Around SBN: Dana White Announces Koscheck vs. Hendricks for UFC on FOX

Kim Winslow became the first woman ever to be in the Octagon during a UFC fight when she refereed the undercard bout between Nick Osipczak and Frank Lester at the Ultimate Fighter Finale.

All referees have to have a wealth of experience in MMA before drawing a UFC assignment, and Winslow is no different. She started refereeing small shows and has worked her way up into the bigger promotions, including World Extreme Cagefighting, before getting Saturday night's UFC assignment.

There's a great interview with Winslow

here, from a while back. She’s got tons of experience, and I definitely would like to see her get more UFC work.

thanks for the link. always been curious how the refs, who do the ufc shows, make it to that point.

Great

I was thinking there would be a bunch of dumb comments here on women referees but if she has the experience and know how I’d probably rather her in there than Mazagatti or Yves Lavine (spelling?).

Although I will say that I don’t think its a good Idea for her to referee the higher weight classes. Sometimes you need to be more physical when stopping a fight and if she is outsized than she shouldn’t be there. Its the same for a guy like Mazagatti, he shouldn’t ref the heavyweights, Herb Dean is the best referee not named John and I think he should be getting all of the high profile fights the same way Big John did back in the day.

Has anyone noticed if Mirgliotta is around, not sure if I noticed him lately?

Rather than requiring referees be able to wrestle with fighters, an easier solution would be to have consequences for fighters who don’t follow the referees orders.

Dan’s still around, he was at UFC 99.
