Vitor Belfort vs. Jorge Santiago at Affliction III
Promoted to the front page from the FanPosts by Luke Thomas.
First Gegard Mousasi got a new opponent for Affliction III in Renato Sobral; now the man he was originally scheduled to face, Vitor Belfort, has a new matchup as well: he'll take on fellow UFC veteran and highly-ranked middleweight Jorge Santiago in a 185-lb contest at the August 1st event, according to MMA Weekly:
Middleweight Vitor Belfort will take on Jorge Santiago at Affliction 3: "Trilogy" on Aug. 1 in Anaheim, Calif.
MMAWeekly.com confirmed the match-up through sources close to the fight. It is expected to be on the event's main card.
After a disputed with Mousasi about weight-classes for their rumored fight, Belfort was adamant that he wanted to remain at 185 lbs, leaving Mousasi to pursue other avenues. Now Belfort will face an equally tough challenge in his fellow countryman who's on a red-hot nine-fight winning streak.
Santiago (21-7) is a BJJ black-belt at American Top Team who was released from his UFC contract in 2006 following back-to-back knockout losses at the hands of Chris Leben and Alan Belcher. Since that time, Santiago has righted the ship in a big way, going 9-0 with all wins coming via stoppage and with a wide variety of winning methods as well (including heel hook, arm-triangle, armbar, and RNC submissions, and flying knee and body shot KOs). Among those wins, Santiago won a single-night tournament on a Strikeforce card, submitted veteran Jeremy Horn, stopped UFC legend Andrei Semenov with strikes, and most recently, submitted top-ranked Kazuo Misaki in the fifth round of bout that determined Sengoku's middleweight grand-prix champion.
Although he has shown a questionable chin in the past, which could be a huge vulnerability against the heavy-handed Belfort, Santiago is just as dangerous on the ground as he is on the feet, and his well-rounded arsenal might prove to be a difficult challenge for Vitor.
The current rumored Affliction III: Trilogy card includes:
MAIN EVENT: Fedor Emelianenko vs. Josh Barnett
Tim Sylvia vs. Paul Buentello
Gegard Mousasi vs. Renato Sobral
Vitor Belfort vs. Jorge Santiago
Jay Hieron vs. Paul Daley
Chris Horodecki vs. Dan Lauzon
Ben Rothwell vs. TBA
Mark Hominick vs. TBA

Belfort v. Santiago
Now, that’s a fight.
It’d be cool if it had been booked for a legitimate MMA organization, though.
...Behold, a pale horse. The man that sat upon it was Wieters, and hell followed with him.

I don’t see how them fighting for Affliction makes it any less of a fight. It would be nice to have this be made public because for sure it will be interesting one way or another. The UFC has plenty of stars to promote.

This is the last affliction show. Its like a dead end fight. They are not fighting for a belt or towards a belt. Although it is a great fight.

So, this fight will not impact their rankings because it is taking place (in what you assumre) is Affliction’s last show, although they just mentioned that it won’t be their last show? Not only that, Santiago is the current Sengoku MW Champ. He doesn’t need a WAMMA or UFC belt.
by MMASuPreMaCy on Jun 2, 2009 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I didn’t say it wouldn’t impact the rankings. Just that they are not progressing toward anything meaningful. Its still a great fight worth having and seeing. You are very defensive.
by szucconi on Jun 2, 2009 2:32 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Any winning fight is meaningful. You claim it’s Affliction’s last show (which it is not, as you will discover in time) and they are not fighting towards a title therefore this fight is a dead end. I just fail to see how any fight that falls under “Fighter A vs. Fighter B for Promotion X under Unified Rules” are different from one another.

I am sorry I presented myself in such a way, but you have to understand this.
I am offended at the fact that this is a great fight and some are saying that it wont mean the same because it is not for a legitimate MMA org. Affliction puts on great fights and Santiago is the Sengoku MW champ. It doesn’t need to lead anywhere. It is a champion fighting another top fighter.

close your eyes and imagine this card as a UFC card and it will look just like any other random UFC event… actually closer to a UK event.
The only reason the card looks good is because its not put on under the UFC.
Lets compare the fights:
Fedor vs Barnett compared to:
GSP vs BJ2, GSP vs Alves, Machida vs Rashad, Brock vs Mir, Randy vs Nog, Anderson vs Henderson, etc…
Once the betting lines come out you’ll see the fights above are more competitive.
Sylvia vs Buantello (both ufc washouts) compared to:
forrest vs anderson, carwin vs gonzaga, cain vs kongo, damian maia vs nate, etc…
Mousasi vs Sobral (an up and comer fighting a UFC washout) compared to:
Henderson vs bisping, lyoto vs tito, Damian Maia vs Chael sonnen, wand vs rampage, etc…
vitor vs santiago (both ufc washouts) compared to:
dennis kang vs belcher, akiyama vs belcher, crocop vs alturk, etc…
The rest is not even worth my time as they are useless.
Its a good card, its an illusion to think is something unique.
What is a unique is an org outside of the UFC putting it on.
With that said I would like to sincerely wish that you enjoy their last show :)
by mmalogic on Jun 2, 2009 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Its a good card, but you are comparing it to major cards. I agree that the UFC puts on great show consistently, but there are a few shows that I would say disappointed me. 78, I went to it live and thought the card was weak. It was a PPV and I paid a lot to go to it live on the east coast. This affliction card is better then that UFC card. And it is a factor to do it all without the UFC brand behind it. It’s impressive. not smart business, but impressive.

The fact that the best fighter in the world is headlining the card instantly trumps whatever flotsam and jetsam the UFC ships across the pond twice a year. That’s to say nothing of the other top 10 fighters littered throughout the rest of the card.

Your post seems to implies that anyone that is cut by the UFC is not going to make as compelling a fight as a guy that is currently in the UFC.
It also implies that close betting lines also imply competitive and more compelling fights.
I sort of thought that Babalu was cut by the UFC by his extended choke out of Heath or some other guy? Any person could justify any statement by throwing out shaky logic. I missed the first show, but I enjoyed the poop out of their second, and it looks to me like they’re doing it again for their third.

Yeah, his Strikeforce is really like an Affliction fight.
Affliction will promote their 3rd event during the Showtime Strikeforce event.
Because of that, I don’t think he will fight on the 3rd card.
They still have Lil Nog, Arona, etc to use.
by MMASuPreMaCy on Jun 2, 2009 4:37 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
actually he is loan from affliction for the strikeforce fight against rogers. affliction still owes him one more fight. i can’t imagine them not wanting to utilize his star power. june 6th to aug. 1st is a long time. not to mention that he took the rogers fight on like 3 weeks notice. even if he does box on june 27th, there will be plenty of time. maybe overeem? strikeforce said this arlovski loan was part of a deal that “made sense for both parties”
by FiatJustitiaRuatCaelum on Jun 2, 2009 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, its a loan. But I was just talking about fiscal sense for the 3rd card, since he demands a high pay and Affliction is trying to keep that under control this time.
by MMASuPreMaCy on Jun 2, 2009 5:08 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
don’t they have to pay him that money even if he doesn’t fight?
by FiatJustitiaRuatCaelum on Jun 2, 2009 5:30 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Depends what his contract says. If they are co-promoting the fight, that may satisfy his clause that he has to fight within a certain amount of time, and they can still use him for another event after their 3rd.
by MMASuPreMaCy on Jun 2, 2009 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
In an interivew with Loretta Hunt Arlovski says that the Rogers fight will be his last fight for Affliction. Its actually quite funny. Hunt asks him if it will be his last affliction fight and he says (paraphrasing) “I have to be professional and respectfully decline the question…BUT……yes, it will be my last fight for Affliction.” hehe
Another notable quote from the interview, regarding Fedor: “I will begin my road to chase him again and Im gonna chase him everywhere til Im gonna have rematch because Im still sure that I can beat him.”
Anyways, re: his contract, I imagine Afflictions gonna pay him and let him fight for Strikeforce in return for some serious Affliction 3 adverstising during their broadcast.

Ya, the Anti-Zuffa tends to surface in the comments after the initial wave of Anti-Afflction, Anti-Strikeforce.

I guess it’s human instinct when I am attacked left and right. I could make a post about Fedor Loves to Take Walks Along The Beach, and I would get accused of being Anti-UFC.

people say this crap all the time, and I don’t see it Supremacy.
I guess promoting other shows=Zuffa hating.
I personally love the UFC and would say they are the top promotion by far right now. This doesnt mean i dont want SF or others to succeed, but there is a lot of great mma happening outside of Zuffa shows. That doesn’t mean those shows are better than the UFC, simply that, as a fan, I get to watch some great fights if I so choose.
I hate Affliction gear, but I will give them my money to see this very good card, just like I have the UFC for as long as I can remember. And I’m not wearing any stupid UFC hoodie either, lol!
If you're not submitting, you're just rolling around with another guy.

Exactly!
Thanks for that.
ALL MMA is good, and Affliction is definitely putting out great shows. I’m going to watch UFC 99 and Affliction, Strikeforce, DREAM, etc and have a blast doing it.

I did a survey of all his fanposts a while back in response to this, out of like 25 or so, one was a positive view for the UFC, and every other one that mentioned the UFC focused on negative aspects of it or possible problems they could have. Supremacy doesn’t hate the UFC, but he is very biased against it.

I posted things that are debatable, and worth discussing.
I never once bashed, said X>Zuffa, or Zuffa sucks. I think you guys are just a bit sensative. I typically post about things that others don’t, and guess what, most Zuffa topics are already covered by posters here like Scotty. Is Chris Nelson a Zuffa hater? No, he just posts more of the Japanese stories. If I ever find a Zuffa story that no one has posted, I will, although scotty23 is pretty darn fast poster.

Even though I think you spin things (and who doesn’t to be honest), you definitely do go out there and get any information on non Zuffa promotions. I think you do provide valuable information a lot of times, but I will call things as I see them.
