Quote of the Day: Jon Jones
Talks to MMAWeekly.com : "There’s just so much more that I need to know. Martial arts is endless, there’s no one who knows it all. Bruce Lee was great, but did he have takedown abilities, did he have great jiu-jitsu? No. Right now, I’m trying to be a true champion, and I want to do the things that Bruce Lee wasn’t figuring out. I want to be like a Muhammed Ali that can actually wrestle and do jiu-jitsu. I’m hungry to be the best. I know there’s a lot of guys out there saying that, but I truly mean it."And UFC.com:
"Jake O’Brien has been shooting that same double leg takedown for the three or four years he’s been in the UFC, and I’ve prepared myself to stop his takedowns." "I’ve been working submissions from the front headlock position, and I’m prepared to be there a lot."
"With the Stephan Bonnar fight I felt like I was Jonny Jones at 15 percent, and right now [heading into the O’Brien fight] I feel like I’ve kicked it up to maybe 17 percent."-- Jon Jones (8-0), confident about his upcoming fight against Jake O’Brien (11-2) at UFC 100.

Jones might be giving more of his gameplan away than I would advise.

But what is O’Brien going to do with the information? Stop shooting double leg takedowns? I suppose he’ll focus on defending submissions from front headlock position, but he still has to look out for knees and Jones’ striking. And what if Jones is purposely misleading O’Brien by focusing on submissions in the interview. Maybe he’s really drilling knees hardcore as a defense to the shot and only focusing on submissions as a secondary tool.

No, because he’s admitting he’s not anywhere near that level. He’s aspiring for greatness. Human beings rarely accomplish great things when they shoot for mediocrity. Not that shooting for greatness is a guarantee or anything.

Why?
He is complimenting them as the best in their friend, and saying he hopes to one day be the best in his own field. I can’t imagine a serious person who does NOT want to be the best in their chosen field.

Sorry man
You aren’t going to get much support ’round these parts saying anything that could even remotely be construed as criticism towards Jon Jones.
Due to Cheick Kongo's atrocious takedown defense....

Well Bruce Lee and Gene Lebell did train together
So Bruce knew some grappling.
Plus he has a sick armbar escape here ;)

Yep
I’ve got an old JKD book somewhere that covers the 3 ranges used in JunFan which were striking, trapping/clinching and grappling. Budo/Aikido/Judo-style armbar takedowns and such.
by asa on Jun 29, 2009 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I read a JKD books once and it also had a whole section dedicated to groin striking.

ridiculous banter in here. We all know what Jake O’Brien’s gameplan is. Jon is just saying what all of us are saying. The comparisons to Bruce Lee and Ali are whatever in my book. We always look to connect Lee with today’s martial artists anyway.

Im betting big on O’Brien and Mir for 100. Not that I necessarily think they will win, but I certainly dont think they are underdogs to the extent the bookies are making them.

Every time Bones opens his mouth....
I like him even more. He’s outspoken but not arrogant. Unlike a lot of fighters, he has personality. But he’s still being sincere w/what he says. Plus, he’s a tremendous athlete. If he wins a couple more, I expect him to get a big marketing push by early 2010.

I love this guy’s attitude. I honestly think he’s the next big thing in martial arts and possibly the guy to eventually figure out Machida. I think his potential is limitless. Does anyone else agree?

huge potential
lots of chances to not live up to it.

Sums it up perfectly
However, all he needs to add for some real devastation is strikes from the clinch and submissions from the top. Those two aspects would fit extremely well with his takedown style.

15 to 17 pretty precise. Reminds me of the ufc game with custom character lol. Anyway, Jon Jones, big big prospect, I would be extremely disappointed to see him lose (no disrespect to O’Brien). His greco roman wrestling is so crisp it kinda reminds me of how I was looking forward to karo’s fights, just to see some cool judo throws.
by spectaa on Jun 29, 2009 1:32 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
and I was just about to bring up Karo
as an example of someone with absolutely huge potential who never lived up to it.
Jones does seem to train for his fights so that’s one big step up over Karo.

I am still wondering if training over at Bomb Squad is going to is going to help or hinder his career. It may help, but I have no info on that camp what so ever.
by The Bronzeville Bully on Jun 29, 2009 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I still remember when people said the same thing about Diego Sanchez training with some nobody in New Mexico. I heard similar rumblings about the guys at Arizona Combat Sports just a couple of years ago.
Sometimes those guys who you have no info on today become the MMA gurus of tomorrow.

Plus Greco Roman throws are more applicable to MMA. Most of the Judo guys that I know have a lot of trouble adjusting to holding an underhook/overhook.

is jake o’brien cuttin 40 pounds for this fight, or is this gonne be at a catch weight? jon jones is 205 and jake o’brien is 240
by killaskinz on Jun 29, 2009 1:43 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Jake is moving to 205. He has talked about the move for a while now.

He’s already fought at 205 once against Christian Wellisch at UFC 94.

Thats right, they both moved down for that one, correct? I remember hearing it a long time ago and looked at his record and didn’t recall the feb fight was at LHW. Thanks for the correction.

Yep, that was the first time at 205 for both of them. And no worries, obscure/worthless info is my specialty. ;-)

Bruce Lee
Didn’t need a takedown defense… I highly doubt you’d get to the point where you’d try shooting in on him. Most likely you’d be flat on your ass from one of his fast hard punches or kicks.
