A rumor from Golden Boy on the UG:

"I hear that all mma managers were informed that if any of their clients not currently under contract with the UFC..... sign to be a part of the EA game.......they will forever be banned for fighting in the UFC."

Ha, yeah rght. First of all Fedor will most likely be in the game. You think they will ban him from UFC if he ever decides to go there? Nope. Rumor fail.

Golden Boy’s pretty credible, and this doesn’t sound unlikely at all. I’m thinking true.

Sounds like a Zuffa statement to me.
=)

If they are that pissed, it means they know competition is coming.

Hmm, I never would have expected that type of reaction from you ;-)

No really, this is their motto. This started with the merchandising deal (video games and toys) and forced fighters to sign it or be kicked out of the UFC. Thats why they kicked Fitch out and AKA, until they reached an agreement. This is called strong arm tactic.

Food For Thought On This:
When asked about fighters such as UFC star Lyoto Machida, Moore added: “Machida? A great fighter. There’s plenty of great fighters that have their image rights, and we’ll start announcing fighters pretty soon.”

Although no official announcements of fighters for EA Sports MMA have been made, several leaks have indicated that top fighters not locked into the UFC are indeed stepping up and signing for Electronic Arts’ title, which is due out in 2010 and developed by EA Tiburon.

A tour schedule around E3 indicated that notable Russian fighter Fedor Emelianenko was taking place in a photoshoot for the EA title, alongside colleague Gegard Mousasi.

In addition, famous ex-UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia recently said in a radio interview that both he and notable former UFC star Randy Couture have signed up for the Electronic Arts game. None of these signings have yet been confirmed by Electronic Arts.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Jun 30, 2009 8:27 PM EDT reply actions

Isn’t Machida in Undisputed? How could he also be in the EA game?

by fly1180 on Jul 1, 2009 11:22 AM EDT up reply actions

Well, it is possible to not have signed your likeness away and be in both, but I am not 100% Machida did that. I wouldn’t hold my breath on Machida being in the EA game. Randy, Trigg, Sylvia, and Arlovski can be though.

Doesn’t sound like they’re interested in a WEC game…

Wasn’t it mmalogic who started that rumor?

I think it wasn’t a rumor, but a prediction.

Ken Pavi Says It's True:
It’s true. And they told me want the word out.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Jun 30, 2009 9:11 PM EDT reply actions

Wow, that takes some balls. I thought they were ballsey to so blatantly counter-program other MMA shows, but now they’re actually trying to take on EA Sports. Can’t help but think this is a mistake if true, not sure EA sports can be as easily bullied – the gaming industry is their home turf after all.

Another part of me thinks that maybe Zuffa is looking further ahead than I am. MMA being what it currently is, most fighters who become good enough will eventually end up in the UFC, where they’re fame will skyrocket. If EA has kept itself busy scooping up cheap prospects before they make it to the UFC they will be able to piggy back on the UFC marketing machine.

The plot thickens…

Agreed, while the UFC now has some video game clout thanks to the excellent Undisputed 2009, do they really want to poke the bear that is EA Sports, the company that can afford a billion dollar exclusive NFL license?

UFC uses strong arm tactics to screw with rivals!!!!!!!

This is SHOCKING! Absolutely SHOCKING!

Smart from a business perspective. Can’t blame them really.

by AlwaysRelaxing on Jun 30, 2009 11:58 PM EDT reply actions

Intelligent business would also be to to decrease fighter pay, increase ppv and ticket prices, prevent fighters/employers to create a union, don’t give your employers benefits, and maximize profit by eliminating all competitors, and eliminating everyone else that pisses you off or disagrees with you. Though this may maximize profits and make you tons of money, you have to admit it is pretty f’ed up.

edit don’t give employees

by MMASuPreMaCy on Jul 1, 2009 1:28 AM EDT up reply actions

This is untrue

Your logic would see every business try to pay their staff with used buttons, and aim for 10000000% profit on every sale.
It is obviously NOT good business or everyone would do this. Google ‘economics’ and the first paragraph on whatever random website comes up should be enough to explain this to you.

That said, I also see your point about some good business practises being immoral. The company itself must decide if goodwill and good working relationships are more important in certain situations than the ‘immoral’ strategy, To further your example about paying the fighters less money, if the pay is so low and no-one wants to fight for the UFC because of it, the UFC would dissapear very quickly. It would reduce their costs but kill the business.

FYI, I personally have an issue with signing image rights away for life. I think the exclusive image rights contract should be terminated when employment is terminated, however the UFC should still be able to use the fighters image from their time in the UFC in future games if they choose (In a ‘past fighter’ or ‘’hall of fame’ capacity). I have not read the contracts myself though, so there could be scope for this situation for all I know.

That was my point.

Amazing.

your dedication to anti-zuffa “informative” journalism is astounding. I don’t know why you put so much effort into actively denying your bias. lol.

I’m confused.

Counter viewpoints a critical in a good discussion

Even if they are biased, they contribute to any debate by forcing you to rethink what your position is, or at the very least why you have currently hold a certain point of view.
I love the UFC, but like to hear from the anti-zuffa contingent just to keep my opinions honest.

by Well Read Idiot on Jul 1, 2009 6:36 AM EDT up reply actions

Oh...

I don’t really care when Supremacy does it, he just denies it. lol. I actually find Supremacy to be much more entertaining than most anti-zuffa guys because of his approach, but it is obvious that outside … Subo is proud of his bias, I like that too.

by Loot on Jul 1, 2009 11:29 AM EDT up reply actions

It’s a really hard thing for others to understand. It’s easier for them to call me a Zuffa hater and dismiss what I write.

I do this for the love, not the money.
My real job pays me money.

Although, I find it funny that you guys are saying this about me (when I dont), yet that other guy is never mentioned (and he does). =)

by MMASuPreMaCy on Jul 1, 2009 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions

HAHA.. yea right.. banned right up to the point that the UFC wants to sign one of them then Dana will backtrack, say he respects the guy, and then sign his ass and get rid of him after he loses.

by Mirjitsu on Jul 1, 2009 8:16 AM EDT reply actions

I’m pretty sure that if the UFC continues this, they’re going to get slapped with an anti-trust lawsuit. It’s just a matter of time as the Zuffa tries to continually strong-arm competition. A free-market only works when competition is present.

by mhauer on Jul 1, 2009 10:40 AM EDT reply actions

I don’t think the UFC is approaching anti-trust territory at all. Just a legal perspectice, I’m not opining as to whether this is a good move or not.

by JSnowden on Jul 1, 2009 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions

Every fighters should sign the deal, just to fuck with dana’s mind (yeah I said dana instead of the UFC).
