The rules are what make it a sport. Otherwise, it would just be “competitive fighting.”

It seems like the guy thinks if there is no “ball” involved, that it’s not a sport. I don’t see how you could say it’s not a sport.
Sport – an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.
