UFC 100 Preview: Ladies and Gentlemen, Yoshihiro "Sexyama" Akiyama
UFC 100 will see the promotional debut of one of Zuffa's biggest ever MMA signings. The funny part is almost no one watching will care. Yoshihiro Akiyama is the definition of "big in Japan" and unlike Spinal Tap, he doesn't have a decade's worth of hits here statewide.
He's easily the most popular Japanese fighter to fight in the U.S. for an American promotion in the history of modern MMA. Dave Meltzer explains:
... Akiyama is, with the exception of only Kid Yamamoto, the biggest television ratings draw of Japanese MMA fighters, he is also hated in the country.
Akiyama has a strange dichotomy, because as much as he’s hated in Japan, he’s loved in South Korea, as the country’s current martial arts hero. At this point there are no plans to run live events in South Korea, but UFC does have television in that country and Akiyama on its roster greatly bolsters its standing.
As our own Luke Thomas said at the time of Akiyama's signing, this isn't about the U.S. audience. Akiyama is a Trojan Horse to help the UFC sneak into the Japanese market. He's also a huge draw in South Korea (we'll get to why in a minute), where the UFC has been making serious headway. If Akiyama can string together a series of wins and earn a title shot, don't be shocked if the UFC suddenly gets serious about putting on a show in South Korea or Japan.
Meltzer also worries that Akiyama has never recovered from a KO via illegal kick to the face:
After Akiyama was knocked out cold on December 31, 2007, by Kazuo Misaki, he has not been the same fighter. He is slower to react, which is the kiss of death against top competition. Fighting Entertainment Group, the promotion behind K-1 in Japan, was well aware of this, putting him against two non-fighters in his only matches this past year. Unless his reflexes suddenly snap back to pre-knockout levels, UFC is paying big money for a fighter who may very well be shot.
The UFC is putting that proposition to the test immediately. Rather than sheltering their big signing, they're throwing him in against Alan Belcher. Belcher is the kind of opponent managers hate. He's dangerous enough to have beaten Denis Kang and Jorge Santiago but erratic enough to have losses to Jason Day and Kendall Grove. Beating Belcher doesn't really get you anywhere and he's a very real threat to beat anyone by KO or submission. If Akiyama beats Belcher, particularly if its in convincing fashion, we'll know he's got real potential to make an impact in the UFC.
Style-wise, Akiyama is very different than Karo Parisyan, the judoka with whom UFC fans are most familiar. He's won plenty of fights by submission, but doesn't have much of a track record of using high-flying throws in the MMA ring. Instead he's often fought more like another judoka who's beginning to break out in the U.S.: Hector Lombard. Like the Cuban Olympian, Akiyama often uses his top-flight Judo skills to keep things standing or get top position where he can bring the power of his fists to bear.
If Akiyama is at 100% and not shot as Meltzer fears, we shouldn't be surprised to see him stay on his feet with Belcher and even get the KO.
If Akiyama can deliver the goods in the Octagon, American fans are still likely to miss why he's such a big deal in Japan. There are two reasons. First, he's of Korean descent but is a fourth generation Japanese. His Korean name is Choo Sung-Hoon. That might not sound like a big deal here in the U.S., but in Japan that means he's very much an ethnic underdog. More on this in the full entry. Secondly, he's been involved in two of the most controversial No Contests in Japanese MMA history.
Sergio Non talked to Akiyama about his perception in Japan:
That said, how much does it bother you to be viewed as a villain in Japan?
It's something that is created in Japan, and I accepts it as a fact. There's nothing I can do at this point.
More on these controversies in the full entry, plus enough fight videos to waste your whole evening.
Photo via www.sherdog.com
On the issue of his ethnicity, from Sherdog:
"I think a lot of people tend to focus too much on nationality, and when they try to assert or put me into either category [Korean or Japanese], I’m saddened by it," he says. "A lot of ‘Zainichi’ Koreans (ethnic Koreans living in Japan) feel the same way -- where they don’t know if they’re Korean or if they’re Japanese."
Like many ethnic Koreans born, raised and living in Japan, Akiyama has dealt with the difficulties of fitting into two cultures, under constant scrutiny and with little room for foreign inclusivity; the consequences can be seen in his struggles in judo and MMA over the past eight years. Nevertheless -- unlike his harshest critics and detractors -- he harbors no bitterness; that allows him to reconcile and appreciate both identities.
"I often get this question from fans asking, ‘Which do you like better: Japan or Korea?’ Or if it’s a Korea versus Japan game, ‘Which side do you support?’" Akiyama says. "And it’s an extremely difficult question because it’s like asking, ‘Which parent do you like better, your mother or your father?’
And on the controversies, first the "Greasegate" against Kazushi Sakuraba, the most legendary and beloved Japanese MMA fighter of all time. From Sherdog:
MMA welcomed the New Year with intense controversy, as Akiyama defeated the iconic Sakuraba in the main event of K-1's Premium 2006 Dynamite!! However, contention raged immediately after the bout, from every angle imaginable.
Sakuraba was seen to have repeatedly yelled to Yoshinori Umeki that Akiyama was excessively slippery, as Akiyama defended repeated takedown attempts from "The Gracie Hunter."...
In regards to whether Akiyama had used any lubricants or oils on his body before entering the ring, the inquiry revealed that while Akiyama had not intentionally applied any substances such as Vaseline or Thai oil, he had applied a skin moisturizer beforehand, for cosmetic purposes.
Stating simply that he had dry skin, a noticeably upset Akiyama told the media that while he understood substances such as petroleum jellies and Thai oils were prohibited, he thought that his use of a commercial skin cream was allowed. Akiyama said he accepts that he made a mistake, and offered a public apology to Sakuraba while also stating that he would like to face him again.
Then there's the fight that saw Akiyama take the damage that Meltzer believes may have destroyed his reflexes. Again from Sherdog:
Following a review of the Dec. 31 bout between Yoshihiro Akiyama (Pictures) and Kazuo Misaki (Pictures), the Yarennoka executive committee has ruled the fight a No Contest.
The match ended when Akiyama was knocked out with a vicious kick to the face as he attempted to scramble to his feet. Following the bout, there was much debate whether the decisive blow had been illegal.
Akiyama's camp launched a formal protest, and last week Yarennoka executive Keiichi Sasahara said his committee would formally review the bout.
This piece from Fight Opinion gets into more of the ugliness that went on after Misaki seemingly won the fight and took the microphone:
However, people think the aftermath was too excessive. It seems like ijime (a media lynching). Many people guess it is because he is Korean-Japanese. We easily see threads saying, "Fuck Akiyama, liar. Grease, grease, go to Korea" on Japanese web sites. Of course, good Japanese people don’t act like this and it may be excessive generalization.
Last night, Kazuo Misaki insulted Choo Sung-Hoon in front of a big crowd and on live television.
"Akiyama, you betrayed so many people and little kids in the ring. I cannot unforgive you. But, after tonight’s match with you, your heart reached me. After tonight, you should fight with a deep apology in mind for people." Motioning to the crowd, Misaki asked, "Would you support? Judo is the best! Everybody, Japanese is strong!"
Why does Misaki unforgive Choo? Why does Misaki dishonor Choo?
"Judo is the best!" is Choo’s famous catch-phrase. It seems Misaki jeered Choo by using it. He said, "Japanese is strong!" Some people here in South Korea feel that this is disgraceful to zainichi (Korean-Japanese) because Choo is already Japanese.

we'll find out
If Meltzer’s right, Akiyama is damaged goods. If he’s wrong, he should be able to steam roll Belcher.

Belcher is good enough to beat Akiyama regardless of “damaged goods”.

Agreed with Nate.
Belcher just doesn’t strike me as any type of threat, even if his record is pretty decent. So I say “Sexyama” wins by cool nickname.

Since you “never saw this dude before,” I’m curious how you formed this opinion.

Well, lets see..
I’ve never seen Akiyama before, but then I watched his highlight reel and compared it to the Alan Belcher fights I’ve seen (which i wasn’t too impressed) and came up with the conclusion that I dont see Belcher winning this match-up. And just a random thought, while Alan was submitting Kang in his last fight with one of the simplest choke in all of MMA, Akiyama was knocking him out cold. Not saying that means much, but it does weigh-in on my thoughts on who would win this fight. Good enough?

Great post
But losing to Alan Belcher isn’t really anything to be ashamed of. That dude is young and he can fight – and he’s going to give Akiyama problems.

Forget about the Kang fight and watch his fight versus current Sengoku MW champ Jorge Santiago.
Belcher is inconsistent as hell, but when he brings his ‘A’ game he is a handful for anybody.

I feel like this isn’t a real person and everyone is playing a trick on me. The biggest no-contest in the history of Japan is over Oil-of-olay?
If he is real I’m definitely on his side. Growing up in America we tend to take for granted that despite the racial issues that exist we are generally pretty tolerant of other nationalities and cultures especially when they were born and raised in our country. I really feel bad for the guy to have to constantly have to almost apologize for being of Korean heritage.

Fighting with dry skin is sooooo 2003.
Sexyama has had to overcome a lot. He couldn’t even find a place to train judo when he was younger in either Korea or Japan. Everyone shunned him. His story touched a lot of people, though. Especially in Korea where he could get away from the throngs of diehard Sakuraba and dirty grabaka criminal Misaki fans.

his lack of bowing, his shoving, his kick, his celebration, his comments—it goes way beyond something like varner doing the worm. in japanese society, its the equivalent of spitting in akiyama’s face.
GSP greased up, nobody really cares anymore (please dont get into it with me over that dead horse), pahlares claims hendo greased the legs. akiyama admitted he screwed up.
misaki did everything in his power to humiliate aki and his korean heritage.

I lost all respect for Misaki after that fight.

He humiliated him because he humiliated himself by cheating to beat a national hero. The people who hold that fight against Misaki don’t understand how awful Aki’s cheating was. Not only did he grease, it appeared the Org was in on it. The ref wouldn’t listen to Saku.
Had he done it against someone other than Sakuraba it wouldn’t have been such a dishonor. He cheated against a hero. A legend. He got what he had coming.
by VegasBatman on Jul 1, 2009 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ridiculous. Akiyama has been absolutely unrepentant regarding his “Oil of Olay”, to the point of featuring the product in many of his promotions as if it’s some kind of joke that he cheated against one of the most respected fighters in the history of the sport.
Nothing Misaki did was over the top by western standards, and I’m skeptical of any westerner making claims about what the Japanese and Korean audience thought.

I thought I had no idea about Japanese MMA; I can’t believe how many people don’t know of Akiyama. Fun fighter; I hope that the slow-down in his game is less due to damage and more due to stagnation. We’ve seen it before when a fighter just needs a change of scenery, and I think that’s the case here.

Can someone explain why that kick was illegal?
I know the rules are different overseas, but wouldn’t that kick be legal in the UFC? The guy was scrambling to his feet and got popped. I’m not 100% clear what the rule in the UFC is, but doesn’t it involve a fighter not being able to be struck with head kicks as long as his knees are in contact with the mat?
by The Pope of Chilitown on Jun 30, 2009 6:04 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
No it wouldn’t be legal anywhere. His hand was on the ground when he was kicked.

Yep. The knee is only a deciding factor if a hand is not also on the ground.

Akiyama has to be the most heavily sponsored fighter in UFC history, right?
Can’t think of anyone else backed by anything remotely close to a Nike-level sponsorship. I know GSP shot a Gadorade ad and Rashad did his Microsoft thing, but those seem like one-of type deals.

Nike will do what they did with the Jordan label. Sign someone with an established MMA fanbase and create a mini-brand within Nike with that fighter as the front man and then sign other fighters to fight under that label.

You know, I’m actually quite serious. I haven’t really been into Nike since like 1999, but for some reason they are a brand that I want to see get behind MMA. If they sold heavy blag gloves and cotton hand wraps, I would buy a pair.
Their logo looks quite good in the cage. I also think they could be the first major sports company to make MMA t-shirts that aren’t hideously designed.
Nike, in my MMA? It’s more likely than you think.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Nike get behind GSP. All its going to take for the cross-over to begin is for the right agent to have the right client. If they put the growth numbers for the sport and the demographic numbers (pretty much one of Nike’s main targets) in front of an exec with Nike for a cross-branding proposal I think something huge could be launched.

Misaki looks pretty tough despite being a bit of a ****
Sorry, not very knowledgable at all about the Japanese MMA scene other than some of the Pride stuff but what strikes me from the clips, in addition to how impressive Akiyama is (there’s a clip where he manhandles someone hoisting them off the ground and thowing them that is amazing), is that Kazuo Misaki looks like a real badass. I looked up his record and saw that he has a few tough losses to Filho, Santiago etc but he still looks pretty tough. Wikipedia says that he is also a former Judoka but the clips above seem to show he has very strong striking.

i'm very dubious of Misaki's judo credentials
He fights like a pure brawler with no grappling base.
He is a badass though. I’m looking forward to his fight with Nakamura here in a few.
And would love to see Misaki back in Strikeforce — he KTFO’d Joe Riggs, I’d like to see him against Cung Le, Jake Shields or Lawler.

You can see a little bit of his judo base when he is fighting off takedowns from the clinch. He is very good at positioning, keeps a strong base, and is very adept at breaking grips.
Just because he doesn’t fight like your typical judoka doesn’t mean the background isn’t there. Jorge Gurgel is a BJJ blackbelt and you would never know it from watching him fight. Ditto for BJ Penn in many of his fights. Dan Henderson has also been known to eschew his wrestling in favor of trying to decapitate his opponent with a right hand. And of course, there is also the ultimate example of the brawling grappler in Chuck Liddell.
Some guys just like to brawl, no matter how skilled they might be at other facets of the game.
