USAT/SBN June 2009 MMA Consensus Rankings
The June USA TODAY/Sports Blog Nation MMA Consensus Rankings are now live. Be sure and pick up a hard copy of USA TODAY tomorrow to see them in print.
Based on the premise that all MMA rankings are subjective but that it’s still useful and informative to know who the online MMA community as a whole ranks as the best fighters in MMA, we collect and average the rankings of the top MMA websites to produce our consensus rankings. We compile the top MMA rankings from each of our sources and award 25 points for a first place ranking, 16 for a 10th place ranking, 1 for a 25th place ranking. A formula is used to "normalize" the data so all fighters are awarded points from those lists that do not include a full 25 fighters. This formula ensures that each ranking site awards the same number of total points regardless of how many fighters they choose to rank. Each fighter’s total is divided by the number of possible points to determine their standing in the Consensus Rankings.

They’re out (precisely here and here), but I believe the contract with USAT is only for the Big 5.

I love it how a guy like Antonio Rogerio Nogueira has one half decent challenger since the start of 2008, and he continues to move up the rankings.
Just another example (in a long line of them), how guys in the UFC are penalized for fighting tougher competition.
A few other comical rankings:
1) Josh Barnett at #2. He loses to Nogueira, takes a year off, doesn’t beat a Top 10 guy, and kept rising to #2. He should be below Nogueira & Mir at the very least.
2) Arlovski in the Top 10.
3) Tito Ortiz still ranked. Hasn’t fought for a year. Should be out of any ranking.
4) Hayato Sakurai at #11. Who has he beaten at Welterweight to get up that high?
5) Edgar above Maynard? No way.
Only ranking system that makes sense is: UFC Top 10. Outside UFC Top 10. Everything is just a train wreck.

The guys in the UFC aren’t penalized, I doubt very much that they are shedding any tears about not being ranked high enough online. Joe Silva, Lorenzo Fertitta, and Dana White know who their best fighters are and they will take care of them.
Due to Cheick Kongo's atrocious takedown defense....
Walla walla walla, I’m an idiot

Arlovski will continue to drop
it takes a little time with our system for the full impact of fights to be felt as not every source updates at the same time.
As far as Barnett, its more a function of the guys who had been above him — Cro Cop, Big Nog, Couture, Sylvia, Arlovski — all losing when he hasn’t. That and the gravitational pull of getting to fight the #1.
Sakurai benefits from having a long and storied career that causes people to overrank him at the slighest hint of a comeback.
Edgar is riding of his recent win over Sherk. Recent wins seem to carry more weight with rankers for whatever reason.

That is
what infuriates me. Barnett fights can, barely wins and moves up. UFC fighters run a gauntlet of great talent might go 3-1 but get no love. Right now I think a top UFC HW that is 5-2 or 6-3 is better than a fighter who is 10-1 against cans.
This wasn’t direct at you Nate, just more of a drum I have been beating.

We actually only included sites that had updated since Arlovski lost.

There's an error on the LHW
Vera and Soszynski are both ranked #19.
And Tito’s on there too.

that's called a tie
they got the same number of points from the sources we use to compile the rankings.
Tito is still being ranked by many sources.

So...
there’s no #20? and I was totally kidding about Tito.

when you have a tie
for a position, then you skip the one following. There are only 25 slots so if there are two #19s, there will be no #20.

I totally laughed out loud at “that’s called a tie.”

Diego Sanchez wins and drops to #12, while Gray Maynard hasn’t fought since March and moves up two spots…
Interesting…

June 1 was our cutoff for sources
So many of the rankings were done before Diego’s fight. He’ll bounce next month.

Diego also beat someone ranked behind him and Maynard’s stock went up when Edgar beat Sherk.

WAMMA
I would rather have clear bias in my rankings (like they do) than some of these website polls. Do we know for a FACT these people actually watch MMA?
I still want a BE poll. I know I mentioned this before. I don’t have the knowledge to rank 25 in each weight class but I know I could do a top 10. I would also like to see other peoples top 10s as well. A lot of BEs posters have incredible insight into fighters. I want to see where Subo and MMAsup meet and where they don’t. Not to pick on you two but you are some of the more visible posters.
Maybe set up a top 10 poll per weight class? I respect most of the people who visit BE and I want to know their top 10. I can ask questions and maybe understand why they think that way.

we can prolly do something along these lines.

We should get people to nominate themselves to be a contributor and then vote to see who becomes one. That’d be fun.
