Buckle your seatbelts fight fans, the next 70 days will see some of the biggest heavyweight fights in MMA history. If everything goes according to plan, there will be clarity in the division for the first time since the collapse of PRIDE.
First up at UFC 100, #3 Frank Mir and #5 Brock Lesnar will unify the UFC's heavyweight titles. If Lesnar can beat his nemesis in a rematch it will be the fastest rise by a heavyweight MMA fighter since Mark Coleman emerged at UFC 10.
On August 1, #1 Fedor Emelianenko will face #2 Josh Barnett at Affliction: Trilogy. If Barnett shocks the world he could very well find himself welcomed back in the UFC. If he loses he could be the next victim of the Fedor Curse, a dreaded affliction (sorry!) that has seen those vanquished by Fedor go on to lose their following fight(s) and rapidly slide down the rankings.
If Fedor wins, the big question will be: What Next for Fedor? All signs point to Trilogy being the final Affliction event. Will Fedor return to Japan for his traditional New Year's Eve Feast of the Can or will he finally bear down and cut a deal with the UFC?
At the end of August , MMA legends #4 Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and #6 Randy Couture will finally meet at UFC 102. Something of a senior circuit fight, this is the loser's bracket of the UFC's four man heavyweight mini-tournament. If Nogueira wins in convincing fashion, and Lesnar beats Mir, we could see "Big Nog" get one more run at UFC gold. Ditto for Couture/Mir, but I'll be surprised if Randy is given a rematch against Lesnar should he beat Nogueira.
Eagerly awaiting the outcome of those fights is #7 Shane Carwin. The right combination of winners at UFC 100 & 102 could propel him into an immediate title shot -- Lesnar/Couture or Mir/Nogueira. The wrong combination of winners and Carwin might have to win another fight before he gets his shot.
#8 Brett Rogers is the biggest beneficiary of the Fedor curse this side of Ray Mercer. Rogers' demolition of #9 (former #4) Andrei Arlovski at Strikeforce's June 6th event propelled Rogers up 18 spots in the rankings this month. One of the biggest single month leaps I can recall. No word on what's next for Rogers, but one can hope that the Strikeforce title fight he had booked against #10 Alistair Overeem until Overeem broke his hand in a bar brawl will be rebooked ASAP.
It will be interesting to see if Strikeforce signs Arlovski now that Affliction has opted not to renew their deal with the Belorussian. Surely his price tag is greatly reduced. Unfortunately, there is zero market demand for a rematch of Arlovski and Strikeforce's other big heavyweight acquisition, #14 Fabricio Werdum. I'll expect Arlovski to go to Japan before he signs with Strikeforce or returns to the UFC.
#11 Cain Velasquez had a nice jump of his own after dominating #16 Cheick Kongo at UFC 99. Velasquez easily won the decision, but in the aftermath of a performance that saw him repeatedly dropped by punches, some are calling for the UFC to put the brakes on rushing the AKA fighter to a title shot.

I have a serious question.
Fedors last two opponents have looked absolutely horrid since their fights. For me this call into question both Timmy and AA rankings. Now we have Barnett that would get stomped in the UFC. I think if Fedor just wants paydays he should stay put. But if he actually wants to be the greatest ever, he needs to jump ship and fight in the UFC.
I think Fedor is the #1 HW right now. I have Torres ahead of him on my own pound for pound list. But if the winner of Brock/Mir goes on to win his next 4-5 fights I will have them ranked above Fedor.
Having to fight Mir/Brock/Nog/Couture/Carwin/Cain carries a lot more weight than Barnett/Arlovski/Rogers/Overeem/Werdum/Sylvia.
For me 4-5 wins at the top of any UFC division makes you #1. 4-5 wins in Affliction or Strikeforce just isn’t remotely the same.
I think if Fedor just wants paydays he should stay put.
The UFC offered to make him the highest paid fighter ever, it’s silly to think he would be taking a paycut signing with Zuffa, especially if you take into account how much more he would get from sponsors.

Maybe add the word “easy” in front of “paydays.”

Is there really much doubt to his being the greatest heavyweight ever right now?

If
Brock/Mir goes on a 5-6 fight win streak as champ, I would seriously consider him. 5-6 wins in the UFC (for me at least) as champ put you right up there. Dana doesn’t have a habit of feeding his champs cans. Once in a great while we will questions the match making but usually can make a case they are fighting top fighters.
Fedor over Giant Korean dude
Fedor over Timmeh
Fedor over AA
Mir over Hardonk
Mir over Lesnar
Mir over Nog
Which is more impressive?
Fedor over PRIME Nogueira
Fedor over PRIME Cro Cop
Fedor over PRIME Herring (when he was legitimately top 5)
Fedor over everyone he has ever fought
vs.
Mir who has a few impressive wins (Tim, Lesnar, an old Nog) but has ugly losses against Vera, Cruz and Freeman
It’s not really a debate in the “greatest heavyweight ever” context I mentioned above

LOL I am so confused. People say that the last couple of recent fights only count (why Barnett is at #2). If we are going by complete careers then if Mir/Brock can hold the belt for 5-6 fights, they will be the greatest ever.
So Lesnar at 8-1 would be the greatest ever compared to Fedor who is currently 30-1-1?
Due to Cheick Kongo's atrocious takedown defense....
Walla walla walla, I’m an idiot
And I might add
In reality Fedor should be 30-0-2

And in certain cases...
a guy who has CLEARLY become the dominant force in the division for YEARS…isn’t going to lose any ground

there's a difference between
the top 25 RIGHT NOW and the greatest ever.
Fedor has an entire decade of utter dominance over the best in his division. For most of this decade, PRIDE had far and away the best heavyweight division in the game.

But what about Sylvia and Arlovksi?

I think Fedor
answered those questions pretty definitively.
Same for Big Nog vs Sylvia.

Rogers from 26th to 8th?
Come on now people, let’s get a grip. So he knocked out Glass Joe, big whoop. This is a little ridiculous, there are at least half a dozen fighters ranked below him that would be favored against him in a fight. I would pick Arlovski in a rematch, Overeem, Velasquez, Monson, Kongo, Dos Santos, Bigfoot, Gonzaga and maybe even Nelson against him. Talk about overreacting.

Rogers beating 1 decent guy is enough results to move 18 spots? I think AA, Monson, and Gonzaga have a more impressive track records than Rogers.

I understand the reasoning behind it, that doesn’t change the fact that Brett Rogers is NOT the 8th best HW in the world.
Due to Cheick Kongo's atrocious takedown defense....
Walla walla walla, I’m an idiot
nope
but that’s not what the Consensus Rankings measure — we track who the MMA online community THINKS are the best 25 in the world.
I think its a hopeless task to actually try to determine who the best are — I mean outside of setting up fights.

I know, I know, but like you said, the whole point of them is to have a discussion and maybe we can talk some sense into these people who overvalue one performance against a guy who probably isn’t as good as we all thought.

Concentrate on the positives. Sure Brett Rogers has a unrealistic high rating but Tim Sylvia slid to 15th so it’s not all bad.
Yeah, but....
Is there anyone ranked below him that you think he could actually beat?
Due to Cheick Kongo's atrocious takedown defense....

Brett Rogers or Tim Sylvia? Brett Rogers is no Ray Mercer but I’ve got a feeling he could give giant sized Tim Sylvia a run for his money currently and I’m not sure I would favor Cro Cop in a fight with anyone on the list until he shows me more than he has in his last fights.
Honestly I think there are lots of guys that Rogers size and power would give problems too on this list but yea I agree the ranking at 8 is a bit much, he’s a top 20 guy but I don’t see him as a top 10.
The Barnett ranking is really unexplainable, that doesn’t mean that he’s overrated skillwise just that he hasn’t done anything at all in years that would justify a number two ranking. There was a reason Tim Sylvia and AA got to the rankings they had even if they have both fallen off hard since but Josh not only hasn’t fought anyone of real worth in recent history he took a whole year off. I guess after this fight he will either earn the top or tumble down the rankings like the others have.

Am I allowed
to rec a response? You’re damn skippy I can.
what's the deal with dos santos being ranked below werdum
werdum hasn’t even fought since then
I think Werdum got a bump
when he signed with Strikeforce. Also dos Santos hasn’t fought anyone of note before or since fighting Werdum. He won’t get much bump from beating Justin McCully either and if he loses.

as I was saying
If dos Santos loses to McCully he’ll drop fast.
Werdum has been a top 10 guy forever with a stacked resume. It’ll take more than one loss to drop him very far.

The Rogers fight just happened. Dos Santos got bumped past Werdum when he first beat him, but as we’ve gotten further away from it, he’s slid back down for some reason.

Unless your Josh Barnett. :D
I’ve got a feeling it’s a lot harder for a young up and coming fighter to go up than it is for a old lion with a big name to go down the list. Memories of past greatness give those guys a boost with rankers.
That’s for sure, see Hughes, Matt, Liddell, Chuck, Filipovic, Mirko, etc.

Clearly not for Barnett.

Its all the pull of Fedor. Rogers just beat someone who has been pulled all the way up the rankings by Fedor.
I dislike Matt Hughes.

Really guys...
it just takes making news to move dramatically. Get a title shot = jump up the rankings, get a big win = jump up the rankings, sign with a promotion = small jump in the rankings…etc
Sure a win SHOULD jump you up but usually it’s a bit too much of a jump and things even out over the next month or two. I think by the end of the summer he’ll be down at #10 (see here)
I will say that I’m shocked at Arlovski being ranked #9 still though. With a recent loss and Cain’s recent win I expected them to be flip flopped…very interesting stuff.

terrible rankings as usual, honestly it’s to the point where i’m surprised when someone gets them right more than when they get them wrong.

you do understand that we don't make these up and they're not our opinion right?

opinions are like assholes, everyone has one and they all stink.

How exactly would one get them right? It’s not a math test, there is no definitive answer. If you don’t agree with where someone is ranked then share who and why, don’t just come here to bitch.

There is a serious anti-UFC bias in some of the rankings.
But the “Well, if Barnett is facing #1, I guess we should make him #2” thinking makes me want to punch somebody.
