See, The UFC Does Too Help Smaller Organizations
I'm sick and tired of the notion that the Major Leagues of MMA (who could I possibly mean), in any way, shape or form, harm smaller organizations - when everybody does better, everybody does better. Want proof? Strikeforce's card was absolutely lousy with UFC veterans last night. Jake Shields, Mike Whitehead and Brett Rogers have never fought in the UFC. As for the other 780% of their main card:
Arlovski (9-4 in UFC before deciding to leave. Good call not paying him big bucks, Dana.)
Lawler (4-3 in the UFC, 1-3 in his last four with org)
Diaz (4-4, lost last three)
Smith (1-3, only win against Pete Sell)
Randleman (4-3, last fought there in 2002)
Riggs (3-4. got kneed in the face by Diego Sanchez)
Baroni (2-5, lost last four)
Whitehead (0-1, loss to Jardine, lost TUF 2 – credit to who me)
These guys took the celebrity, credibility and quality wins they got in the UFC and used them to basically make a main card for Strikeforce. Don't tell me being in the UFC hurt these guys or that the UFC's humongous popularity did anything but benefit Strikeforce in this case.

Good piece.
Guys who fought a few times in the UFC with only moderate success can also headline and draw crowds for non-televised regional shows.

And, whilst drawing that desperately needed extra attention to those shows, provide a valuable service in testing prospects before they reach the big time.

Mike Whitehead fought Keith Jardine at UFC 57. He was also on TUF 2 (although I wouldn’t say that was good for his career). Only two of the guys on that card weren’t UFC vets.

4 of the 8 men on the main card of Strikeforce: Shamrock vs. Diaz show had UFC experience (obviously the two women didn’t). Strikeforce: Destruction had 7 out of the 10 men on the main card with UFC experience.

All told, these guys went a combined 27-27 in the UFC.

How about Pulver, Varner, Razor, Manny, Garcia, etc.
Its also helping out the WEC as well as everyone else.

Four of the five guys you mentioned cut to 145 because they were too small for 155.

I think it’s three actually.

You’re right, Varner is 155 – but he or Cerrone will probably get the call to the UFC after their fight. Varner went 1-1 and went into the WEC coming off of a win.

The exposure helps the fighters and the orgs that they fight for across the board.

Isn’t this an old conversation that we all agreed on already?

That the UFC is good for MMA? You’d think so, wouldn’t you?

The fact that question was even asked is astounding.

The center of the universe tastes like raspberries and smells like rum, Johnny Depp is going to play John Dillinger in a movie and I just watched an amazing card of MMA. Today was a good day.

Depp will also be the Mad Hatter in Burton’s Alice in Wonderland.

After the debacle that was Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, I’m going to wait and see on that one.

Yep – it’ll probably be more American McGee’s Alice than Carroll’s, though – being a hardcore nerd largely self-taught in logic, I find that supremely discouraging. Carroll was a mathematician, dammit!

True, but American McGee had a very modernized vision for the game (game was not good, idea was great). I think it will work out great. The only down side is that they didn’t get Sarah Michelle Gellar to play Alice. She owns the rights to the original version but just hasn’t been able to get funding for it. I think she would have been great. She can be rather dark when she needs to be.

Watching Sarah Michelle Gellar on screen makes my eyes try to stab themselves. I love the concept that you’re discussing, but I think she’d ruin it (or anything else). Why not go with an actual YOUNGER actress, like Dakota Fanning or someone of that age range?

They have a 19y old playing her, as it’s Alice returning to Wonderland. Stephan Fry is the Cheshire Cat, Alan Rickman is the Caterpillar, HBC is Red Queen, and Anne Hathaway as White Queen.

All of whom I cannot disagree with. Brilliant casting, especially Fry and Rickman who are two of my favourites.
Wait, who is HBC?

Even better, Johnny Depp is going to play John Dillinger in a movie directed by Michael Mann.

Wait second Subo
These guys also lent their credibility and popularity to UFC at one point too. A number of the guys on this card were in the UFC when it was trying to build itself into something and UFC couldn’t do it without fighters.

I think Randleman’s the only guy that was with them during the Dark Ages, but I grant your premise – it’s a mutually beneficial relationship. Hell, if you ask most of them, they’ll say they enjoyed working with the UFC and won’t deny the possibility (or in many cases the naked ambition) of doing it again. It’s the guys online that you see shouting ‘the UFC is bad for the sport!’ that get me.
