UFC 99 The Comeback: Cain Velasquez's Performance

Is everyone forgetting that Brock almost did the EXACT same thing against Herring (dominated 3 rounds with superior wrestling and positioning) and he was praised to hight heaven for it? No one questioned his power or ability to finish a fight did they? Last night Cain showed me something. He showed me he will do whatever it takes to defeat his opponent and that he's NOT (as some of you here have been saying) "one of the new wrestlers who's in love with his striking". He showed tremendous heart and endurance. Kongo is one big mofo am I right? It's going to be hard for anyone to finish him.
In my honest opinion I think Cain needs one more fight before a shot at the title letting him have some time where he can keep on improving his standup and defense. But, if he got the shot next I think it would be ok. Too bad Mirko left because I really think that would have been a great fight though in the end Cain would have beaten him as well.
Side Note: Rogans commentary on the Cain fight yesterday was horrid. It's like he was pulling for Kongo the whole time. Very annoying. This is why I say Florian should take over for him.

Rogan's commentary was fine
He was right that Cain was exposed on some very important points—he took two flash knockouts (and Rogan gave him credit for his chin) and ultimately “rode” his way to victory throwing weak pitty-pat punches. And yes, Carwin would have finished that if he were in the save position. I think you’re right Cain needs one more fight, cause even he knows that it was not the impressive victory that would put him into instant title contention.

I dont know if he was exposed really. He took some wicked shots (he gave some as well) but to say they were flash KOs? Really? Borderline I guess but yeah I rewatched it and its like Rogan was in Kongos corner the whole time. I agree Carwin probably would have finished but thats exactly what Im talking about. Rogan is in there criticizing Cain and bringing Carwin up during the fight? Basically, hating on Velasquez. I dunno man but IMO that was lame as hell. Hopefully they do make that match up and see what happens with Carwin/Kongo.

There are huge differences between the Brock fight with Herring and this. Although, they are similar, they are also very very different. Brock didn’t get his jaw jacked at the beginning of every round…he controlled the clinch action standing up and took little to no damage through the whole fight. Brock had also just lost his first fight in the UFC and had reason to make sure he won and take no chances, Cain has been destroying people. And who cares about the commentary…I was pulling for Kongo after round one and I hate him. I felt bad because if he had the capability to keep it on the feet, he would have finished Cain in the first round, easy.

I personally don't see how there are HUGE differences
But it may be my personal definition of ‘HUGE.’ One thing that I noticed with Cain is that he had a more active ground n pound game whereas Lesnar was honestly lying on Herring many times. The best example I can come up with is when both had mount: Cain was pounding while on mount and Lesnar really didn’t. I have to agree with the article because Cain is getting A LOT of flack for not finishing Kongo while Lesnar did not. In the end, it was more or less the same thing, and it is because Lesnar was dominant throughout his whole fight against Herring that I feel Lesnar should have gotten MORE flack for not finishing Herring.

Agreed
Lesnar was the one who really LnPd. Anyway Velasquez got the win the way all great fighters get them. He knew what Kongos weakness was and he executed perfectly. He wasnt too cocky as to think hey Im just gonna bang with this guy.

I agree that Cain looked great. He looked outclassed standing, but he’s fighting a guy who’s gotta be one of the top few strikers in the UFC HW division. Rogan and others want to degrade Cain’s performance because he couldn’t finish. Well, if you listened to his corner, they were clearly instructing him to maintain dominant position. In addition, the kid had something like 7 minutes of ring time in 5 fights. I’m not going to go as far as saying that Cain refrained from finishing Kongo to get some ring time, but it was pretty clear to me that finishing the fight wasn’t his camp’s number one priority.
Also, Cain needs a bunch more fights before he gets a title shot. I’d like to see him fight 5 or 6 more times, personally. Might not be plausible with the state of the division, though.

So important to remember that he was in the ring longer in the fight last night than in his previous MMA CAREER. Ability is one thing, but until you use it under fire it’s always suspect. Cain was and will continue to test his abilities in the ring, and he should be given the chance to do that until he is actually comfortable with his skills. Then, and only if he gets there, will Cain be ready for a title shot.

Don’t know what happened to the story I first posted because it was a lot longer than this. Oh well, too lazy to update it. :P

Cain showed tons of heart and a great instincts when he got ricked in the first round he rushed Kongo and got the take down. Kongo did not fight smart, each time he had Cain rocked he made the same mistake by letting Cain get ahold of him. If Kongo had sat back a bit and picked his shots insted of running in for the finish might have been a different fight. Pat Berry made the same mistake against Tim Hague (sp?).
