it looks like he doesnt even give anything a second thought. That is what you call skill and confidence.

A thing of beauty?

His form is god awful. The body shots he was throwing were some of the worst I’ve seen. Its like he was slapping Smith’s body with a clenched fist. Just because he was able to land a great deal of punches in a very sloppy way against a guy who’s defense was horrible to begin with….. I would not put him up there in the likes Ali and Floyd Mayweather. Boxing for MMA or not, those punches were sloppy and he could have finished the fight a hell of a lot sooner if he had used some proper form and actually land some punches with his knuckles and not with throw punches palm side first.

So you honestly look at that GIF up there and can say that Nick Diaz put on a “boxing clinic”?

What was shown in that fight was that Nick Diaz has great stamina and he knows how to smother his opponent and finish a fight. Nick Diaz did great work in doing what he needed to win that fight but saying that he put on a boxing clinic is a huge stretch.

The gif above is only one flurry, and it’s toward the end when Smith is completely done. Over the course of the fight, he was pretty impressive.

Most people forget that boxers NEVER have to worry about kicks or takedowns. Diaz did all this damage within the concept that he could be kicked in the leg as Smith did on a few occassions and potentially taken down, although that’d be a stretch because Diaz is better on the floor.

If we were comparing BOXING to Nick Diaz’s BOXING, it’d be a different comparison and completely ridiculous to do so.

Seemed to handle the fight pretty well to me. I’m not knocking Nick Diaz’s performance, he did a great job…. I’m just saying that I wouldn’t call what he did a boxing clinic… thats it.

I just disagree…. that boxing wasn’t great…. it could be more effective.

Like I already said, see Rampage and Rashad Evans.

It seems people value power more than anything else these days. Diaz throws pretty princess pillow punches, but he makes contact (which is, I’m pretty sure, the whole point of boxing anyway) and keeps people at bay. It’s quite effective.

The thing it is hard for most boxing fan to appreciate arm punches… just like it is hard for most MMA fans to appreciate the art of counterpunching from like a guy like Mayweather or Hopkins.

I still find it hard to appreciate boxing element in MMA but know that there is a reason why we see so much arm punching because there are many other things that MMA fighters have to be acutely aware of during a fight.

"Boxing is dirty," said Casamayor. " The day I’m not ready to be a dirty fighter is the day I don’t fight anymore because it will mean that I have no heart for it anymore."

Then say he has good, unorthodox "striking."

The word “boxing” means “boxing,” and when you say somebody does it well, if that person doesn’t, you should expect to be called out on it.

I agree that Diaz’s boxing is awful. It works against guys like Shamrock and Smith who are not good strikers even by MMA standards.

KJ Noons proves this article wrong. He is a competent but not world class boxer, and he showed how bad Diaz’s boxnig skills are. Do people already forget that fight?

by AlwaysRelaxing on Jun 8, 2009 11:59 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Diaz looked like shit overall in both the Noons and Aina fight IMO. He looks improved to me, so I’m not going to sit around saying he’s awful because of those fights.

He looked awful in the Noons fight because his boxing style is completely uneffective against good straight punches like Noons throws. The same thing would happen in a rematch. The same thing would happen if he fought GSP, Alves, Davis, or other competant MMA strikers.

He looked awful because he had to cut to an unhealthy weight and lacked any of the speed that allows him to slip punches.

All that Nick Diaz proved was that he has a great gas tank and has the stamina to throw a barrage of punches at will without letting up….. despite that…. by no means what he did Saturday night should be considered a “boxing clinic”. If he did anything, he showed how not to box.

Take his cardio, put in some real ability to throw punches….. Nick Diaz could be one of the best and scariest fighters around.

The idea that the Diazes box well is one of the biggest myths of the sport. Low hands, pitty-pat punches that they don’t sit on …

Nick has strung together a couple of nice wins, but to suggest it’s because of his boxing rather than in spite of it is ludicrous.

So do you think we will see more fighters employing the Zombie Stance in the future? How would this stand up to a skilled traditional boxer?

Lyoto and other guys with speed seem to pull off a traditional stance. Guys who do other toolsbesides sprawling at take down attempts.

The Zombie stance is pretty effective for one reason. Fighters look at Diaz in the stance, know he’s trying to clown them, but the big problem is that he’s LOOKING for you to come at him. When you do, he dodges and throws.

Scott Smith landed some good inside leg kicks that got Nick off balanced. He should have followed those up with some punches.

"Because I rode in here on my fucking Thunderhorse and handled business."

by skeed on Jun 8, 2009 11:38 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

That would have worked if Smith had any sort of gameplan.

From the start of the fight it looked like his gameplan was to ko diaz with 1 punch. He never came close to put any sort of combination together.

1 punch KO’s can be entertaining, but it’s a pretty stupid to go into a fight with that being you only strategy to win the fight.

by Phildo on Jun 8, 2009 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah. Nick would literally pause for a second or two with his hands down every time he got hit with a good inside leg kick.

He was good in his last fight, but here he was just unloading on a different level. However, on second viewing Scott Smith just wasn’t defending properly. I think he’s more of a brawler than anything. While Nick was impressive, I think he looked so good because Scott looked so bad as well. Maybe a little of both.

Surprised there was no mention of Nicks boxing improving as he has moved UP in weight.

His punching power was pretty awful vs Aina and Noons, but coming in at 180+ against Shamrock and Smith and now he is picking people apart with the same style and combinations.

I think Diaz should not bother with 170, as he’s looked his best at 180+.

by DirtyML on Jun 8, 2009 1:50 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I believe both the Aina and Noons fights were at 160.

I don’t think he’s large enough to hang with the cream of the crop at 180+, but I’d certainly like to see how he stacks up within the UFC’s welterweight division (170).

by Estrada on Jun 8, 2009 2:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Alves...ouch.

I just can’t see that pitty pat style doing well against some of the top UFC welterweights.

by Razreshat on Jun 8, 2009 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t think he’d be able to hang with the UFC’s top 3 at WW (GSP, Alves, and Fitch), and would probably have a lot of trouble with a number of other tough WW’s in the UFC—but on the other hand the fights would most likely be entertaining and intriguing. Basically I’m in agreement with Rome’s article where he says that the UFC should try to sign him (as well as Shields).

by Estrada on Jun 8, 2009 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Diaz is a bum. He couldn’t make it in the UFC, Freakin Diego Sanchez beat him for Pete’s sake!!!!!!!!! And he even admitted to not being a welterweight. I think he’s fighting in strikeforce because he likes being a bigger fish in a small pond. Most of the guys in Strikeforce are UFC has-beens. Nick Diaz sucks, he couldn’t beat any of the top 6 or 7 guys in the UFC ww division. Maybe not anyone in the UFC top 10. I think even the lower top 10 guys like Hughes , Serra, Kampman or Koscheck would all beat him.
