Bisping, Henderson to Fight For Title Shot

According to an article in the Manchester Evening News, it appears that TUF 9 coaches Dan Henderson and Michael Bisping will fight for a title shot when they meet at UFC 100 in July:

The 30-year-old from Clitheroe has been promised a shot at the mixed martial arts organisation's middleweight crown if he comes through his clash with Dan Henderson in Las Vegas on July 11 and wins again at the M.E.N. Arena.

"Michael will fight Henderson at UFC 100 in Vegas, and the winner will get a world title shot," a UFC spokesman said.

"And if that winner is Michael, we intend to take the fight to Manchester, just down the road from where he lives.

The big winner in all of this has to be Bisping, who has only fought three fights at middleweight. To be awarded a title shot should he beat Henderson has to be considered a huge win for Bisping considering the people he's fought at middleweight (Chris Leben, Jason Day, and Charles McCarthy) to get to this point. In regards to Henderson, he's made it clear that he would rather fight at light heavyweight and he's also already lost to Silva once before in convincing fashion. Should Henderson win I don't see any real upside for the UFC or Henderson at all.

The two biggest losers in all of this? Demian Maia, of course, and Yushin Okami. When will these guys get their due? I understand that Okami has had a big layoff plagued by injuries so he probably needs at least one more win to get back int the picture. But Maia is the most deserving of anyone in the middleweight division right now with convincing wins over better competition than Bisping.

Obviously the UFC does what it wants to do for ratings' sake and I'm sure they'd love for Bisping to take on Anderson Silva in England, but when do the guys who have earned it get their shot?

Henderson beats Bisping at UFC 100.

p.s: I can’t wait for Demain Maia vs. Nate Marquardt at UFC 102.
p.p.s: I <3 Okami.

I don’t really agree with Bisping/Henderson being prioritized over Maia/Marquardt. Henderson hasn’t really beat very many people at 185 in the UFC since his loss whereas Marquardt and Maia have busted out several high-performance wins. And it’s obvious that Henderson is going to win a decision because what else can he do these days. Maia would make Henderson look like a joke just like he did to Chael Sonnen, and I don’t even expect him to get past Marquardt.

I guess the UFC is just pulling for Bisping so that they can do an Silva/Bisping event. Personally, I’d rather not see Bisping fall like Rashad Evans did against Machida.

Maia is the most deserving of anyone in the middleweight division right now with convincing wins over better competition than Bisping.

Maia has beaten: Chael Sonnen, Nate Quarry, Jason McDonald, Ed Herman.
Hardly A-Listers.

Bisping has beaten: Chris Leben, Jason Day, Charles McCarthy, and took Rashad Evans to a split decision.
He will also have beaten Dan Henderson if he gets the title shot.

To say that Maia has beaten “much better competition” is kind of re-writing history. The only real top guy either has faced was Rashad Evans, and Bisping lost via SD.

When will these guys get their due?

lolirony.

We're talking about the middleweight division...

In the middleweight division, Bisping has the much better wins. Sonnen, Herman, Quarry, and McDonald are much better victories than Leben, Day, and McCarthy.

Typo

Should say Maia has the much better wins.

- Rashad Evans sucks. I said it before the Machida fight, I said it before the Chuck fight, I said it before the Bisping fight. He can wrestle but he’s an amateur at everything else. To say that Bisping gets credit as a Middleweight because he “took Rashad to a split decision” isn’t really a good thing.

- Chris Leben, Charles McCarthy and Jason Day probably couldn’t beat anyone that Maia fought (in the UFC). Maybe Ed Herman. While all of these fights were going on, Bisping was being criticized by many for being fed cans. I have yet to hear of anybody who think Bisping has been given a ton of tough competition.

To say that Maia has beaten "much better competition" is kind of re-writing history. The only real top guy either has faced was Rashad Evans, and Bisping lost via SD.

I can agree with the latter statement. But Rashad isn’t even that good so I don’t think Bisping losing a split decision to him at LHW gives him precedence over Maia…

Right

The (previously) undefeated guy who KO Chuck Liddel and Forest Griffin, he sucks. Gotcha. Keep telling yourself that.

We rarely agree, but this is one of those times. I think Leben would have a decent shot against the recently departed JMac, as well.

Wow, fighter bash much?

I can’t stand Rashad for many reasons…..and I was screaming with joy when he got KTFO……

I still give him props for his accomplishments though, not many people would agree with you that he’s a nobody.

Ugh

the idea of Silva/Hendo II is very far from appealing

Hey now, Hendo was the last guy to really piss Anderson off and bring out his best.

With any luck, Bisping will talk twice the amount of shit he normally does and that will light a fire under Anderson…

Hendo

Henderson beats Bisping. Too bad Bisping doesn’t fight nearly as good as he talks trash. He’d be the champ by now. Henderson actually won the first round against Silva before getting caught in the second. in their first fight. Should be a decent re-match (in my opinion.
