Will Gina Carano Get More Media Attention Than UFC 100?

Gfd_l5_mediumPromoted from the FanPosts by Kid Nate.

There has already been some hyping up of the Gina Carano vs. Cyborg Santos fight as possibly being the biggest MMA news event of 2009. Now, Lorreta Hunt guarantees that Gina Carano will have even more attention from the press than UFC 100:

Now, let’s talk about reality. Whether people like it or not, Gina Carano is going to have an influential role in not only the shaping of women’s MMA, but in the direction of the sport as a whole.

I guarantee you she will single-handedly garner more press and media attention than UFC 100. Just wait and see. The interest Gina generates will turn a whole new section of fans onto Strikeforce and MMA, and I wholeheartedly believe we will be watching Carano, Robbie Lawler, Jake Shields, and the rest of Strikeforce’s expanding stable on CBS by January 2010.

The "trickle-down effect" of this is obvious. Strikeforce will start to make more money and then fighters -- male and female -- will be able to ask Strikeforce for more money.

Gina Carano will be facing Cyborg Santos at the Strikeforce card on August 15. The lineup also includes two other title fights, and this fight being the headliner is a real testament of how popular of Gina is. The fight will be very beneficial to the sport and it will bring in the much deserved attention to women's MMA. Sure, I'll give you that, but I just find it hard to believe that it will gain more press than UFC 100. Scott Coker can continue to throw all the hyperboles he wants and say it's between the two best female fighters in the world, but i still don't see it happening.

Aside from UFC 100 being the biggest card in UFC history, let us not forget that the Strikeforce card will be in August, sandwiched between three Zuffa cards, WEC 42, UFC 101 & UFC 102. There's a reason why we don't have much MMA pay per views on July, and that is cause no one wanted to go head to head with UFC 100. Affliction backed off their plans of doing that, and hell, even Mayweather had to fake an injury move his fight.

Gina Carano vs. Cyborg Santos could somehow gain more attention than the cards featuring Torres vs. Bowles, Griffin vs. Silva, Florian vs. Penn, and Nogueira vs. Couture, but they would certainly take some wind off Strikeforce's sails. Gina Carano is surely one of the most popular fighters in all of MMA, but she can't single handedly garner more attention than the biggest card in UFC history.

I Agree With This...
The interest Gina generates will turn a whole new section of fans onto Strikeforce and MMA, and I wholeheartedly believe we will be watching Carano, Robbie Lawler, Jake Shields, and the rest of Strikeforce’s expanding stable on CBS by January 2010.

Whether Gina (on her own) gathers more attention is an irrelevant argument.
She WILL definitely gather a ton of attention, but we are missing the point here.

Strikeforce is using this long term growth and exposure strategy to recruit the likes of Gina, Roger Gracie, and they will do this with Shields to not go to the UFC (Pro Elite already did this once and succeeded). They are currently using it to get Gomi, a fighter that Gil Melendez has always dreamed of fighting. The CBS show will be a HUGE deal, and that may get more press than UFC 100.

No.

Jake Shields is coming to the UFC.

Isn’t that what everyone said last time and then he re-signed with EliteXC because they offered more money…LOL. Either way, I wouldn’t be surprised with either one, I just wont say 100% to UFC.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Jun 30, 2009 2:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Did you hear his last interview? He said it without saying it. Deep down he knows his career will be defined by what he does in the UFC.

I agree, that he should go to the UFC. But he challenged GSP last time, everyone said he was going, and then he resigned with EliteXC because they had a better offer…LOL.

I’m not going to write it on stone until it is a done deal this time.

i agree with gina being good for MMA and great for strikeforce.. BUT loretta is WRONG by saying gina will singlehandedly gain more attention from the media over the biggest card in UFC history.

When Strikeforce returns to CBS later this year, early next year, I believe she will get more press than UFC 100.

Wow.. next year in a speculated card..

no one is talking about speculative wet dreams yet.

Thats why I said Loretta’s argument was pointess. It’s a better argument for the first Strikeforce event on CBS.

The only reason people even slightly care about Women’s MMA is because Gina is hot and the second she loses virtually all interest in MMA will be gone. It’s a novelty act and nothing else.

Honestly I saw Cyborg in a YouTube vid maybe 2 years before she even fought in the US and the first thing I said was I wanted to see her fight Gina.

Sad but true

I’m rooting for women’s MMA, but once Cyborg kicks Gina’s ass, this particular bubble will burst.

by subo on Jun 30, 2009 2:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i think gina wins it though..

unless cyborg catches her, (which is a very real possibility) i think gina takes it cause she’s more technical..

Cyborg rushes in with looping haymakers, and i think a steady diet of good footwork, circling, and push kicks could keep her at a distance..

Methinks Gina is a lot tougher than you think she is……. = p

by evilstuntz on Jun 30, 2009 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

There might be something to what you say, however, I’d qualify it a bit.

If the Carano/Cyborg fight somehow ends up being an epic war like Griffin/Bonnar, then it doesn’t really matter who wins.

If Cyborg just strolls across the cage and drops the hammer on Gina, then I could see women’s MMA stumbling given how much hype Gina will have coming into that fight.

I voted yes but not because of Hunt. I don’t like her blatant anti Zuffa ass. If Strikeforce and Ginas manager are smart she will be all up on Conan, Letterman or Kimmel before the fight with a huge marketing push letting everyone know she will be fighting for the belt on Showtime.

Yeah, but add in American Gladiators, Maxim Magazine Top 100, and all the other press she’s done… she’ll garner more interest. And as Fenix said, if her managers work the phones correctly, she’ll be everywhere in the weeks heading into the fight.

Cause they don’t know much about her! They know about the UFC and they hardly know anything outside of it.

If you actually believe that majority of the casuals will care more about gina or any other single fighter over the biggest card in UFC history then you sir are crazy.

Seriously, I’ve mulled over this since the last time we had these round of articles, but there has been alot of interest from people I know don’t even watch MMA. My buddy is a casual fan and his buddy has NO interest in MMA, but he watched a card with us… and as soon as he saw her face… he wanted to see the damn event.

If Gina Carano can do that and get ONE person to just watch the event, I have to believe she can get more press and media coverage because those outlets want that interest from everyone.

Either way. UFC 100 will trump both attention and interest from both the media and the fans.

by Anton Tabuena on Jun 30, 2009 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, but she needs at least some interest from fans for media outlets and other sources to give Gina the attention, but she’ll get enough attention from that demographic and casual fans for media outlets and other sources to cover her.

I just can’t get off the notion that there are all sorts of outside alternative sources aiming at this event. I think that’s going to be the big difference.

That has no bearing...

That’s general fan interest on the Internet, not media coverage.

Nobody is saying that all the media coverage will garner some sort of huge amount of hype surrounding Carano after the event happens or before it… we’re saying she’ll attract MORE press and media coverage due to the circumstances of the fight being a main event, women’s groups, women’s aimed outlets, etc.

I get that she meant that vina will get more press

I just blatantly disagree.. Those 18-34 casual fans of MMA are bigger UFC fans than MMA fans, a lot of them don’t even know MMA.

Sure Gina will build attention, but not as much as UFC 100.

by Anton Tabuena on Jun 30, 2009 3:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t think you’re understanding the entire media/press aspect of this. UFC draws the same outlets over and over with some extra on bigger events. I think the media attention is not only going to come from those same outlets, but even women-specific outlets are probably going to go bananas for this event because it’s a main event on a MAJOR MMA promotion card, first of its kind.

Hell, it could also be labeled as a historical moment in MMA and women’s sports. A sport that features BOTH men and women fighters, but women are headlining the event. It truly depends on how her management works it. And historically, beautiful women in sports garner more interest. Look at tennis. I read an interview this morning about how Wimbeldon purposely puts the hotter chicks on the main court regardless of how good they are because they know it gets more ratings in the early matchups. It hits at the 18-34 demographic of men even if they aren’t fans of the damn sport.

Add in the fact that she’ll get increased interest from periodicals like Women’s Health, Shape, Fitness, all sorts of ridiculous attention for feature stories. She’ll get more interest from media outlets and press than UFC 100 IMO, but I could be wrong. I might be underestimating the media attention of Lesnar-Mir II, but Gina can grab more newer outlets that aren’t MMA friendly due to her casual appeal.

Yeah, I think weoweoweo is talking about the normal media outlets, plus an extensive coverage from ESPN, etc. On the other hand, Gina will gain attention from those same outlets, PLUS, some others due to her fame outside of MMA and fighting.

How much press she gets outside of the main outlets will really be telling on the amount of press the event will receive.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Jun 30, 2009 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, this is exactly what my thinking is on this whole concept. I think she has way more alternative sources versus the normal outlets the UFC is getting.

here's the thing.

they will get more alternative sources, sure.. Just like kyle maynard did. Gina will get some coverage from womens rights groups, she’ll probably get mentioned in a couple of other shows too..

but will that small mentions, bylines, apperances be enough coverage to beat the extensive coverages that all the “traditional sources” you guys are mentioning? even MMA blogs which will cover Gina by default, will pay more attention to the three zuffa cards sandwiching Strikeforce.. ESPN and other news sites will mention Gina, but they will cover the UFC thoroughly even way way after 100..

She will get mentioned more by those alternatives, but 100 will get more attention and coverage from the media, before, during and weeks after the event.

(and don’t forget about Brock Lesnar and the WWE..)

those different sources that mention her will not trump the coverage that all the other news and sports shows/sites will give… Gina will just win in bringing in new fans and new blood for the sport, but she won’t get more coverage overall.. more NEW mentions =/= more media attention.

…and you guys arguing that “hey sports sites and mmanews sites will cover gina too, but they have more alternatives therefore they will get more press coverage” is a flawed argument.. by that logic i can also argue, “This is the biggest UFC event so the mainstream media and other sources that dont cover the UFC often will do now, plus mma and sports sites will cover this more than Gina..” see what i mean?

I think you are missing the main point that Hunt is not comparing UFC 100 with the August 15 card, she is comparing Carano’s presence as a whole in MMA to UFC 100, and the impact each will have in the industry. She then alludes to Strikeforce, womens MMA, and MMA as whole growing and expanding to due Carano’s coverage and appeal. Her constant presence on Showtime and CBS will garner positive press and media coverage.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Jun 30, 2009 10:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

She is directly comparing the press Gina’s Showtime fight will get to the press UFC 100 will get. Hunt mentioned CBS once and that was in reference to her thinking this Showtime fight would get Strikeforce onto CBS, you are really stretching here.

She never mentioned August 15 or that her fight with Cyborg would garner more press than UFC 100.

If your trying to imply that she was claiming that Gina’s entire career would draw more attention that one single UFC event then this whole article by her was moronic on a level that is unfathomable. What kind of moron would write a serious article comparing the attention of an entire career to the media attention of a single event?????

by who me on Jul 1, 2009 10:03 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Yeah, Carrano’s next fight vs. UFC 100 isn’t a winner, but at least it’s not quite such a ridiculous comparison. Honestly, I thought she was vacillating between the two comparisons, which doesn’t really speak well for her either.

by An Old Friend on Jul 1, 2009 10:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Career exposure vs single event coverage doesn’t even make sense, of course she was comparing next fight vs UFC 100. She might get more media coverage than UFC 100 but then it’s not like UFC 100 is eating up the airwaves with mainstream media coverage to start with.

is your magic 8 ball telling you this?

weow (& subo)… you seem pretty adamant that gina carano simply cannot possibly do anything that would trump ufc 100. all of your responses to leland and supremacy’s remarks are simply that she just can’t and won’t do it and that ufc is just the ultimate best. i’ve read your guys comments before (on other posts as well) and they always seem to be very anti women’s mma or gina carano.

none of us know what will happen until the freakin events take place so why don’t we all just wait to see if any of this will actually ring true? and if it did, who cares? i’m a huge mma fan, i like the ufc but i also am openminded and like other promotions and fighters. what will it do if she did garner more media interest? unless you have some latent problem w/ women excelling over the perceived “male” ufc, then who really cares in the end. i don’t have a magic 8 ball so i don’t know what will happen but your constact replies that it’s blatantly impossible is just old already.

Don’t Associate me with being a Zuffa nut hugger cause that can’t be further away from the truth. I love all kinds of MMA and i don’t judge people because of what promotion they are on..

i am actually a big gina carano fan and i think this is the most intriguing women’s MMA fight ever..

If you would actually read what i am writing, i never EVER had any problem with women’s mma, non-UFC promotions or Gina Carano.. all i said is that Loretta Hunt is wrong..

I have nothing against women's MMA

This is not a fight between the two best women fighters on the planet, and if you think it is, then you don’t know what you’re talking about.

All Loretta was trying to do here was take away from the monumental card/achievement/milestone that is UFC 100.

either way, he’s an idiot for speaking before he thinks. the entire post was to refute loretta’s claims, yet he got, that i <3 the UFC, i hate non ufc orgs, i hate gina and i hate women’s mma.. goodjob flyingtsunami..

temper temper weow...

first of all, i am NOT judging you, i am commenting on your article and subsequent comments. and as you are entitled to your opinion re: loretta hunt’s article about gina, i am entitled to mine re: your opinions on that same issue. maybe you’re not a ufc nut hugger, but you certainly come off as such by your remarks.

maybe i shouldn’t lump u & subo together (i did so more for time and space) but both of your comments, especially here at least, come off like you’re trying to defend the ufc’s honor. aren’t you yourself judging by stating unequivocally that loretta hunt is wrong?? i am pretty much indifferent to her as a journalist, but she obviously rubs you guys and a lot of people the wrong way. what i have issue w/, w/ your post is that you continue to say that loretta is just plain wrong, that it’s an impossibility that gina could in fact garner more "mainstream" media coverage than ufc 100.

again, neither event has taken place so it’s really impossibl to say what will happen. to actually seem so adamant about it and take such offense at people who disagree w/ you is why i wrote what i wrote and why it seems you guys have some sort of bias. whether or not that is true, to just say someone you dislike (loretta) and now me, the "idiot" is just plain wrong is only more support for what i stated previously.

i don’t always agree w/ journalists or bloggers but i also don’t let my personal feelings of them get in the way of my opinion about what they wrote. ufc 100 is a week away and i haven’t seen any mainstream coverage essentially, the key being mainstream. randy v. brock was more hyped than ufc 100 imo. that aside, i could insult you as well and say you’re a 5’5" guy w/ a small pecker who can’t stand loretta hunt so therefore she must be wrong; and how could a woman’s fight outshine an entire historical event as ufc 100, but i won’t do that.

i will let time pass and see what actually comes to fruition to see if the media attn is true or not. and i also will not make blanket statements that something is or is not true simply b/c i have disdain for the person who said it or b/c it goes against my endearing feelings for the event in question that is challenged. to do anything differently would be… judgmental.

by theflyingtsunami on Jul 3, 2009 4:08 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

you can disagree with my opinion

but calling me a UFC nut hugger is just plain wrong..

I merely disagreed with loretta and gave my arguments on why i think she’s wrong.. dont confuse that with being a nuthugger. That is not me being biased or me having a disdain for loretta.. I am not out to get loretta or anything, i was merely disagreeing with her sentiments…

My feelings didn’t play a single role in this and it doesnt have any connection in why i made this fanpost.. that is just me calling what i see, and giving my opinion on it..

i may be wrong about gina, but im definitely not a UFC nut hugger nor am i a loretta hunt hater… Try to find comments of me nut hugging or hating on her.. I’ll stop writing here if you can prove that i am a nut hugger or a hater cause that was just me giving my honest (non biased) opinion and analysis on the situation..

it's really funny how when i wrote about tom atencio and affliction before,

people called me a huge affliction fan, now that i write about the UFC, you call me a nuthugger..

you have got to learn which are analysis and opinions and which comments are blatant nut hugging.. some people commenting in this site are like that, but i’m sorry cause i’m not one of them..

and if you would actually pay attention to everything i post, you’d understand.. just cause i felt strongly about an opinion of mine, doesn’t mean i love or hate one thing or another. i just had an opinion about lorettas statements. not to be mistaken for an attack on her..

even those who i am debating with (like leland and supremacy) probably know that i don’t nut hug, i don’t know why you’re like that.. unless youve mistaken me for subo.. (he’s not the MOST nut hugging person around coughsupremacycough, but he can easily be mistaken for one)

Yeah, but it will be hyped as a fight against the two best women in the world unfortunately for the women who are the best. And people want to throw Megumi Fuji and all those women in the mix, but the problem is that they aren’t in the prime weight class. Women’s MMA tends to have a much more bigger presence in one specific weight class. All the rest of those classes seem to go unnoticed unless you are a hardcore fan.

Lets Read More Of The Post

Strikeforce will start to make more money and then fighters — male and female — will be able to ask Strikeforce for more money.

Other promotions will prosper. The UFC will prosper. More women will get an opportunity to fight, which is why I think Carano should be embraced by the MMA community, not glowered at by it from the sidelines.

Oh and Chad, Coker knows full well what he got his hands on in Carano. He wouldn’t have put her in a headlining role if he didn’t have full faith she could carry a show. He will spend whatever money necessary to advertise her to the world because that’s a sound business decision. Coker has big plans, not just for Carano, but for an army of female fighters. Gina will be his key to achieving it.

Why are people getting really upset again?

Hunt said that “Carano will garner more press and media attention than UFC 100.

She didn’t say Carano will get more press for the August show than UFC 100 (down with the UFC, blah, blah, blah). She said Carano (overall) will get more press and media attention for the sport of MMA than one event (UFC 100). When Strikeforce has their first show on CBS, we will see the star power that Gina has and her ability to draw viewers and different media outlets, which we saw for EliteXC on CBS. Like Leland and I have mentioned above, Gina will in fact garner more media attention than the usuals that cover sports and MMA, due to her fame outside of the sport and being one of the most noticeable women figures in current society. Nothing is earth shattering here, and theres really not much to be worked up about.

The point of this article was not to bash the UFC, but to point out how important she is, not just for Womens MMA, but for MMA in general, which will cause all promotions to prosper in the end.

Garner more mainstream media attention, perhaps, maybe Glen Beck will do a whiny rant and perhaps ESPN will mention that it’s happening but to be honest the mainstream media almost entirely ignores the sport now anyway so if she could get a blurb on Entertainment tonight then she could beat out what the entire sport has got for the last 6 months. Hunt is going overboard thinking this will change things or bring a bunch of new fans in, it will get a minor press boost and the show should do good numbers in terms of what Showtime is used to getting. Gina was on American Gladiator when the EliteXC shows happened (back when AG was still on) and she didn’t get a media firestorm, why would she now?

by who me on Jun 30, 2009 6:49 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

by MMASuPreMaCy on Jun 30, 2009 7:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No I’m not missing the point at all, heck my point directly comes from stuff in the Hunt article.

Now, let’s talk about reality. Whether people like it or not, Gina Carano is going to have an influential role in not only the shaping of women’s MMA, but in the direction of the sport as a whole.

Yes lets talk reality, Gina Carano is going to shape the direction of the sport as a whole? Seriously Gina Carano is so popular that she is going to literally change the direction of the sport as a whole? She’s going to get so much media attention that is going to change everything? After her fight MMA will be different? Please that’s not reality that’s Hunt being silly.

The interest Gina generates will turn a whole new section of fans onto Strikeforce and MMA

Does anyone honestly believe this?? Gina will get nice little media boost and may garner a handful of more viewers for her but what evidence at all have we ever seen that leads us to believe she will garner so much media attention that she will change the direction of the sport? Does anyone actually believe That was the point Hunt was trying to push off on people here, perhaps your the one who missed it (which would be sort of odd because you even quoted that part of the article).

by who me on Jun 30, 2009 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, those arguments are fine. Most people are comparing the August 15 card to UFC 100, and I was alluding to that as missing the point. Where I disagreed with you is that you mentioned Showtime, but you have to consider Gina on CBS, and the potential to be the first female MMA champion on CBS. That could indeed be huge.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Jun 30, 2009 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I was responding to the actual point that this article is written about not some mystery CBS show with Carano that so far is still wishful thinking. Her show American Gladiator was actually on back when the EliteXC events happened and she didn’t change the direction of the entire sport, why would we assume that would happen now (particularly without the big goofy ass that drew those CBS ratings on the card)?

She will do ok on Showtime but I’m not even going to worry about CBS until someone actually presents real evidence that CBS is going to show another MMA event. When that show is booked then we can talk about that but right now I am discussing an article in the real world about Gina Carano and her upcoming Showtime fight.

by who me on Jun 30, 2009 11:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Loretta’s comparison is flawed, and either she knows people will make that assumption that she is talking about Gina’s fight and not her overall career and later go “no no no, I am not wrong and you missed the point so neener neener” or she actually meant the comparison to be between Gina’s next fight and UFC 100.

A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.

If Loretta wants to compare dick sizes:

Lets see how much press Kimbo gets before his tuf premiere versus Ginas coverage.

Zuffa will make more money from UFC 100 (1 ppv) than strikeforce will make in the next 3 years.

The article has nothing to do with profit comparison between the two promotions. Everyone knows that, Captain Obvious.

you’re right… I’m merely pointing out the “impact” she was talking about Gina would have on the “sport”.

People have short memories. Gina was on CBS already and showtime during the height of American Gladiators. http://www.google.com/trends?q=gina+carano look at her popularity and when it was at its peak!

So far how has she changed or impacted the sport that loretta “the moron” hunt thinks she will do now?

by mmalogic on Jul 1, 2009 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

To his defense, comparing dick sizes is mmalogic’s expertise, so he brings it up a lot.

How has she impacted the sport, hmmm, let me see:

I think the result of the Lesanr/Mir fight will get the most coverage no matter the result. The ESPN darling (Lesnar) will get plenty of airtime no matter what. And if we see some incredible upset in the other fights it will get mentioned too.

While female MMA has grown, it won’t receive the same coverage. Maybe if you are using Sherdogs forums as a measuring stick it might. A smaller show with Gina on Showtime has no chance against the media machine and Zuffa. I understand about Gina and her appeal but here in redneck USA everyone is talking about Mir/Lesnar and the hardcore knows about the Gina fight but in no way is it considered anything more than a sideshow.

Who would Strikeforce rather have: Brock Lesnar, Kimbo Slice or Gina Carano?

Carano is a distant third.

by subo on Jun 30, 2009 7:34 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

LOL at Kimbo.
EliteXC had him, and he generates a lot of press, too bad it was mostly negative.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Jun 30, 2009 7:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Kimbo didn’t generate bad press – the assholes and crooks that tried to paid his opponent to stand did.

Twenty bucks says more people watch episode one of TUF than any Strikeforce event ever.

Spike is a very close second with Henderson/Rampage.

by subo on Jun 30, 2009 9:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Lets come back to reality a bit too, the most watched MMA fight in North America was great ratings in terms of MMA but in terms of network tv it still wasn’t overly impressive. CBS was interested in MMA programming because they were able to get it dirt cheap and could fit onto a tv dead night not because it was a ratings standout(not to mention the show without Kimbo rating’s were a utter disaster). CBS and SpikeTV are in completly different programming models, what is spectacular ratings on Spike isn’t all that on CBS, if they can just barely beat Spike’s numbers then why would they waste their time and money on MMA?

Here lets put it in real perspective, EliteXC, Primetime averaged 4.85 million viewers for the whole CBS broadcast. SpongeBob Atlantis SquarePantis drew 8.8 million on freaking Nickelodeon. Perhaps CBS should try signing the cartoon sponge?

LOL…

Gina > Kimbo. We’re talking about a beautiful woman that can not only draw women to watch, but can also draw men. Give me a break. The key here is hyping Cyborg up to be a badass.

How sure are you that CBS will even do MMA again… They have yet to make any type of statement that they would even consider it.

I give it a less than 50-50 chance that MMA is aired on CBS again. If Strikeforce didnt get Gina it would have been a zero percent chance. The august 15th show will be the biggest indicator if it will happen. Right now the strikeforce shows average around 275k viewers. If the August 15th show produces 500k viewers then Ill give it a 90% plus chance that STrikeforce will be on CBS. If the aug 15th show does less than 375k viewers Ill give it a less than 10% chance.

The second CBS mma show ratings were abysmal (a UFC replay on spike beat the live CBS show) – and that second show is more indicative of how MMA would do on network TV in general. “MMA” didnt get the ratings – Kimbo did.

Kimbo got around 500k viewers on showtime. If the Aug 15th card can do the same then CBS will be 90% plus a lock… so get the steppin on the fanposts – you’ve got work to do!

by mmalogic on Jun 30, 2009 8:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

50-50? There is a reason Strikeforce is stacking up that August 15 card and Gina vs Cyborg is on that card. It will get good ratings, and MMA will be on CBS by the end of the year, early next year.

They wanted to put the August card on CBS, but the timing wasn’t right. They weren’t prepared to put MMA back on network TV. I predict the August show on Showtime will do at least 400-500k viewers, and MMA will be back on network TV. People have to remember, Strikeforce and CBS stated that the earliest they were targeting another prime time event was in the Fall this year.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Jun 30, 2009 8:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

where did CBS say that? Strikeforce said the fall. CBS has yet to make any commitment.

The August card was never meant to be on CBS… the reason its being stacked is because like I said – It will be THE indicator whether they even have a chance to get on CBS.

500k viewers and it should be a lock – less than 375k you’ll need to make up for it with fanposts.

temper temper weow...

first of all, i am NOT judging you, i am commenting on your article and subsequent comments. and as you are entitled to your opinion re: loretta hunt’s article about gina, i am entitled to mine re: your opinions on that same issue. maybe you’re not a ufc nut hugger, but you certainly come off as such by your remarks.

maybe i shouldn’t lump u & subo together (i did so more for time and space) but both of your comments, especially here at least, come off like you’re trying to defend the ufc’s honor. aren’t you yourself judging by stating unequivocally that loretta hunt is wrong?? i am pretty much indifferent to her as a journalist, but she obviously rubs you guys and a lot of people the wrong way. what i have issue w/, w/ your post is that you continue to say that loretta is just plain wrong, that it’s an impossibility that gina could in fact garner more “mainstream” media coverage than ufc 100.

again, neither event has taken place so it’s really impossibly to say what will happen. to actually seem so adamant about it and take such offense at people who disagree w/ you is why i wrote what i wrote and why it seems you guys have some sort of bias. whether or not that is true, to just say someone you dislike (loretta) and now me, the “idiot” is only more support for what i stated previously.

i don’t always agree w/ journalists or bloggers but i also don’t let my personal feelings of them get in the way of my opinion about what they wrote. ufc 100 is a week away and i haven’t seen any mainstream coverage essentially, the key being mainstream. randy v. brock was more hyped than ufc 100 imo. that aside, i could insult you as well and say you’re a 5’5" guy w/ a small pecker who can’t stand loretta hunt so therefore she must be wrong; and how could a woman’s fight outshine an entire historical event as ufc 100, but i won’t do that.

i will let time pass and see what actually comes to fruition to see if the media attn is true or not. and i also will not make blanket statements that something is or is not true simply b/c i have disdain for the person who said it or b/c it goes against my endearing feelings for the event in question that is challenged. to do anything differently would be… judgmental.
