Jamie Varner Still Injured, Benson Henderson Interim WEC Lightweight Fight Possible (UPDATE)

5eb8es_mediumPromoted from the Fan Posts by Kid Nate.

Jamie Varner posted a tweet on the status of his injury:

I just got out of the Docs and hand is still fractured. I'm really upset. I thought I was ready, my hand doesn't even hurt, but the doc pulled the rug out from my feet...

The WEC was planning to have a rematch between Donald Cerrone and Jamie Varner for the Lightweight Championship, but now it seems like the champion won't be able to recover in time.

Cagewriter talked to a WEC representative and now it seems like they are considering an interim title:

"We're still waiting on the medical reports, but it looks like Varner won't be fighting in the foreseeable future," Dave Sholler, a WEC representative, said. "We're moving forward with the lightweight division, and we haven't ruled out an interim belt."

This is very unfortunate news. Both fighters have genuine bad blood between them, and both have been clamoring for that rematch. It could've been a very easy fight to sell for the WEC, but now they are left waiting for Varner, or scourging to find a new contender for an interim belt.

UPDATE via fiveouncesofpain:

the WEC has engaged in preliminary talks to make a match between number one contender Donald Cerrone and up-and-coming prospect Benson Henderson with an interim 155 pound title at take.

UPDATE 2 - Donald Cerrone Confirms it on mmamania:

“I kind of figured that (Ben Henderson) is who they would put me in against. I was looking forward to maybe having a rematch with Rob McCullough. Benson is definitely a worth opponent. He is a friend of mine which is the one thing that sucks. I have grown up fighting alongside the guy. I have no problems whatsoever taking the fight; I just have to go in there with someone I like. There is nothing bad you can say about that guy, he is just a real good dude. I will be in there 100% ready to fight though. I just won’t have the hatred in my heart like I would with Jaime Varner. Benson is a solid wrestler so I see him trying to take me down right away. I don’t see him wanting to stand with me. But you never know, it would be cool if he did. My takedown defense sucks so I am going to really have to work on that. If he ends up in my guard I will be busy going for submissions at every turn. Maybe Varner will come back in 2010 to unify the belt. But they might have to break his arm off and get him a new one. Can I add that Jaime Varner is a fag?

could be..

wouldn’t be as marketable as the rematch though IMO..

i feel bad for varner.. He seemed like he really wanted to get that fight only to find out he’s still injured.

Ben Henderson is cool as shit.

He came and rolled with my jiu jitsu class (the class I attend; not my class) here in Maui. Probably about three weeks ago. He’s down to earth and he has really good jiu jitsu.

He always has a toothpick in his mouth…..even when he rolls…..

To add to this....

he subbed me pretty easily….

I was at WEC 38 in San Diego. That was the first time I saw Henderson fight. I became an instant fan. I don’t know whether he’s ready for a title shot, but I’m be really happy to see it happen.

Oh… and the crowd was definitely NOT behind Varner. My impression was that a vocal portion of the audience felt he wasn’t sincere about the extent of his injury from the knee. My immediate impression at the event was that he understood the implications of saying he couldn’t continue to fight and made a strategic decision, but I’m not sure any more. But I can’t tell you why I felt that way at the time.

Good call on Ben. It’s a step up but he’s been money with all these steps up so far.

That’s fine, maybe they should have Cerrone/Razor Rob 2 for the interim LW title it would be a great fight plus it would give them a match up between two name WEC fighters while Varner heals up.

That's what I was going to say

Man, Cerrone fucked Varner up. He sure as shit would’ve won that fight with the Japanese scoring everyone seems to love nowadays. Cerrone has won a fight since then and Varner’s still on the lam for months? Who ya got?

Nowadays? You haven’t been around, it has always been loved.

I disagree completely. Varner was winning that fight clearly. Cerrone proved his chin of granite that night because Varner threw everything at him and landed a lot. Cerrone fucked Varner up by being so hard to finish. He broke his hand because he punched Cerrone in the face with about 100 power shots.

Watch that fight again on mute and then ask yourself who won

I've seen that fight 100 times

I give Cerrone the second and the fifth, and if you value aggression, then he can win the third or fourth.

Either Ricardo Lamas or Ben Henderson vs. Cerrone would make sense.

Losing Faber and Jamie Varner vs Cerrone for the rest of the year are huge losses for the WEC. I don’t like interim belts, but I don’t think the WEC has any choices.

Sucks for Varner, but I guess it saves Cerrone from another asskicking. Maybe he can play with the interim belt until Varner comes back.

Cerrone just fought and won while Varner is still out with injuires in what possible way did he get an asskicking?.

by Raker on Jun 24, 2009 6:56 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

He didn’t.

Stoked.....

Ben can hold his own standing but I smell submission if he can get it to the ground.
