Monte Cox Says Alvarez Won't Fight JZ At DREAM 11

Eddie_mediumRecently rumored bout between top Lightweights JZ Calvacante and Eddie Alvarez appears to be off. Monte Cox, Alvarez's manager, posted on this on the Underground:

Dream called about this fight... I told them no. Eddie fights for Bellator.

The meaning of this is up for speculation. Alveraz did just take 3 fights in 3 months, winning the Bellator LW tournament and the $100,000 prize. It is a very real possibility that he simply wants a vacation. However, the wording from Cox implies that Eddie is going to exclusively fight for Bellator, and that Bellator plans to have enough cards to keep him busy, and that they are also willing to match his previous purses.

A matter of concern for both Alveraz and Bellator is the quality of opponents to challenge for his title. With DREAM and the UFC both having contracts of nearly all top 20 LWs, there could be a real problem with contendership.

Edit: In an interview with MMAJunkie, Cox had this to say:

Also, Bellator owns the rights and probably won't allow their champ to fight elsewhere.

Why Cox would have a fighter under multiple contracts sign an exclusive one is anyone's guess, but it probably has something to do with the reason that he let Big Tim fight Ray Mercer two months before his Affliction bout.

C’mon! Give Monte some credit. Alvarez is taking on Thomas Hearns.

Hopefully they will be boxing in a cage :D

It’s odd that he is saying that since he has a contract with DREAM and Strikeforce.
I don’t buy it, and expect him to fight for DREAM and/or Strikeforce by the end of the year.

Bellator was looking to have their champs fight when the next tournaments are over and the winner of those tournaments will take on their champs towards the end of their next season.

Maybe there is a Champ clause that is now in affect, but it would be pretty stupid since Bellator doesn’t have any #1 contenders now, unless they want to give Masdival a win or two before challenging Eddie.

Bellator’s standard contract is exclusive, most people thought (me included) that Alvarez with his name managed to get himself a better one.

The problem is negotiating an exclusive contract when you already have contracts with other promotions. =)

Guess we will find out. This kinda stuff is the reason I am a proponent for exclusive contracts, that and allowing a schedule to be made.

But then how would they pro wrestle whilst being an MMA fighter, hmm???

If this is true

then it’s a big buzz kill.

Alvarez picked up some good cash at Bellator, but I doubt he’ll be able to fight quality opponents for any significant period of time. I’d much rather see him against JZ than Masvidal, or anyone else they could offer Eddie at this point in time.

I really thought Strikeforce picked up Eddie’s contract (maybe when they purchase Elite XC, i forget), and Coker already talked about Eddie fighting for them by the end of the year. The idea was for Strikforce to hold an east coast show and have Eddie on it. I just really hope they don’t screw up Eddie’s career.

My FanPost:

Although not UFC-bound anytime soon, Alvarez is actually currently contracted with three organizations, meaning fight fans will be able to see plenty more of the 24-year-old this year.

“We are still under contract with Strikeforce (in the U.S.), as well,” Alvarez said. "They are cool with letting me fight with Bellator. We are hoping I can come to Strikeforce by the end of the year and fight some big names.

“I (also) have one more fight on my contract with DREAM.”

Sounds like Monte Cox has got Eddie into quite the pickle here, it’s hard to fufull a contract when you sign a exclusive contract with another organization and it looks like Eddie has two separate contracts outside of Bellator that he can’t fufill. Wonder if he also has Eddie signed to Adrenaline MMA too?

by who me on Jun 22, 2009 5:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Not Adrenaline, but his other promotion.
He was supposed to appear there along with Reis and Tara, but Alvarez and Reis pulled out due to injury, I believe. Aoki messed up Alvarez ankle, if you guys don’t remember.

Bellator Exclusivity

I’m just stunned anyone would sign an exclusive deal with Bellator, of all organizations. Did Cox read the contract up until it said “ESPN” and miss the “deportes” that immediately followed?

Cox certainly isn’t providing evidence against the claims being made about him lately.

This is a huge mess, and probably* a sign that we can’t assume that all the second-tier orgs are some kind of united front against Zuffa. Though anyone who’s been paying attention probably knew that already—otherwise we would have gotten that Diaz-Sakurai fight a couple of years ago.

*Also possible that it’s a sign of Cox’ ineptitude (or, to put it more charitably, his failure to adapt to the new realities of the MMA world).

Sengoku→Strikeforce<→Affliction→DREAM = All Play Nice!

Bellator is the new kid with the ESPN TV deal, so they are trying to see how much they can do, although they stated they are not against lending their fighters or co-promoting. They have to already work with Strikeforce due to Reis, Alvarez, Herman, etc, since their contracts were picked up by Strikeforce.

The world against the UFC sounds great and all but when you get right down to it the goal isn’t to beat the UFC it’s to survive and grow their own markets, no org is going to go out on a limb for a competitior. They will work together only as long as it is in their own self interest.

Strikeforce has been talking exclusive contracts for a while now, not because they are evil but because when you are contractually obligated to a certain amount of shows a year you have to have your talent guaranteed to be there and to be in fighting shape. Coker does have a good relationship with FEG because he used to be a K1 promoter so it wouldn’t be surprising to see them exchange talent but the idea of guys able to roam around and fight where ever they want any time they want seems to be fading.

by who me on Jun 22, 2009 8:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Alvarez is doing fine...

The timeline of Eddie’s career is as follows:

1. Signed deal with Adrenaline MMA.
2. Signed deal with Pro Elite.
3. Signed deal with Dream.
4. Signed deal with Bellator

Each event knew that prior contracts were in place. In 2008, deals with Adrenaline MMA, Dream and Pro Elite were combined into one deal.

When Pro Elite went under, a deal with Bellator was made that accounted for Adrenaline MMA and Dream… However, it also allowed that Alvarez be exclusive if he won the title.

The Adrenaline MMA and Dream fights (1 each) will happen, but control is with Bellator for now.

Alvarez was taking 3 months off regardless of the result of the finale… he needs and deserves the break. So, Dream was never a possibility and they were told that.

What about Strikeforce picking up his contract and Alvarez saying that he looks forward to fighting for them at the end of the year? =)

Bellator = $175,000
