Arlovski_rogers_medium

Rogers Knocks Arlovski Out Of Affliction:

Fighters Only Magazine reports that Affliction will not be offering Andrei Arlovski a new contract at the moment:

Andrei Arlovski will not be offered a new contract by Affliction Entertainment following the expiry of his current deal, which ended with Arlovski's fight against Brett Rogers on the June 6th Strikeforce show. The former UFC champion, who lost to Rogers by KO after 11 seconds, had a three-fight deal with Affliction which took in clashes with Ben Rothwell, Fedor Emelianenko and most recently Rogers "His contract has expired and right now we have so many fighters under contract that we are just concentrating on working with them," said Affliction VP Tom Atencio. Asked if they would be talking to Arlovski about a new contract he said "No, we are not looking at that right now."

Will Arlovski stay with Strikeforce now?

Gomi to Fight In America and In Vale Tudo Japan:

Gomi stated in the Gonkaku magazine that he will participate in an American promotion real soon and also in the mysterious Vale Tudo Japan promotion, which has been hinted all year in Japan.

There’s a Takanori Gomi interview in the Gonkaku magazine and it says that his next stages are America and…Vale Tudo Japan.

He is currently in talks with Affliction and the UFC, although he has been in talks with the UFC for the past couple of years.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Now that the (Brett) Cooper fight was called off can we expect your next fight be in Japan or in the United States? Takanori Gomi: My next fight will be in the U.S. Now we have several offers from some promoters, including, of course, Affliction. We are considering all those offers right now. I am willing to have a fight in the U.S. as soon as possible. I want to show the U.S. fans my fighting spirit. Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Has the UFC ever been in contact with you about potentially joining its organization going forward? If so, how did those discussions go? Takanori Gomi (MMAmania.com): We do have their offer and we are in the middle of discussion.

In my opinion, he will fight in Affliction so that he can participate in teh Vale Tudo Japan shows, since the UFC would not allow him to compete outside of their promotion.

Assuerio Silva To Jumpstart MMA Career in Jungle Fight:

Assuero talks about recently signing with promotions that failed:

I hope soon ... I have some proposals for international events, but last year, took no luck. Had signed with events that failed, like the HCF, the EliteXC, but my business is running after it, of some international fights for me, but before that, must go through the recycling. First, I have to make these fights here in Brazil and in the media appear to realize this international contract, I am waiting.

Fighting in Brazil for the next three Jungle Fight shows:

I have a fight scheduled in the Jungle, I have another fight in Muay Thai in August, an event that Fairtex doing here in São Paulo, is also with the other events Carlão Barreto and so on. This will make three Wallid Jungle Fight here in São Paulo and, in those three events, I have guaranteed my participation, and other struggles that I have to dial in Fortaleza, Natal, and these events will be the window to get back to top the world of wrestling.

Satoshi Ishii To Take On Fujita For MMA Debut?

According to Fight Opinion:

As for Mr. Ishii, Sengoku recently held a fan poll to gauge interest on who Ishii’s debut opponent should be on August 2nd at Saitama Super Arena. If you guessed that Hidehiko Yoshida won the poll, you’re wrong. The winner? Kazuyuki Fujita, which would be a horrible first-match opponent for Ishii.

Arlovski didn't leave them with a choice

When his manager is busting there balls over guaranteed payment it doesn’t help that he goes out there and losses.

by bignerd on Jun 22, 2009 8:10 PM EDT reply actions

I would think there is a VERY GOOD CHANCE that Arlovski will be fighting in Strikeforce or in Japan real soon. It makes sense if he continues with Strikeforce though, since he is a Showtime fighter and can continue to pursue his boxing career if he wants. I am assuming Sylvia will be dropped as well, and they can have Timmy vs Arlovski 4 at Strikeforce, perhaps.

Thats my take on it, anyways.

Timmy vs Arlovski 4

Already a tough sell before last month. Only if it’s MMA first ever loser must retire match.

How do you have a fourth match when one guy is already 2-1? All an Arlovski (fluke) win would do is make Sylvia/AA V mandatory. Kill me now.

I don't see Strikeforce paying AA enough.

Arlovski is coming off of making 1.5 million, I don’t see him accepting a flat fee of 200-400k. That would be the max Strikeforce would pay.

The only reason that AA was on the Strikeforce card was that Affliction had to get his fight off the books. His contract expires at the end of this month. If he had not fought, they still would have had to pay him the full amount.

Strikeforce only paid a fraction of his fee, with Affliction eating the rest.

by Lynchman on Jun 22, 2009 10:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Andrei doesn’t have too much leverage right now. I can’t imagine anyone out there wanting to give him even $500k/fight right now.

by Mike Fagan on Jun 22, 2009 10:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly, AA isn’t exactly negotiating from a position of strength at this point. If he’s looking for a million dollars a fight he’s going to be sitting out longer than Tito Ortiz.

Shame it’s too late for him to get on TUF 10.

by who me on Jun 22, 2009 11:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Timmy’s contract situation is going to be an interesting one.

The UFC can extend your contract if you turn down a fight due to injury, and I can see Affliction using that logic to prevent/delay them in having to Pay Tim any guaranteed money, saying that his KO by Mercer is an injury preventing him from fighting at Trilogy.

If Sylvia has guaranteed money coming, it doesn’t really make sense to just pay him without fighting. Put him in the ring and take the shot that he’ll spectacularly KO someone or that he’’ll get KO’d and build someone up.

As for Arlovski, very, very soon he’s going to realize that the Affliction Contract was a once in a lifetime offer, and if they’re not playing ball, he’s going to have to change what he’s looking for.

by Phildo on Jun 23, 2009 3:04 AM EDT up reply actions

As I understand it, Tim’s contract is not directly with Affliction, but with Monte Cox’s Adrenaline MMA.

by Lynchman on Jun 23, 2009 8:38 AM EDT up reply actions

I thought he also had a contract with Affliction, this shit is too confusing.

by Phildo on Jun 23, 2009 10:42 AM EDT up reply actions

I thought he had a contract with both, we know Monte Cox isn’t paying him 800k to fight for Adrenaline.

by who me on Jun 23, 2009 11:59 AM EDT up reply actions

800K was for being the main event. There is no way he was getting paid 800K this time around.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Jun 23, 2009 2:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I doubt Adrenaline MMA was paying Tim even a quarter of that amount and why would they pay Tim to be on an Affliction show to start with? The point is that Tim has multiple contracts floating around.

by who me on Jun 23, 2009 4:49 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s a fact he has multiple contracts, like many Monte clients. I was just saying there was no way he was getting paid 800K again.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Jun 23, 2009 5:38 PM EDT up reply actions

I think we can safely conclude that there is no way he will be making 800k again ever from anyone. It’s quite possible he had a “I’m fighting Fedor, pay me way more money” clause like AA and Barnett seem to have, of course even in that Tim seems to of got the short end of the stick compared to the other two.

by who me on Jun 23, 2009 5:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I am sure there is some PPV main event cash money tied to main eventing.

by Derek Suboticki on Jun 22, 2009 8:51 PM EDT reply actions

Fujita is not the great fighter he once was, so, its really Ivanov, which is happening in the Korean promotion, not Sengoku. Sengoku is actually does a pretty good job developing talent.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Jun 22, 2009 9:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm curious on affliction not signing him..

Could it be that AA is in talks to return to the UFC with a reduced salary?
Or
Does tom atencio feel that AA isn’t worth it anymore? And could him not even wanting to talk to AA about a cheaper contract be a result of the company having troubles to stay afloat?

I hope affliction does well cause they do give us good shows, but I really have the feeling that it is the latter.

by Anton Tabuena on Jun 22, 2009 9:14 PM EDT reply actions

Arlovski to the UFC after losing twice BAD is not the reason.
The reason is that Arlovski demands a big pay check, and Affliction has no need for him in the near future.

It makes more sense that he stays with Strikeforce and Showtime.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Jun 22, 2009 9:16 PM EDT up reply actions

How could he stay with SF if he was never with them? lol Still I do think he’ll end up there. When Rogers loses to Overeem AA could ask for a rematch. :)

Mike Goldberg: "You know Joe, growing up as a child Kimbo Slice was never given any bread with his meals. This is why he insists people... give him his bread."

by xFenixKnightx on Jun 22, 2009 9:19 PM EDT up reply actions

And risk burying his career even more?

I think the rematch will only happen after AA gets some wins and if rogers is the champ.

Putting him in an immediate rematch would be bad matchmaking, cause if both of them are coming off bad loses, one of them loses their value.

They can potentially get more hype and marketing after they get a string of wins before booking the rematch. Or if one of them holds the belt.

by Anton Tabuena on Jun 22, 2009 9:27 PM EDT up reply actions

But tom was asked if he was willing to negotiate with him

He didn’t even try to get a smaller contract for him.. Maybe affliction really is struggling.

by Anton Tabuena on Jun 22, 2009 9:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe he’s realizing that it’s stupid to sign people to guaranteed contracts when August 1 will probably be their last show.

Due to Cheick Kongo's atrocious takedown defense....
Walla walla walla, I’m an idiot

by ufc4 on Jun 22, 2009 9:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe. But Afflictions HW fights have basically all been structured around Fedor and the belt. Arlovski is well and truly out of that picture now and if they are looking for Monson or Overeem to come in and fight Fedor, a loss against Arlovski discredits the challenger and puts them in a difficult spot. I dont know who else they would match AA up against and he is too expensive I would imagine to be thrown up in non-title chasing fights against Kiril, Buentello or other mid tier guys.

It’ll be interesting to see what they do after the Fedor v Barnett fight. If Barnett loses, does he share the same fate as AA? If Fedor loses, who does he rebound against? Buentello? Yvel?

So far Affliction have been able to promote their winners and basically turf out the losers, but when the losers are big name fighters, managing them presents some challenges when your cards rely on being stacked and are relatively infrequent.

by GeeDub on Jun 22, 2009 11:33 PM EDT up reply actions

It’ll be interesting to see what they do after the Fedor v Barnett fight.

heres the short term possibilities
1. go bankrupt = affliction dies
2. lose a lot of money = still continue
3. lose a few money = still continue
4. lose money = they fold
5. even = so they continue
6. they don’t earn = so they fold
7. make a small profit = they continue
8. make a HUGE profit = were just probably high or it’s the end of the world..

by Anton Tabuena on Jun 23, 2009 3:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Affliction gets its revenue from selling clothes, not promoting fights, so they will not die.
Affliction Entertainment will probably still be around, even if they stop promoting fights.

Incorrect. When you lose several million dollars in one year’s time and no longer are doing the one thing you went into business to do in the first place that’s not a recipe for a long term business plan.

Affliction apparial and Affliction entertainment are two separate things, the apparial company isn’t going anywhere but it does seem that Affliction entertainment is on it’s last legs. They can advertise t shirts a lot cheaper to a lot more eyes by just going back to sponsoring fighters and events as opposed to running their own MMA organization.

by who me on Jun 23, 2009 11:57 PM EDT up reply actions

You are assuming that all Affliction Entertainment can do is put on MMA shows, which we are not certain of. Plus, last legs? Not just yet.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Jun 24, 2009 12:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Well Affliction already sponsors boxers and boxing events, I guess there is always a need for someone to sponsor Ozzy tours and such too but honestly they don’t need a separate entertainment company for either of those they just need to do the same things they did before they made the separate MMA company, sponsor big name athletes and musicians and run their logo on events as a sponsor.

by who me on Jun 24, 2009 4:25 AM EDT up reply actions

I meant how they would specifically handle the loser of Fedor and Barnett. Who would they fight…..etc. But thats a pretty exhaustive list of options for Affliction. Option 3 is most likely imo.

The ‘You beat my brother’ angle makes it more interesting. He should murder him in MMA. Would rather see him fight in a big show against a legit MMa opponent though.
