Clay Guida has the heart of a champion!
Last night Clay Guida proved why he is in the mix of the 155 pound division. He is one of those fighters that really wants to win, and it shows in every one of his fights.
Here is a decent quote about Clay. Good stuff about the Carpenter.
"The heart of a champion is not something that can be taught. It can simply be described as the uncanny motivation to never quit. Saturday’s Ultimate Finale had a few great battles, but none that was exciting as the main event between Diego Sanchez and Clay Guida. At the end of the fight Deigo had his hand raised, but Clay Guida provided the fans with another great performance. Guida is a solid fighter but his strongest asset isn’t anything learned in a gym. Clay Guida has the heart of a champion."
Guida is not a better fighter than Diego. Had he won last night, he certainly would have been a huge underdog versus Penn or Kenny. If Clay's skills ever equal his will and passion he would be the best 155 pounder in the world!

I love Clay Guida. I’d give him solid odds against any non-UFC LW on the planet.

Kawajiri, JZ, Hansen, and Gomi
would all dust him.

Clay Guida would leave pieces of Aoki in the mat.

To be honest, I don’t think sitting in Aoki’s guard for 15 minutes would work out well for anybody, much less Clay Guida…
I don’t really see how you’d come to that conclusion. But then again, I still don’t understand how you think Guida won the fight so apparently it’s a very fundamental difference of opinion.

That's why
I didn’t include Aoki. I don’t think it’s a good matchup for Shinya at all.
Aoki is one of those guys that is either feast or famine, and I think Guida has the wrestling, cardio, and sub defense to be able to take Aoki out.
I’d never rule out the magic guard pants, though.

While I’ll admit Aoki has been taken down on several occasions, I think it would be improbable that Guida would be able to take him down more than a couple times, much less likely that he’d keep him down for a whole fight. And even when he would get him down, he’d have to work uphill through rubber guard, which is impossible to strike through. He isn’t known for passing guard, which is really the only answer to Aoki. Even if he did counter the RG and go into half-guard, I don’t think he’d be able to resist the sweeps while maintaining any sort of significant offense. Plus, he’s not that great on the feet either.
Good points.
To be honest, I’m not too sure who would win that fight, because it is a very intriguing matchup.

Couldn’t Guida just keep it standing? Not saying Guida would go with a sprawl and brawl game plan necessarily, but I think even his decidedly not-elite standup would brutalize Aoki.
I really don’t understand how Gomi beats Guida, unless Gomi tags him before it gets to the ground. Even then, it would have to be a really, really good shot.

The thing about Aoki
is that even though he has a pretty big deficiency in the standup area, he’s a quick, crafty guy, and he seems to have a knack for circumnavigating the striking game altogether. He’ll more than willingly smother Guida if he refuses to go to the ground (like he did against JZ in their 2’nd fight), and from there he can work his ground game.
As for Gomi, I’m not too sure, because he’s only had 1 recent fight where he’s looked good, and I wouldn’t necessarily call Nakakura an elite fighter (very good, but not elite; a b- level fighter at this point in time). But a motivated, in shape Gomi easily stuffs Clay’s takedowns and outstrikes him- even more soundly than Diego did, IMO. Gomi is never more dangerous than when his opponent is an outgunned grappler, desperately diving for takedowns (see Gomi/ Ishida for reference).

I pray all these guys come to the UFC some day
So that I can buy a house with all the money I make betting against them.

There isn’t a fighter you named that I would bet against Penn, Florian, Edgar, Maynard, Sherk (yes, Sherk) or Griffin – and I’d give Guida a fighting chance against any of them.
by Derek Suboticki on Jun 21, 2009 10:18 PM EDT up reply actions
I think BJ would probably beat any of them
(A focused, in shape- BJ, that is).
But I think Kenny would probably lose to JZ and Hansen; I think Edgar would lose to pretty much all 4; Maynard hasn’t really fought top competition, so I’m not too sure about him- even though I am a little biased towards him, I tend to think he’d handle most of them with the exception of Kawajiri (and maybe Gomi @ 100%); I also think that Griffin would get blasted by any of them; Sherk COULD beat all 4 if he were a smart strategist, but I tend to think that he’d get swarmed on the feet by any of the aforementioned fighters.
And Guida just wouldn’t be all that competitive against any of them.

"I love Clay Guida"
No wonder you were so upset last night, subo. I was this close to calling the waaaaambulance for you last night. But I went to bed. Guida will no doubt get a title around his waist. It just wont be in the UFC though.

Clay did win last night and depending on how Kenny or BJ look I would have no problem going with him to win a match against them.
Did you watch the fight?
Because IMO, laying on top of someone and getting murked with elbows isn’t enough to win a fight.
Top position is severely overrated in North American MMA.

WTF is up..
with all these compliments of clay guida. It still don’t change the fact that he lost. i dont think getting fight of the night everytime you fight earns you a title shot, respect but not a title shot. And the main goal of any fighter is to win a title so i dont see why more post aren’t written on the winner Diego Sanchez who has just as big a heart as any fighter in the world.

He and BJ Penn..
Would benifit Greatly from training with each other. Put Guidas cardio with Bj and Bj’s stand up and bjj with Guida
by SouthAlaBamaRampage on Jun 21, 2009 7:29 PM EDT up reply actions
In a perfect world
that would work, but I tend to think that BJ has worked on his cardio, and that Guida has worked on his Jits/ Striking.
If BJ were to train in a place where he wasn’t surrounded by yes- men that don’t push him, then he’d have good cardio.

He is fun to watch, but you are right. He needs tools!
Guida and Penn working out together? That would mean Penn would do more of a cardio workout than his surfing routine.

Guida is a warrior with a chin of granite but nothing more, he hasn’t evolved. Sorry to sound like Diego (Yus!) but he got his ass wooped last night and tried to play it off by hopping like a bunny in his post fight interview. Right when I heard Guida refused to chop his fro off I could tell he was content with being a gate keeper. “Thats my trademark” Dude, great fighters dont need gimmicks.
GSP, Fedor, Silva, BJ, Couture, Machida, Overeem, Torres, Diaz, Alves, Brown, Faber, the list goes on. Great fighters evolve and are well rounded, they dont need gimmicks. I used to love me some Clay Guida fights but his last few outings after he lost to Huerta have been textbook laynpray.
Mike Goldberg: "You know Joe, growing up as a child Kimbo Slice was never given any bread with his meals. This is why he insists people... give him his bread."
The list doesn’t go on much further – you pretty much named the top few at every weight. You can’t do an organization on 20 fighters, and not everyone can be a potential champion (which I still think Guida is – you can’t teach that kind of motor, you can teach everything else). I think you hate wrestlers with an undying passion, which has to suck considering that they’ve pretty much dominated MMA for the last decade.

He was more than good enough to handle the highly favored Sanchez last night, I love this idea that Clay isn’t as good as other fighters when he routinely makes these highly hyped up LW"s look bad.
Look Bad?
I don’t seem to remember Huerta or Sanchez coming out of their Guida fights looking bad. They won.
With Guida, his GnP is probably the least feared in the UFC (Out of anyone who actively adopts this as their go-to strategy) People are probably more afraid of choking to death on his hair.
Anyone with half decent GnP should be able to at least leave a mark on someone’s face they were on top of for 9 minutes. Diego was not even bruised in the post fight interview.
His hair really makes it look like he is doing more damage than he does. It is akin to the stomp on the ground when a pro wrestler throws a ‘punch’.

He definitely has the heart of a champion
He got knocked down by the head kick but there wasn’t even a split second where he was motionless. He bounced straight back up.
Guida seems like a really good guy. As a fighter I don’t like his style, which has me baffled, as he is now in 2 of my top 10 fights, with the Huerta fight being the other.
