Early line: Machida (-600) vs. Rua (+400)

That's the word from BetUs.com, at least. I don't know if I've ever seen a line this crazy. I would think it would ultimately settle into something more like Machida (-400) vs. Rua (+200) so anybody who wants in on Rua may want to jump on this right away.

Star-divide

Also, some interesting lines for UFC 102:

301 Randy Couture
  -225
302 Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira   +175

307 Keith Jardine
  -225
308 Thiago Silva   +175

Wow, that’s wide for Machida/Rua.. (BTW, you’d never see a -400 / +200, too large of a gap)

Feels like Couture/Nogueira should be closer to even… Jardine/Silva is about right IMO.

I’ll be betting Nog at that line.

by Derek Suboticki on Jun 19, 2009 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I think randy takes the fight easy, so think the line there is about right..

But that’s just my opinion.. If you think nog will win, get your bets in cause it could get closer..

by Anton Tabuena on Jun 19, 2009 11:34 AM EDT reply actions

I agree.

And as somebody who is pretty confident that Mauricio is going to win this fight, I’d say the line is just fine where it is.

You stand to make a bundle of cash and ridiculous bragging rights at all the same time. If Rua wins. If.

Hamill uses his wrestling in reverse now..

He’s like a chuck Liddell minus the striking..

Hamill always always pushed forward and will strike with his opponent with über slow looping punches.. That style worked for even worse strikers than him (andy, munoz), but it didn’t against a superior striker, franklin.. I expect him to do the same and to get KOed by vera..

by Anton Tabuena on Jun 19, 2009 12:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Even if Hamill takes it to the ground, Vera is the better grappler. While I don’t expect him to submit Hamill I’m sure he would threaten with submissions off his back until Hamill chooses to stand.

Vera by UFC Undisputed head kick knockount after Hamill throws a sloppy head kick that misses.

Yeah, but subo seems to think that hamill wins

I’ve been trying to get him to take a sig bet with me, but he seems to be scared to put his, uhh, sig, where his mouth is. Haha.

by Anton Tabuena on Jun 19, 2009 12:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Hamill’s going to brutalize Vera. If you really want to bet Vera your sig will have to be ‘I, for one, welcome our American occupiers’ or something.

Haha, I’ve probably made it before. But really I think Hamill is an amazing athlete. His style just doesn’t match up well against Vera, in my estimation. He could definitely win though.

by Ahhhoki on Jun 20, 2009 12:05 PM EDT up reply actions

It is on!

Change your sig to “weoweoweo is the best… and I <3 Vera cause he is pogi..”

It’s nothing degrading or insulting, but it would give some laughs to those who understand. :)

Pogi=good looking/handsome

Fair enough? Loser sticks that sig on until the next two Numbered UFC events end, or if a new sig bet is made. Ok?

Well…

I’d wait if you plan on betting on Machida… for sure. I imagine a lot of fans will take that Rua bet, and Machida’s line will become a lot more favorable over the coming months.

At +400, I might take that Rua bet!

Waste of money bro

Even the old shogun, which I doubt we will ever see again, has a style that plays to the strengths of machida..

And sure, at 400 it could make you a lot of money because anything can happen in mma, but I think the odds of him winning isn’t good. You’d be better off betting on other fights, in my opinion..

by Anton Tabuena on Jun 19, 2009 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions

They said that about the Chuck Liddell fight, and Shogun made me a believer. I think Machida wins, but I think there’s a 1 in 5 chance Shogun shocks the world again. There’s still a lot we don’t know about Machida’s ground game.

by thetakeover on Jun 19, 2009 12:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Machida isn't old right?

People said that about chuck because if the old chuck showed up, stylistically he has the advantage..

Plus, what’s this about machida ground game were talking about? He’s a blackbelt under the nog’s. How can that be an issue.. It’s like how people said, machida has never dealt with a patient fighter like rashad… What’s next? Machida has never dealt with a (insert strength of next challenger).. Etc etc..

by Anton Tabuena on Jun 19, 2009 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Machida will lose on his feet, not on the ground. Although Shogun does have a superior ground game.

It’s like how people said, machida has never dealt with a patient fighter like rashad…

Wait, Rashad is patient? Looks to me like he just pump-fakes all of his punches until he finally has the balls to throw one. He’s a very erratic striker. Shogun, while his punches are usually looping, has shown good accuracy and he also has been known to throw straight punches, which Rashad does not do.

I think it will be a close one and I thought Machida was going to win every past fight he’s been in. I’m definitely a fan of his but I just don’t think he has the punches, clinch or ground skills to defeat Mauricio.

by Ahhhoki on Jun 19, 2009 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I fail to see how Machida loses on the feet. How? And don’t tell me some story about Shogun being a more technical striker. He isn’t, and there is loads of tape proving that point. All those PRIDE battles, it was more like a wildly aggressive Shogun who just overwhelmed guys. Technically, I think Machida is a better striker because of his stance and style. Ground wise, Shogun’s takedowns are great, but Machida’s quickness could easily counter that. Machida’s ground acumen in terms of defending takedowns hasn’t been truly tested that well, so you may have a point there.

Honestly, I think Machida crushes Shogun, but that’s my opinion I suppose.

Shogun knocking out Chuck >>>>>>>>>>>> Brock KOing Randy to some people – one was a guy catching a has-been with a punch, and the other was Shogun beating Chuck. Weird.

Machida will win this fight.

lol he’s still gotta win for you to get that money.

But yeah… tis a crazy line. I think Machida will win, but it would be unwise to sleep on Shogun like that.
