Report: Mike Swick vs. Martin Kampmann Possible at UFC 103

According to MMAWeekly, UFC welterweights Mike "Quick" Swick and Martin Kampmann are currently in talks to battle it out in the Octagon at UFC 103:

A welterweight contest between Mike Swick and Martin Kampmann is likely for UFC 103, MMAWeekly.com has learned from sources close to the fight.

While bout agreements have not been signed, both parties have agreed to the match-up.

UFC 103 is expected to take place on Sept. 19 at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, the promotion’s second trip to the Lone Star State. The event has yet to be announced by the UFC.

This is some great news for fans who have been clamoring for some better competition for Swick, and this will most assuredly lead to some sort of spot in the contention race at the top of the division for the winner. Stylistically, it's a solid matchup between two guys who know how to bang the leather. I'm wondering if Kampmann's jiu-jitsu can be molded to be a formidable danger to Swick on the floor for this matchup, or will Kampmann rely on his standup skills to blast Swick? It should be a great fight.

I love me some Kampmann. Swick has his work cut out for him. If Kampmann is +200 or better I’m firing away.

In the Undisputed game, Kampmann uber alles.

i like kampann alot too, he was too small for mw, but swick is tough. the winner could possibly make a case for a title shot. gsp has to fight somebody.

Is this a #1 contender match?

I dislike Matt Hughes and Twidder.

if it’s not, it should be. unless fitch/alves 2 plays itself out.

This fight makes a hell of a lot of sense. They should also have Hardy fight Condit I think, at least set up some form of pecking order in the WW ranks

by StevenGiles on Jun 29, 2009 6:04 PM EDT reply actions

So what happens to Hughes? Hardy?

by Sokonojudo on Jun 29, 2009 6:05 PM EDT reply actions

Hughes vs. Kos/Trigg winner? Condit vs. Hardy?

by Nick Thomas on Jun 29, 2009 6:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Rofl @ Hughes/Trigg III if Trigg wins.
UFC 103 is 9/19/09. Hughes last fought 5/23. Depends how long he wants to wait.

by Sokonojudo on Jun 29, 2009 6:13 PM EDT up reply actions

like i said in another swick discussion… i think hardy should be in with a guy like brock larson next (someone who also has some momentum going), rather than condit (who’s coming off a loss). certainly wouldn’t complain if they did condit/hardy though. the natural born killer should be due for a fight soon anyway.

by woooburn on Jun 29, 2009 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions

agree on Hardy vs Larson

and letting Condit have a rebuilding fight against someone who’s also coming off a loss. Maybe Mike Pyle.

Marquardt lit up Kampmann, he was bigger, stronger, faster and just ran threw him. I expect Mike Swick to put pressure on Kampmann and make him out of his element. But man, Martin Kampmann is EXTREMELY underrated. Will be a great fight similiar to Condit/Kampmann

If the winner gets a title shot

they’ll have completely by-passed the murderer’s row of wrestlers in the division.
I really think Swick should have to beat Brock Larson, Frank Trigg or Matt Hughes before he gets a title shot.
Kampmann should have to beat Fitch or Koscheck.

but what happens if they lose to them. GSP-Trigg 2, GSP-Kos 2, GSP-Hughes 4, No ty.

by Sokonojudo on Jun 29, 2009 6:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Thats why i think this could be a #1 contender match.

I dislike Matt Hughes and Twidder.

I sort of see what you mean, the division has been dominated by strong wrestlers for a long time. But you can’t have someone getting a title shot off beating Larson or Trigg can you? So if Swick beats either of those guys he has to fight again before a shot, and who? There is a bit of a vacuum behind Alves and GSP, they need a contender now with a bit of momentum and Swick-Kampmann gives exactly that

by StevenGiles on Jun 29, 2009 6:34 PM EDT up reply actions

this is all true

its just lame that Swick or Kampmann gets a very easy road to the top of the division while everyone else swims in the shark tank.

It would probably depend on the GSP/Alves outcome

If GSP wins then winner of Swick/Kampmann would get the title shot more than likely. There is no demand for GSP to rematch Koscheck, Hughes, Fitch or Trigg. If Alves wins however there could be a high demand for a rematch with Fitch and still possible matches with Swick/Kampmann

Having to beat Condit and Swick is the easy road?

Love this fight!

I’m gonna have to go with Kampmann but i agree with the previous comments that this could end up being as close as the fight he had with Condit.

If it does turn out anything like that fight, i will be a happy man.

I'm thinking Kampmann by decision.

Xtreme Couture bias aside, I think Kampmann does fine in the standup, takes Swick down repeatedly, and controls Swick on the ground (not unlike the Condit fight).

Yeah I see Swick taking this fight. His reach alone is what does it.

by goodbones on Jun 29, 2009 10:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Wait, what? Did I really say that? Kampmann by TKO in the 1st.

by goodbones on Jun 29, 2009 10:22 PM EDT up reply actions

It is ironic

that a place called ‘The American Kickboxing Academy’ is home to so many high caliber wrestlers.

That said, Kampmann’s takedowns are phenomenal (especially his clinch takedowns), and I just see him taking the fight to Swick, and controlling him in the clinch or on the ground.

Hmm...

Well, I just went to Xtreme Couture today and saw him, and when I asked him, he said that it’s just a rumor. However, he then added “Sometimes those rumors come true.”

As MMAussie said, Love this fight

And I have Kampmann by decision. Swick has the wrestling, but Kampmann has the striking and is probably too dynamic off his back. That said, it’s a good, competitive fight.
