Is that remarkably small for Bob Sapp, or have I artificially inflated his weight in my head?

Someone needs to talk me down, because I’m about to bet money on Bob Sapp.

by Derek Suboticki on Jun 26, 2009 10:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Bob Sapp doesn't know what grappling is.

Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.

Don't do it Subo!

Remember Jan Nortje!

At least Nortje has hands – Lashley doesn’t.

Before you put money on Sapp watch this video:

Ok now put your money back in your pocket.

I say do it, but that’s mostly because I want to see the fanpost afterwards. Especially is Sapp wins.

Even still, that's like a 25-pound difference.

Is the athletic commission going to let that fight go forward? Do they even have an athletic commission in Missippi?

I don’t think MMA is sanctioned by a athletic commission there so no the weight difference isn’t a problem.

by who me on Jun 26, 2009 11:34 PM EDT up reply actions

So that brings us back to “how the heck did this get sanctioned then?”

by who me on Jun 27, 2009 4:43 AM EDT up reply actions

First of all its more like 70 pounds.
Also its a super heavyweight bout. The larger competitors get the less a weight difference matters.

I dislike Matt Hughes and Twidder.

by MonkeyCHops on Jun 27, 2009 4:49 AM EDT up reply actions

But Lashley isn’t even close to superheavyweight.

by who me on Jun 27, 2009 4:55 AM EDT up reply actions

He would be a very large HW but really at super HW the huge weight limits matter a lot less.
Realistically I don’t think you could argue that there is a dangerous weight or strength difference here.

I dislike Matt Hughes and Twidder.

by MonkeyCHops on Jun 27, 2009 5:00 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m not argueing that the weight difference matters(heck the smaller guy is the favorite to win) I am pointing out that the superheavyweight division is over 265lbs and Lashley weighed in at 255.4 lbs thus he didn’t make weight as a superheavyweight. How can you have a superheavyweight bout when one guy isn’t at the weight to be in that division? That’s the whole point of setting up the weight classes to start with, to insure that both fighters fall within the same specific weight limits.

If this is sanctioned then how did they get around the fact that these two guys are in different weight classes?

by who me on Jun 27, 2009 5:15 AM EDT up reply actions

They probably aren’t following the Nevada State rules precisely. Each commission determines it’s own rules.

by thekiltedwonder on Jun 27, 2009 9:57 AM EDT up reply actions

That’s not the Nevada rules it’s the “Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts”. Has Mississippi not adopted the “Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts”?

by who me on Jun 27, 2009 2:00 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s why this fight is in Louisiana.

by Lewish on Jun 27, 2009 11:03 AM EDT up reply actions

Really?

If 75 doesn’t qualify, what the hell does?

Typo!

Apologies. Meant to write 75.

Normally he is weighed in Japanese pounds.

I dislike Matt Hughes.

by MonkeyCHops on Jun 27, 2009 4:02 AM EDT up reply actions

I put $10 on Sapp

There’s no way he could win a decision and Lashley can probably take him down at will and grind him out. That said he’s got a lot of power and could potentially finish this in the opening minutes. Will he? Probably not, but at +425 its worth a small bet. Hopefully Lashley will stand with him and if he does Sapp has a decent chance.

by bla10cow on Jun 26, 2009 10:40 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, except he’s got a lot of power that moves in slo-motion.

Lashley is actually explosive. I’m predicting some more crying.

Lashley looks pretty darn good at 255lbs, not to mention his body is back in proper proportion to his head size. That’s the difference between fighting shape and pro wrestling shape.

Video

does anyone have a link to the weighin video?

I’m confused: Tom has a native tattoo, but its not a skull.

You would think a guy who runs a tattoo based t shirt design company would have better ink, or at least Ozzy and a skeleton in a top hat riding a dragon on his shoulder. :D

by who me on Jun 27, 2009 1:17 AM EDT up reply actions

I couldn’t take him seriously…mostly because when I picture myself staring him down, I think “T-Shirt Guy” and chuckle.

I hope

Tom gets spanked ala Tito.

by Riney on Jun 27, 2009 12:36 AM EDT reply actions

Lashley

has gone back to using his old WWE gimmicks. My theory is that Vince sent him out into the MMA world to get a few wins and come back and “legitimize” pro wrestling.
