Brett Rogers, Jake Shields Talk Strikeforce Wins
Rogers: I'm gonna be mad ready for [Strikeforce heavyweight champ Alistair Overeem]. I felt that I shoulda had my belt today, but hey... It's like this: he's just makin' it worse for himself. So, uh, August whatever, Alistair, be ready to hand it over, baby, 'cause I'm comin' for it.
Shields: [Robbie Lawler] kinda, like, pulled his head down, I don't know exactly what happened, I was kinda, you know-- submission, you get caught up in the moment. And then, once I got [the guillotine] on, I had it pretty tight, felt it locking in. And then he actually picked me up and started shaking, and it almost slipped, but then I kinda came and I re-cinched it. At that point, he went to pick me up, I could tell he was about to slam me, but I think he realized at that point that a slam would only tighten the guillotine. So he decided just to put me down and tap out.

I wasn’t shocked that Arlovski got KO’d, but I was definitely surprised he got creamed as fast as he did. Talk about getting bumrushed! I don’t know what Arlovski is gonna do, but that chin of his is a career killer. I don’t know if he’s gotta work on his defense or what, but he’s gotta fix some other things cause he can’t fix that chin of his.
Shields’ stand-up looked borderline embarrassing last night, so stiff and uncomfortable. But man did he capitalize on that silly mistake of Robbie’s. Good stuff. I was definitely surprised. When Shields couldn’t take him down, I figured the fight was over for him. Guess I was wrong :)
I love me some Sexyama!
My thoughts exactly
1. Poor Arlovski, reminds me GSP vs. Serra 1.
2. Shields has ZERO stand up. His ground game obviously makes up for that but it is an obcious chink in his armor.
Some would compare Shields to Maia but...........
I personally feel that Maia has fought tougher competition than Shields, and I also feel that Maia has the best BJJ in MMA. It is just one of those things where Shields really NEEDS to fight in the UFC to see how good he really is. I would like to see Jake Shields vs Dustin Hazelett personally.
AAs chin is not really the problem, it is his defense of the big punch. I don’t know many people who could have taken those big shots from Rogers, who is 260 pounds, and not gone out. AA moves straight back when he is in defensive, never moves side to side or moves his head. If you take the big punches like that, especially at heavyweight, you are going out.
I don’t think shields stand up looked great, but i didn’t think it was terrible. He was landing kicks at will. He moved in and out and never really absorbed any damage from robbie’s standup.

These “UFC has beens and scrub fighters” need a place to fight. Obviously, not every fighter is going to be a UFC caliber fighter. Give Strikeforce a break because no one can nor should expect them to have the very best fighters out there. Pretty much, Strikeforce is not the UFC, but they try to do the best with what they have.
