During Cagewriter's chat with Cung Le, he said that due to his movie career, Strikeforce will soon introduce an interim belt at middleweight. Le has one movie, Pandorum, debuting in September, and is working on a few more film projects.
"I talked to Scott and he said he is going to do an interim belt very soon. I talked to him last week and it is going to happen after this fight."

I hope some of Cung Le's movies do well at least
would hate for him to be a might have been in MMA AND a flop in the movies.
"the spirit of your average dumbass with more overblown rhetoric" OR "the self-appointed savior of MMA"
I actually want to see Pandorum.

Strikeforce Championship Summary:
Heavyweight: No Title Fight Since 2007
Light Heavyweight: No Title Fight Since 2008. Champion Babalu won’t be able to defend title until late late 2009.
Middleweight: Champion Acting. Creating Interim Title
Welterweight: Vacant
Lightweight: Champion hurt, interim title created.
Featherweight: Vacant
Sorry state of affairs to say the least. Good fight card coming up, but they don’t have the ability to hold onto champions long term like the UFC does.

And that was in 2008. And now Babalu is fighting in Affliction in August. That title is on hold until at least late 2009.
And I wouldn’t say they are building their weight classes. All of these catch weight fights do very little to build contenders. Two fighters in the same weight class fighting each other, that builds contenders.

Is Cung Le some kind of MMA fighter? I’ve seen him in some movies.

No.
He just plays one in movies.

They should just strip him. It’s a mockery to the sport. Can you imagine if the defending Super Bowl champs refused to play the next season because they’d all decided to take up painting, and the winning team that year was labelled the “interm Super Bowl champions” because the ACTUAL champs hadn’t competed that year? It’s a stretch analogy, obviously (team sport vs. individual, one time vs. continuous championship), but I just can’t get behind this. Part of being champ is that you have to give the next guy a shot or you aren’t champ; you’re just a guy who won a fight.

Ninja edit!
And I’ll say, it’s different for things like injury where the champ wants to defend but can’t. Le is just simply choosing to not defend his belt. I can’t just choose not to hand in my reports at work because I’m moonlighting as an actor, and no one writes an interm report until I get mine done next year. If I break my hand and can’t type, yeah, I’ll get more time, but not just cause I’ve made a different job into a bigger priority.

Absolutely
I feel that if he’s not fighting anymore or training for a fight then he’s not the champ anymore. I have no problem with martial artists or fighters shooting movies, but a champion is someone who wanted to defend the Title of Best At The Weight Carved on My Belt. This is exactly why Dana wants to lock down Fedor. Someone who’s not committed to the Role of Champion shouldn’t be allowed near it.
He could do movies without it, but maybe a little guy like him isn’t too dramatic on screen compared to anyone besides Tom Cruise needs to milk our sport some more. Who knows? Maybe former one-time Strikeforce champ won’t get him as many meetings as UNDEFEATED MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPION. Maybe its something else entirely, but I doubt it.

This list is not that big. Coupled with the open contract style that most of these guys have and the lack of big names to pull people in, this is very weak. They have a handful of non-UFC washouts. Not that any of this prevents them from putting together great shows, but it makes it that much harder.
Also
Strikeforce doesn’t need a 100-200 man roster.
Thats just not smart business for them at the moment of their development.
Your response is pretty funny though.
I’ve seen everyone on this list fight, and they are quality fighters.
Maybe you are not acquainted with them as much.
I have seen them and they are not all that quality by my definition. Decent and I want to watch them some more. But not draws.
Where are the 179, 180, and 182lb divisions?

Someone please tell me what awesome movies I’m missing out on that Cung Le is in. If the man is getting paid good money then more power to him. But I wish he’d fight.
