"Kimbo really liked the classes and wants to train in the gi when he gets back from shooting the show (TUF)."

Good to see Kimbo is taking MMA more serious now. The dude’s on the show trying to get a contract (though win or lose I’m sure we’ll still see him in the UFC) and now he’s training his jiu jitsu with a good camp.

I’m just envisioning Roger Gracie rolling through the academy one day while Kimbo is there.

Respect

buy why any MMA fighter would train with a gi is beyond me. Am I missing something?

I am not a fighter or a trainer, but from what I hear is it tightens up your ground game and takes no-gi to the next level.

The main benefit is it slows you down

You gotta think more, be more technical as it’s a much slower game due to the grips and friction.

My coach always said that everyone gets a lot better when they take the gi off – meaning, rolling with the gi is a much greater technical challenge. Rolling no gi, people often just rely on brute power and athleticism. If you can translate the technicality of the gi over to no gi, then you have a huge advantage over a fighter of similar strength/size. It’s generally regarded that, while great jiu jitsu with a gi is no guarantee of great MMA grappling, it really increases the probability of becoming a great no gi grappler.

Wow, I can’t wait to see Kimbo come out on TUF in his gi with the porno company logo on back.
