Live Results and Commentary - Strikeforce: Robbie Lawler vs. Jake Shields

2075570923_9d786f6590_medium

As with every major show we'll be here to bring you live results and commentary for Strikeforce: Robbie Lawler vs. Jake Shields.  The live blog will start with the beginning of the Showtime broadcast so make sure to make Bloody Elbow your home for this event.

So, join me for the show and share your thoughts as the event unfolds.

Broadcast has started.  Here we go.

Mike Whitehead vs. Kevin Randleman - Round 1 -Whitehead with 4 inside leg kicks, make it 5.  Takedown by Randleman now and he has Whitehead's back but lets him stand back up.  Back to the leg kicks by Mike.  Whitehead with the takedown now and Randleman with an elevator to get back to standing. Kevin is looking a little bit gassed.  Another takedown by Whitehead but Randleman reverses.  Yet another takedown by Whitehead and Randleman just looks old.  He's still got some strength but this isn't THE Kevin Randleman of old.  Kevin back to standing and Whitehead has a little blood around his right eye.  Mike landing some shots on the feet now including some uppercuts.  And another takedown by Whitehead and the round ends with him on top.  clearly a 10-9 round for Whitehead.  Round 2 - Right hand lands for Whitehead and Randleman is hurt a little bit.  Clash of heads as Whitehead gets a takedown.  Into half guard.  Crossface by Whitehead now as he keeps trying to pass and finally gets side control.  Working some body shots now but not doing a lot wiith the position.  WHitehead almost finishes him with a forearm choke but then moves to mount but Randleman explodes up.  they're just circling throwing tired arm punches.  10-9 for Whitehead because he didn't actually do anything to make it 10-8.  Round 3 - Overhand right by Randleman and it caughte Whitehead's attention but didn't really do much but Kevin looks motivated.  Right hand by Whitehead now.  Right hand by Randleman and Whitehead is down!  Kevin with hammerfists but can't finish and Mike stands back up. They're both pretty exhausted now and it's all arm punches.  Nice jab now by Kevin and a double-leg by Whitehead with 2 minutes left.  Kevin gets to his feet nowwith 40 second left.  RIght hand by Whitehead rocks him.  the round ends and I'd go 10-9 Randleman for the knockdown making the fight 29-28 on my card.  Official Scorecards: 29-28 across the board for Mike Whitehead.  Mike Whitehead wins by unanimous decision.

Phil Baroni vs. Joe Riggs - Round 1 -Takedown by Riggs and he takes his back.  but Baroni survives and now it's back to side control.  Back to taking his back, then side control, landing punches along the way.  Baroni stands up and gets taken back down, and then the same thing again.  Baroni is on top now after Riggs gives up on a takedown and pulls guard.  Body work by Phil now.  Big John stands them up even though Baroni was punching constantly.  Riggs goes for a takedown and ends up on bottom again.  The round ends and it was 10-9 Riggs on my card for "positional dominance."  Round 2 - Baroni is stalking.  Left hand by Riggs and a leg kick follow up.  Riggs is looking quicker on the feet.  Superman punch followed by a takedown for Riggs.  Baroni stands back up and ends up in Riggs' guard.  Baroni is sucking wind BADLY. (shocker!)  Big knee by Riggs and now a big right hand.  Single leg by Riggs but he can't finish, Baroni tries for the single now and it was even less successful. Baroni kind of...flops for a shot but does eventually end up getting on top as Riggs pulls guard.  Triangle is deep for Riggs now but as he lands a punch to Phil's head it pops Baroni out.  The round ends and it was a pretty one sided round for Riggs, 10-9.  Round 3 - They touch gloves to start the round.  RESPECT!  HONOR!  I hate MMA sometimes.  Riggs landing some big shots on a gassed Baroni.  Spinning heel kick to the ribs lands now.  Baroni is just walking around trying to suck in more air than anyone has ever sucked in before.  Baroni is just getting eaten alive here. Body kick now.  Knee and two punches from Riggs and they all land solid.  Baroni is swelling up and walking away and getting hit with anything Joe feels like throwing.  Right hand from Phil now and Riggs just takes him down for the last 10 seconds.  10-8 round easily for Riggs to make it 30-26.  Official Scorecards: 30-27 across the board.  Joe Riggs wins by unanimous decision.

Nick Diaz vs. Scott Smith - Round 1 - Diaz with his usual "wide stance" and landing a few peppering shots.  Smith with the power shots but isn't landing yet.  More peppering strikes and Smith is trying to figure him out.  Bigger hots by Diaz now.  High kick, right hand hurts Smith.  Right hand by Smith lands hard, and another but he gets hit in return with that one.  Diaz sticks his chin out and then eats a right hand.  Smith had Diaz's back standing so Diaz is working for the kimura.  Takedown by Smith and he stands back up.  Smith is landing a little more now.  Diaz is landing more often but his game is to eat 6 punches to land 1 so he is playing his style.  A few more shots from Smith and Diaz didn't like it and gets a takedown to end the round.  10-9 Diaz on my card.  Round 2 - A bunch of flurries from Diaz and again they go to Smith having DIaz's back standing.  Smith with a right hand now that lands hard to the side of Nick's head.  Body shot hurts Smith but he fires back.  Diaz is cut below his eye. Diaz is landing a ton of punches and Smith fires back with a big right.  The body shots are the ones that are money for Nick.  Smith with an elbow in return.  More flurries from Diaz and Smith with a shot and JUST misses a huge head kick.  Diaz with three head kicks but nothing too solid.  Superman punch by Smith lands and now Diaz is landing again.  Body shot and Smith is on the ground as the round ends.  Round 3 - Smith comes out aggressive.  Body shot hurts Smith again and he just falls down.  Diaz is looking for a rear naked now as he takes his back.  The choke is in and Smith taps out.  Diaz kicks Smith off of him after the fight.   Whatever...  Nick Diaz wins by Submission (rear naked choke), round 3.

Diaz takes shots at Smith's training partners.  I'm sorry but I can't stand him.  Talks crap about people and says "I don't want to talk bad about people."

Andrei Arlovski vs. Brett Rogers - Round 1 - ROGERS KNOCKED HIM OUT!  20 SECONDS!  Arlovski's chin fails again!  Brett Rogers!  WHOO!  Brett Rogers wins by KO, round 1!

Jake Shields vs. Robbie Lawler - Round 1 -Rght hands from Lawler and kicks from Shields and now a single leg and Lawler defends well.  Now landing so me shots on Lawler.  Lawler sticks his head right into a guillotine and Lawler has to tap out!  Wow!  Lawler just GAVE him his neck.  Jake Shields wins by submission (guillotine choke), round 1.

Yeah it's weird.

The Japanese are usually so sensitive to such things; I cite the promotion of Sokoudjou.

I get to watch this card for free via strikeforce.com. I purchased the last one and there was a technical glitch where the feed dropped for about 10 minutes. I received an email a couple days ago stating that due to the unacceptable lapse in the entertainment feed, showtime would like to invite me to a free viewing of the upcoming stream for this card.

I thought that was pretty damn cool, considering I had a problem with a UFC event when they switched to Yahoo sports. I was unable to view the stream once the fight started, and sat in a chat with a technician who did nothing to help me except to tell me my computer was not up to par with current standards (it’s only a powerhouse multimedia PC less than a yr old, must be out of date huh?), and there was nothing they could do to help me. I requested my money back for the event, and they denied it. I’m still fighting them on that issue…bottom line is I’ll never purchase anything from yahoo sports again! When it was on UFC.com I watched multiple events without a hitch.

That is really sweet customer service.

There were a lot of problems with the Yahoo! stream at first for the UFC but it has gotten very solid lately (especially once they optimized it for Firefox). But I did have the same thing happen early on where my very powerful setup was “not up to par” with what was needed.

Well if they have better Firefox support now, maybe I’ll give them another try soon. I will have a cable or sat service soon so I shouldn’t even have to worry about it…but it’s good to know they’ve revamped things abit.

The thing that confused me about the whole thing was my ability to watch the test video stream with no problems at all, but when fight time came around…blank screen

Ah well, looking forward to a great night of fights!

See everyone here.

even if Rogers loses, he can still build himself back up. A lost to AA isn’t the end for The Grim. For AA though, a loss would be bad.

Which makes me question why AA would take this fight.

A win – Well…he was supposed to. Rogers hasn’t faced near the competition that AA would.
A loss – MMA stock falls down big time.

The Cult Fedor is out in full force. Arlovski was untouchable for 2.5 minutes before his chin failed him by one punch. Don’t rewrite history. The expression of Fedor’s face was priceless when every attack was nullified until one hail Mary punch. It was impressive at the time, but after what happened to AA last night, it wasn’t that impressive in retrospect.

But alas, Fedor is God, and any criticism must be destroyed by the Cult of Fedor. AA and Sylvia are good wins. But does anyone seriously believe these two are the two of the best heavyweights in the world right now? On paper, AA should have destroyed BR. Too bad he had to fight.

derp derp I guess lawler sucks!

by George Lucas on Jun 7, 2009 2:34 AM EDT up reply actions

And Lawler is that guy that killed Trigg right?

by MMASuPreMaCy on Jun 7, 2009 7:54 AM EDT up reply actions

I have more

business being in the UFC than Trigg. I know that if I kicked a guy in the balls I could finish him.

Trigg’s a pretty solid fighter (as is Lawler). He’s not elite by any stretch, but he’s definitely gatekeeper material.

Diaz

is looking very very impressive now that he shaved his skull. I think he would kill Le.
With his youth he will only get better, to bad he can’t attend a manners class.

I still have Shields at #4 WW. (GSP, Alves, Fitch above).

by Sokonojudo on Jun 7, 2009 12:25 AM EDT reply actions

I think that’s the highest he can be rated but I could see a lot of other UFC guys giving him trouble.

I dislike Matt Hughes.

you guys need to do a writeup on strikeforce tommarow: where do they go from here?
after tonite it makes it a little harder to promote smith or lawler..and im a huge arvloski fan but i dont think i will be anticipating anymore of his fights

Broadcast is over. The guy who was supposed to challenge Babalu and got undercarded lost to fucking Mike Kyle. Wtf.?? 3 major upsets on one card. Damn son.

“The final numbers had Diaz throwing 397 punches — and landing more than 50 percent of them. Think of E. Honda on weed and you have tonight’s performance in a nutshell.”

Quote is from MMAmania, does anyone know if this amount of punches/accuracy is a record for volume and accuracy throughout that much volume?

Also, first reply of predictions thread = “Don’t sleep on Rogers”. He certainly did not disappoint me. I can’t believe Freddie Roach has trained this guy at all, his head movement is worse than someone in a wheel chair. Great offensive footwork, awful defense and defensive footwork. Maybe it was just not his night, but it looked like he never had trained a day in his life the way he retreated.

I guess I should have transitioned Arlovskis name somewhere after “He certainly did not disappoint me”

Dunno if you can edit posts though, so you will figure it out, clever audience!

According to CompuStrike, Tyson Griffin held the record with most strikes thrown in one three-round fight with 332 against Sean Sherk. Sherk, ironically, is second on the list with 307 thrown strikes in the same fight. Griffin landed 113-of-332 (34.03%) while Sherk landed 132-of-307 (42.99%). Nick Diaz broke that record tonight. He also broke his own record which he set against Frank Shamrock. That record was most total strikes thrown by one fighter in any one round. He set that against Shamrock with 181 strikes thrown during their second round. He broke that in the second round against Smith tonight. I believe he also broke Michael Bisping’s record of most strikes landed by one fighter in any one round. Bisping held the record with 105 landed against Sinosic during the first round of their fight. I’m sure Diaz broke that, as well. Lastly, Roger Huerta holds the CompuStrike record with 141 landed strikes in a three-round fight which took place against Leonard Garcia. No doubt that Diaz broke that record.

Needless to say, Diaz basically made his own history.

To everyone who claims no head movement

There’s head movement before the engagement, there was head movement while he was backing up. He still got tagged. Small gloves+power meet chin = KO.

Brett paid it perfectly

He decided he wasn’t going to get picked apart in a technical battle – he figured if he was going to get tagged, it would be while trying to tag AA. Brawl a boxer – he did it right.

The biggest problem was Andrei dropping his hands when he threw the low kick

Too many people do this and it doesn’t really get capitalized on enough.

I just got back from the show and all I can say is I hope there is some footage of Mrs. Rogers’ “Fuck You St. Louis” dance, cause that had me absolutely rolling.
