Roger Huerta vs. Gray Maynard Rumored for UFN 19
Promoted from the FanPosts by Kid Nate.
Good news for those of you who only chuckled uncomfortably at this picture of Huerta. From Sherdog.com's blog:
Roger Huerta and Gray Maynard are being eyed for a lightweight bout at UFC Fight Night 19 on Sept. 16 at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City, Sherdog.com has learned from a source familiar with the plans. UFC Fight Night 19 will serves as a lead-in for season 10 of "The Ultimate Fighter" on Spike TV.
This will fulfill the final fight on Roger's contract, having refused to sign an extension offered to him earlier this year, after which he can pursue his intended career path: acting (which one assumes to include a dalliance with both Laura Prepon and Scientology).
I'll have to admit that I see this as a bittersweet parting: This is a good fight and fits well within the arc of both fighters' careers. Additionally, it isn't hard to see how this fight could be fairly enjoyable. However, Huerta is a bright young prospect, whose grit and heart were able to carry him through adversity both in and out of the cage and it will be unfortunate to see such a talent give it up to be one more fairly handsome nobody in Hollywood. That said, if a year from now Entertainment Weekly won't shut the hell up about his upcoming marriage to Megan Fox and Oscar nomination for his leading role in Terminator: Seriously, More F**king Explosions, I suppose I could see the wisdom in his decision.

Honestly, I love old school characters coming back even in today’s movies.
Example: I thought the new Rambo was fucking epic for the mere fact that it was over the god damn top horrendous destruction and blood and guts. Sometimes, you just need a .50 cal machine gun to let off some much needed macho steam.
Or Rocky Balboa… not the greatest plot line, but pretty funny. I always love the fact that his trainer says “You can’t run, you have bad knees, so speed is out…. etc, etc… so we’re just gonna make you a steaming pile of muscle and make it hurt when you hit him” It actually made it realistic as opposed to making an old ass Sylvester Stallone look like the old Rocky.

I get wistful for movies like “Predator” – unapologetic action movies. Dont’ get attached to any character, don’t worry about plot and character development, don’t even bother with some over the top explanation about how the hero’s mission is meaningful, redeeming, and/or will save the world. Take some people, put them in a highly hostile situation, let them battle. It’s perfect.
I actually thought that the much-maligned “Deathrace” did an okay job of that; certainly better than most modern action flicks. But it also had a cheesy non-interesting love interest, a bunch of hokey secondary characters who got too much screen time, and some distractingly unlikely shit. All in all, though, it was okay.

I am serious.
We watched 2 & 3/4 rounds of Guida lay n praying the shit out of him & then Huerta caught with a knee on the way in for a TD & choked him out. Had Huerta not been able to finish him we would not even remember it as exciting. I guess in the grand scheme of things because of the finish & the fact that Guida could not hold him down for the complete 3 rounds, it was an exciting fight.

well it was exciting because it looked like several times Huerta was on the verge of being stopped/TKO and managed to survive, then the final round it seemed like Guida was going to finally have his way and Huerta caught him with a knee and sealed the deal.
How many fights have we seen with Guida actually being finished? Shit, even Sanchez couldn’t finish him off with a near decapitation head kick.

I think Maynard is overrated. His best win has come over Frankie Edgar in a decision. Actually, his last 4 have been decisions. Wheres the stopping power?
Maynard is larger.
Guida 5ft 7 with crazy cardio.
Maynard 5ft 8 with almost the same build but less agressive and not as good cardio.

Huerta will end up in Strikeforce shortly after
If he wants to pursue “acting” he could have done already. It’s been almost one year already. He could have made two movies and one special guest appearance on Lost.

So Huerta’s big plan is to leave the UFC to go make less money in Strikeforce and he’s using “I’m going to be a movie star” as a excuse?
by who me on Jun 25, 2009 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yes
He’s not making the kind of money he could potentially make if he’s champ of Strikeforce or Bellator. Bellator or Strikeforce could pay him much more. He’s not exactly making huge money in the UFC. Plus, he won’t be able beat the top guys in the UFC.
by cyph on Jun 25, 2009 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I find it funny that in Huerta’s absence, people have been completely bashing the UFC. Everyone claimed that they were going to make him sit it out, would stick him on the prelims against a can or make him fight lions with lazers on their heads. Now they have him fighting one of the top 5, arguably 3, lightweights in the UFC. Maybe this is the UFC’s way of having Huerta earn the contract he wants.

Yes it’s all opinion but I don’t understand why people have to force everything into being about the UFC all the time? I’m pretty sure you’re taking the comment too seriously. I think the sarcastic overtone used in the msg was just trying to have a dig at the initial comment and how ridiculous it sounds that if someone wants to do anything other than fighting we should all really enjoy seeing him get the shit beat out of him before he goes. I think UFC was used because that’s the organisation he is fighting for.
That’s the impression i get anyway, i could be totally wrong.

Actually I thought that you were taking the comment making fun of Huerta too seriously, the guy is leaving something he is really good at to run off and try to be a big Hollywood movie star based on getting a small non-speaking role in a crappy video game movie(and perhaps an actress girlfriend and a cult), that’s worth a bit of ribbing on the internet.

Fair enough, but if he wants to run off and try acting, i still think that is better than living with the regret of what could’ve been later in life. Chances are he will fail miserably but i just don’t think he should be vilified for wanting to give something a go other than fighting, which you are right about, he is very good at. I wish he wasn’t leaving though, because he is still up there in my favourite fighters list and i will definitely be cheering for him if he does face off against Maynard.

Huerta doesn’t care what we think either way so there is no need to defend his actions.
Of course on a site chock full of hardcore MMA fans who live and breath this stuff, walking away in your prime to screw around in Hollywood on a lark is obviously not going to go over very well. It’s just one of those things, they would say the same things if he was leaving any org for this reason. If it was a NFL player that was quitting in his prime to go make crappy movies then NFL fans would act the same way.

Well it’s directed by the same guy who brought us Halloween 4, Marked for Death and Anacondas 2 and the producer who was responsible for SuperBabies: Baby Geniuses 2 so I guess it has to be good :D

I won’t call Roger’s priorities f*cked but he’s not making much headway into acting:

Come on, even Keith Jardine’s doing better in acting than Huerta.

Maynard by....
TKO, Round 2. Huerta most likely ain’t training anymore with all those “movies” he is try to land, and Maynard looked like a beastttt in his last fight. It’s gonna be brutal.

I can’t believe anyone with a straight face can defend this guy?, he went from being a top contender in the LW division a couple of wins away from a title shot, money, fame etc. To being frozen out by the UFC and probably send out with an embarrasing loss after all this time off to do movies again how is that smart in anyway?.

![Brock Larson reflects on his upset loss to Mike Pierce in an interview with MMA Junkie:
"I don't think the judges made the wrong call. They had to award him the win because the only thing that went on in the whole fight was takedowns, and he got them. I clearly lost the fight. Hats off to Pierce, but he has some issues to work on himself."
In the locker room after the fight, UFC matchmaker Joe Silva told Larson's manager, Monte Cox, "Don't worry about Brock. He's a fighter. We don't know what we're going to do with this other [expletive]. I don't know if I can watch another 15 minutes of that [expletive].".
"That was good to hear coming off a loss," Larson said. "In a weird way, that loss helps me, and it would have helped Pierce if he tried to be aggressive. Win, lose or draw, at least he's competing. People won't want to watch that stuff.
"I've always taken pride in going after and trying to finish my fights, and I get the upper hand always going after it and being aggressive. Pierce didn't have that attitude. He just wanted to eke out the win and get the [win].
"The W is important, but at the same time it's the entertainment business. People pay to watch, and they don't want to watch two guys hug belly buttons. Clay Guida, he makes more money on friggin' 'Fight of the Night' bonuses than he does on his fight wins."
"People look at film and say, 'This guy beat Brock? That's all he had to do,'" Larson said. "I have to get the Band-Aids out, cover that owie and not have to worry about that being a problem."](http://cdn1.sbnation.com/fan_shot_images/84043/md97y25v01_small.jpg)
