UFC Undisputed "at the high end of our estimate range"
THQ: UFC Undisputed Ships 2 Million Copies
http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=23902
The major THQ release UFC 2009: Undisputed is off to a strong start -- great news for the publisher, which just recently had to lay off 600 workers.
The licensed mixed martial arts fighting game has shipped approximately 2 million units since its launch on May 19, THQ told investors and analysts this week. Analyst Colin Sebastian with Lazard Capital Markets said the game's performance at retail is an important victory for the publisher.
"[Sales of Undisputed are] at the high end of our estimate range and suggest upside potential to our recently raised revenue estimate of $180 million," he wrote in a research note.

That sounds like great news.
The only problem I see is that the game has such a strong niche, that most MMA fans probably bought their games in the first week or so, so sales will most likely slow down now.

It is great news, I talked to people who didn’t even think the game would break 2 mil sales in two months…it hasn’t even been a month and they’ve hit 2 mil…so even if it slows down, the game is a great success.

2 million shipped to retail isn't 2 million in sales, yet

How does the gaming market work?
Does THQ pocket the money from the retailers upon shipping, or do they ‘front’ the product to the retailers and take back any excess inventory that does not sell after a certain period?
Have they been paid for 2MM copies and the retailers are now on the hook to sell those copies, or does THQ have to wait until the game is sold to the end-user?

This is common for almost every game, most games this generation are VERY frontloaded, most of the sales will be within the first 2 months.
2 million in the first month is great news, anything over a million is generally considered a big success.

You forget about gamers who like fighting games, but aren’t necessarily MMA fans. I have 5 friends who aren’t mma fans but are buying Undisputed.

Most of those fighting game fans will be shifting gears for Fight Night 4 though, very soon.
It will be interesting to see how that game goes, because tons of people have been waiting for that game for a WHILE!
Good year for fighting games, and next year looks just as promising.

Here is What I Found
Sales for the games first week were 241,328 units for Xbox 360 Version 6 and 216,425 copies for the PS3 version 7, eclipsing games like Fight Night Round 3 for 1 week sales figures.
by MMASuPreMaCy on Jun 3, 2009 3:19 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
yes, it is worth to note that THQ does state shipped numbers (2 million shipped), either way it bodes well for sequels, especially if they can make some serious improvements to them (as opposed to only being roster updates)
by pr0cs on Jun 3, 2009 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
In that tight of a schedule, you would assume that roster updates will be the bulk for 2010.
Maybe southpaw, and Clay Guida maybe by 2011? Hahaha… Kimbo in 2010 UFC game will be hilarious. Kimbo beard clipping problems left and right. =)
by MMASuPreMaCy on Jun 3, 2009 4:49 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not that tight of a schedule. The sequel has likely been in development for several months, which is common before the game hits store shelves. They probably know of key areas that need improvement and hopefully those will be addressed in 2010 along with some of the biggest community complaints.
I’m not expecting a totally new game with 2010, nor do I want one, but I do hope they’ve addressed stuff around the goofy UI, some of the career mode stuff and multiplayer tweaking.
by pr0cs on Jun 4, 2009 11:26 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t know why you seem to think that roster updates take so much time when making these games. this is how video game series work, you make a game engine, make the first game, and then you spend the next few years tweaking it.
The hard part of making Undisputed 2009 was making the game, now that the game is made, they have a whole year to work on just clipping issues, and southpaws. Putting new people into the game is not hard.

I believe I was one of those who made fun of you…
Before the release the highest conservative estimate was 2m and change. Over 700k copies were sold first week. The estimate is now changed to what you said – so apologies and much props.
This game will impact Zuffa and the industry almost as much as TUF and in some cases more so

I’ve been saying this since for a long while now.

This wouldn’t be the first time we’ve agreed and it probably won’t be the last.

Yeah, the thought was the impact would be huge at 1.5m units… but the new estimate being around 3m is going to be insane.
Right now everyone looks back and says TUF was THE major catalyst for where Zuffa is today… pretty soon they will look back and say this Game was THE major catalyst for where Zuffa will be tomorrow.

I’m really beginning to think that this year is the beginning of the 3rd phase of the Zuffa UFC.
1st: Post-Purchase
2nd: Post-TUF
3rd: Post-Game/Big Deal Dana was talking about.
We’ll see.

My only question is, if you can get 2 million people to buy a $60 video game, why can’t you get all of them to buy the same damn PPV?
by subo on Jun 3, 2009 11:35 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Because you can only watch that once and there’s a new one every month.

Give these people a chance to order the PPV.
The first WCW games by THQ did wonders for WCW and WWF. There would be more of an impact if UFC/anyone had a bigger imprint on TV (like the Monday Night Wars) it would have more of an impact, but I bet lots of these people will buy some PPVs.
by Phildo on Jun 4, 2009 1:37 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Because a lot of those people are watching the PPV in groups.

Btw -what’s to stop him just creating a new name and posting stuff? Just out of interest.
I’m quite disappointed that he was banned actually.

Because he is wearing the fact he got banned as a badge of pride in other forums he posts on. Honestly it seemed as though he was pushing to see just how far he could poke the staff before getting banned. He found out.

Meh.
While I wholeheartedly agree that Supremacy is a loon, and that his titles are misleading as hell, he does manage to ferret out good articles/content regarding non-Zuffa MMA events. I just read the original article and skip over his spin, but I never would have seen the original without him posting the link in the first place.

ufc reaching inot the gaming market and selling will be huge just as you guys have said
gaming just adds one more level of credibility and accessibilty to mma, especially if the game was good and pulls in fighting fans who never even thought of the ufc or gaming fans who usually make up that large teen demographic and male 18-39 demo
if this does better than fight night 4 that would be huge, even frthering the idea that mma is replacing boxing
as peter moore of ea sports said that they will be only making fight night on a 3 yr basis(giving fans enuff time 2 forget and convert if the last iteration wasnt good)
and also ea sports mma,b/c for some reason ea is synonymous for sport

This game is awesome
but I hope they fix the small problems in the next one. You need to be able to check leg kicks, and when people quit on xboxlive the game still needs to count. Almost half of my subs didn’t get counted because people turned off their boxes right after they tapped
