I really want him to box, because I think Mercer in 4 oz. gloves could be incredibly painful.

Thats what I call a crash and burn for Tim’s career. I don’t see him even fighting at affliction.

hopefully
after this mess, we’ll never be subjected to another Tim fight again. How much lower can he go, whats next, is Tim gonna fight high school students?
I don't see
why people feel bad for Timmah!, He asked for this to happen to him. Letting money cloud your judgment is always a bad idea.
It would be a crime to humanity if there was no footage of this…

Sylvia and Arlovski getting wasted like this just gave Fedor detractors a whole ton of new ammunition.
Keep firing Assholes!
Out out, you demons of stupidity!
True
Or maybe Fedor beat them so bad, they lost their fighting spirit. Fedor may not be a robot, but some evil warlock!
In all honesty, I totally agree with what you are saying!
I'm from Canada, and they think I'm slow eh!
Sometimes your prime is lost in just one fight and it is fair to say that maybe Fedor had that type of impact on certain fighters.
"Boxing is dirty," said Casamayor. " The day I’m not ready to be a dirty fighter is the day I don’t fight anymore because it will mean that I have no heart for it anymore."
How so?
AA got dropped because of poor defense (which is how Fedor beat him) and he had absolutely no problems with Tim.
rightly or wrongly
they will go right back to saying fedor hasn’t fought any top competition recently
Because I could say that a washed up 48 year old boxer just wasted Tim Sylvia 26 seconds faster than Fedor. I could also say that Arlovski sucks because he just got starched in 22 seconds by a relative unknown.
Keep firing Assholes!
Out out, you demons of stupidity!
A Fedor detractor would say that those guys weren’t that good to begin with, and he’s still up to his can-crushing habits.
Keep firing Assholes!

No, Fedor is the best HW on the planet. The situations that Timmy and Andrei currently find themselves in are not relevant to their capability when they faced Fedor.
Keep firing Assholes!
Out out, you demons of stupidity!
People don’t get that winning a fight quickly could take LESS SKILL than winning a fight after a longer period of time. I will not be one to blame Fedor for fighting smart fights and picking his shots.
by Kaleb Kelchner on Jun 14, 2009 1:09 AM EDT up reply actions
Well, to be fair Fedor does crush a lot of cans. Of course, the fact that every HW on Earth is a can compared to Fedor makes that inevitable.
One day someone will beat Fedor but even then he shouldn’t be discounted as the amazing fighter he is. That makes it all the more of a shame some of the silly fights he has wasted time on in the past.
Well, it’d be nice if guys he destroyed are also destroyers themselves rather than being the destroyed. Yeah, a mouthful, I know. Sounds like you threw a preemptive strike to defend Fedor. Don’t get me wrong, I think he’s good. However, beating Arlovski and Sylvia doesn’t lead credence to his not needing to fight UFC heavyweights. All I’m asking his that they sign the UFC contract and prove that he’s the best. Arlovski will never be top ten again. As for Timmay, we hardly knew ya.
I think it sheds more light on the dearth of heavyweights in the UFC (and the weakness of the division in the past) as those two men have three championship reigns between them and were both completely clowned in their last two fights, the second of which came against very questionable competition.

What kind of Brain Trust does Tim have guiding his career?
There was zero upside to this match…absolutely zero.
He made 800G fighting Fedor…he surely doesn’t need the money.
The juice certainly wasn’t worth the squeeze.
Just realized something....beating Ray Mercer.
Kimbo Slice was able to do something that Big Tim couldn’t.
I’d kill to see that edition of Fightlines.

It just comes to show that some boxing skills are good to have even if you are a MMA fighter. If you are able to land flush like I am sure that Mercer did, you can end the fight quickly and suddenly. I have not seen the youtube or a gif but that is why many boxing fans always mention the arm punching in MMA.

Well it is hard to be decent at wrestling and then fight world class fighters in MMA. The fact is that maybe Tim just isn’t a world class fighter anyone.

Oh no doubt Tim is quickly reaching the end of his MMA road…I don’t want to say that after 2 losses he should hang it up, but it dosen’t look good.
by Kaleb Kelchner on Jun 14, 2009 1:16 AM EDT up reply actions
The best part of this whole thing is, after training for a boxing match, Tim shows that he wanted to take advantage of this being an mma fight by throwing a kick…then eats a vicious right hand and crumples. I applaud you Ray Mercer.
Well think about it… Mercer all his life has used 10 ounce gloves and then you give him puny 4 ounce gloves… and lands a flush shot… It shouldn’t be shocking to expect a KO.
"Boxing is dirty," said Casamayor. " The day I’m not ready to be a dirty fighter is the day I don’t fight anymore because it will mean that I have no heart for it anymore."
Oh, it wasn’t suprising at all. I didn’t think it would be as fast as 10 seconds because Tim is decent with using his range, but, Mercer exploded at the right time. I would HATE to be hit by a boxer with 4 oz. gloves…that has to hurt…bad.

Depends if Affliction’s contracts allow them to not use a fighter. TIm better hurry up and sue before they go under.
"Japan is half-Machida" - iiowyn
I think he meant that Tim won’t be able to fight because he won’t get cleared by the commission due to this knockout happening to close to the fight. And even then, I don’t think Affliction would close the door on Tim like that.

Train Wreck
I’m not sure any single match has done soo much damage:
Destroyed Tim’s marketability.
Screwed up Affliction 3
Given Boxing fans ammunition to disparage the sport
Reflects badly on the UFC (Former UFC Champ getting KO’d by 50 year old Boxer)
Probably more, but I’m already depressed.
Destroyed Tim’s marketability.
His fault for going after the fight.
Screwed up Affliction 3
They can get Paul B. another opponent.
Given Boxing fans ammunition to disparage the sport
The boxing fans who disparage MMA never liked it in the first place.
It doesn’t really mean anything to MMA. It just says that a boxer who lands flush can KO anyone because they don’t throw arm punches.. Any rational person know this.
"Boxing is dirty," said Casamayor. " The day I’m not ready to be a dirty fighter is the day I don’t fight anymore because it will mean that I have no heart for it anymore."
Tim's fault
He should have never taken this fight…under any rules. He out-priced himself w/Affliction and got himself in this situation. I would fire Monte Cox if I were him.

Can we get some legit boxers in the UFC with those tiny gloves to bring some real elite level striking to the fold? Those guys would be scary with the hand speed and punching power they bring (and please don’t try and tell me about Marcus Davis’ boxing).
I used to think a guy like Tyson in his prime would get embarassed in an MMA fight, but now I think even with a little takedown defense he and most other heavyweight champions would crush any MMA fighter in the standup and have a great chance of winning the fight before the MMA fighter could take it to the ground.
"Japan is half-Machida" - iiowyn
MMA goes through eras, at some point we will have an elite boxer come in, and all the new breed will have to step up their game.

I love boxing but you just can’t all of a sudden tell give a boxer a few tips on how to wrestle and expect him to do well. Tonights outcome is a reflection on how Tim didn’t even train for the fight and didn’t respect the person he was facing.
"Boxing is dirty," said Casamayor. " The day I’m not ready to be a dirty fighter is the day I don’t fight anymore because it will mean that I have no heart for it anymore."
Yet it does show that MMA would be wise to pick up one some few tips when it comes to striking and how to leverage their punches and not always resort to arm punching.
"Boxing is dirty," said Casamayor. " The day I’m not ready to be a dirty fighter is the day I don’t fight anymore because it will mean that I have no heart for it anymore."
The first guy to do with boxing what Machida has done with karate will be a force to be reckoned with.
by Kaleb Kelchner on Jun 14, 2009 1:36 AM EDT up reply actions
It’s one thing to say that a great boxer in MMA would be good…but it’s not just that. You can’t go into an MMA fight and just box, MMA fighters throw arm punches because planting your feet and using your body weight to throw punches leaves you so open for takedowns. The first fighter that learns how to find the right balance between real boxing, and positional superiority, will become bigger than Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz.
by Kaleb Kelchner on Jun 14, 2009 2:06 AM EDT up reply actions
I know why there is so much arm punching but there are openings in every fight where if a fighter can punch with leavage and use their legs, don’t loop their punches, and basically do significant damage and end the fight because they all of a sudden have KO power when they land a punch flush.
"Boxing is dirty," said Casamayor. " The day I’m not ready to be a dirty fighter is the day I don’t fight anymore because it will mean that I have no heart for it anymore."
If a guy with world class boxing could be just adequate in the other facets of the MMA game I think that he would be devastating in the octagon. How sloppy are many striking exchanges in MMA, especially later in the fight when guys start to gas. There are so many holes in the exchanges in the pocket that the boxer would feast upon if given the chance.
"Japan is half-Machida" - iiowyn
Don’t say that! I like the ground game – I don’t want boxers KOing my BJJ players…

Oh yeah, I definately see what you mean there. Some fighters do manage to do that, but not often enough to really say they have good boxing. Like I said, the one who can do with boxing what Machida did with karate will be a monster.
by Kaleb Kelchner on Jun 14, 2009 2:19 AM EDT up reply actions
I know you are discounting Davis but he was a professional boxer. We’ve seen plenty of professional boxers in MMA but not all professional boxers are the same, hell Ray Mercer is a former world champion and a Olympic gold medalist. Lets also not forget that Mercer’s only other MMA contest was a submission loss to BJJ specialist Kimbo Slice. Mike Tyson would get schooled in MMA because any MMA figher that wasn’t a moron would take him down first thing and choke his ass out. A little takedown defense would be pretty worthless against guys who have trained takedowns for years and do it for a living same as a little boxing training for a MMA fighter would be pretty worthless going into a professional boxing fight.
It would also be a huge mistake reading anything into this situation, or any other MMA situation involving Tim Sylvia for that matter. I mean this is Tim Sylvia we are talking about here.
I’m discounting Davis because he wasn’t a world class professional boxer. What I’m saying is that I love MMA and I’d like to see these guys come here instead of boxing in the future.
As far as the Tyson thing goes MMA doesn’t work like that. It wouldn’t be Tyson’s takedown defense against MMA fighter’s takedowns. The MMA fighter would have to work for the takedown while avoiding far faster and more devastating striking than they have ever seen (and would almost surely not try to set up the takedown with any striking). I don’t think a takedown is a given.
And its easy to shit on Sylvia but for all his faults hes still a two time heavyweight champion in what should still be his athletic prime.
"Japan is half-Machida" - iiowyn
That’s a very long way of saying that Tyson would have a chance to land a shot or two while the MMA fighter was closing to take him down and clown him on the ground. Yes most fighter stand a puncher’s chance but a more rounded fighter is going to win most of the time over a one diminsional guy. Any MMA fighter worth a damn would plan for what Tyson can and can’t do and immediatly work to the vast majority of MMA he can’t do. So yes Tyson would have a chance at the start if he could land a clean shot but there is so much more to it than that.
It’s easy to shit on Sylvia because he brings it on himself, he just lost to a 48 year old who Kimbo Slice tooled in his last MMA fight. I just don’t think this performance by Mercer is enough to sell me on Boxers dominating the sport of MMA anytime soon. Yea it would be great to get more world class strikers but then MMA gets a lot of world class kickboxers all the time and we know what happens to them when they don’t have good ground games.
Destroyed Tim’s marketability.
His fault for going after the fight.

except mercer didn’t catch the kick of course
From Sherdog
Cut down by an overhand right from 1988 Olympic boxing gold medalist Ray Mercer, the former UFC heavyweight champion fell to his back in slow motion and ate two brutal right hands on the ground as a stunned sparse crowd looked on in amazement…It took [Sylva] several moments to rise to his feet, still groggy from the punishment he absorbed.
